The problem with the artificial example is... I had that exact conversation with someone when I was taking algebra - and I mean that literally. (Though the x we spoke of was lower case x.) Just for the record, I'm an aspie, and I'm pretty sure the person I had that conversation with was, too - and we weren't actually serious. But we were both serious about having had basically that conversation with other people with various things substituted for x. — Ed Grimm 6 secs ago

@Erik I understood that distinction as a small child, and many around me did, too... though I think a number of them resented me for it. — Ed Grimm 1 min ago

Been there, done that, and I've still been accused of having an ulterior motive. "You're just having a mint so that you can excuse asking me if I want one!" There were a number of us who decided after a while that he was just looking for reasons to be unfriendly, as there didn't seem to be any way to get along with him. — Ed Grimm 1 min ago

@dhein I believe the thought about the chess game is that as someone on the autism spectrum, we have to think about our conversations at least 3 moves ahead if we're going to come through them unscathed. But at least 7 moves ahead if we want to end up where we intended. This chess game is why I spend most conversations with more than one other person silently observing, and when I do have something to say, it's about something from 10 minutes ago. — Ed Grimm 42 secs ago

Also keep in mind that there is an energy cost associated with spending time determining why a monitor is not working on a working computer, during which time the computer is using up far more power than the monitor would. One such incident would cost more energy than the amount of savings from a month of having the monitor off rather than standby. As far as whether it's applicable to computer monitors - roughly 50% of the monitors I've had die on me died during a power on event. Admittedly, most of those were CRT monitors. — Ed Grimm 1 min ago

while I agree with this, in many countries, companies benefit from federal/government help when hiring "disabled" people (France too?). Is it possible that this may impact (in a positive manner) the way her boss reacts? — OldPadawan 42 secs ago

@Ælis I'm a confused when you say " there is literally no way I would be able to find a part-time without changing career": isn't that what you are planning to do at your current job? — DaveG 52 secs ago

This is a good answer (and makes what I was typing mostly redundant!), but I think that another important element is that the OP is still in a probationary period. The employer is probably more prepared to discover and deal with issues like this one during that period rather than afterwards, and both the employer and the OP are still "trying things out". If I were the OP's boss I would respond favorably to hearing about the issue during the probationary period and early after the OP noticed it, especially with a direct and professional approach (as described here). — Upper_Case 28 secs ago

Hi Maxim, welcome to IPS. I'm not sûre that this kind of discussion fits on this stack. You may want to search about the "Caesar effect" (that's what I've read about but not sure it's the proper word to explain the idea) but I'm pretty sure it has some explanation on psychology.se and you may want to try over there ;) — OldPadawan 1 min ago
