Why would you believe this to be the case? In general, mammals, some birds, and some reptiles do care for their young, but it's a broad tendency, not an absolute mathematical rule. There is plenty of individual variation. For examples, humans are mammals, and if you read the papers you'll certainly be aware of mothers who have not only abandoned their children to predators, but who have killed their children themselves.
