Q: How can I invite someone to chat?

quiet flyerI've been using SE for years now (specifically mostly Aviation SE) and still have no idea how to "invite someone to chat". (Edit: if it matters-- and I'm now realizing that it might-- these questions are really specifically for Aviation Stack Exchange, and any other SE communities where the chat ...

I will just remind that unless you're present in some chatroom, the button with "invite user to" will not be shown. In case it is useful, here is a similar FAQ post on Mathematics Meta: How do I invite a user to chat?Martin 3 mins ago

Q: How do I invite a user to chat?

SohamYesterday, discussion in my question's comment section was getting long so I transferred it to chat and had a long talk with another person. Now, if I want to talk to that user in chat what should I do? Is there any way to invite him again to that chat room? Thanks for any help.

@MartinSleziak -- I think maybe it is sorted out now--
If that's the case, great!
I didn't realize that I had to be in a chat room, to be able to see the "invite this user"... tab--
One quick question though-- hang on--
Ok it was this-- "Also, in the case where the person has been in the chat room before and has left a chat message, then if I "reply" to his/her message, does he/she get a notification in his/her inbox even if he/she is not currently in any chat room?"
(And similarly if I just put a new message in that room with an "@username" -- if they've been in that room before, are they going to get a notification even if not currently in any room?)
Well I guess I could sign out of all rooms and then that will give the answer, if you reply in a few minutes--

Q: Does a direct reply to a message in chat create a notification, no matter what age the message is?

MartinI know about these two possibilities when user is notified about the message in chat: One is using @username syntax. The other one is direct reply to the message. This can be chosen after clicking on the arrow left to the message either in chatroom or in transcript, see the screenshot here. (Or ...

Q: Does ping work in chat with no autocompletion?

jinaweeI know that if an user has been recently in chat, you can ping him (autocompletion will appear when you start to type @user). Does this hold if autocompletion doesn't appear?

In short, if I want to use '@username`, I simply start typing, for example "@q" and I am offered your username.
If I am not offered your username, then even if I typed it, you wouldn't get a notification.
So in this case, typing @quietflyer should create a notification in your inbox.
A notification in chat if it remains unread will eventually be shown in your global inbox - I think somewhere there is a setting how fast that should happen.
And, as you correctly guessed, replying to somebody's message should give them a notification.
@quietflyer For example, here I clicked on "reply to this message" - so together you should get two notifications from my messages.
Here is one of them - based on using @username:

So in this case, typing @quietflyer should create a notification in your inbox.
And the second one is from replying to your message:

@MartinSleziak Yes, it did. OK, I think I understand the system better now, thanks very much.
No problem!
@quietflyer BTW you don't need to copy-paste text from comments manually as you did here: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/144514/2023/3/10
If you post a message which contains a link to a comment (and nothing else) then it is oneboxed.
For example:

@Martin -- that helps! — quiet flyer 24 mins ago
In this way, you have in chat both - the text of the comment (including the username and the timestamp) and the link to the comment.

@MartinSleziak Wow, that's super-helpful. But I actually didn't know you could link to comments. Can you walk me through how to do that?
Oh, you click on the date, right? Then you copy the url of the new window that comes up?
Test of link to some random comment:
I made chat room for this question-- chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/144514/…. Have primarily focused on diagram in other answer but feel free to chime in with any more input re your answer. Got it! Thanks--
One more test, I want to see what happens if the comment gets deleted--
A random comment to be deleted soon -- — quiet flyer 33 secs ago
Then the link just redirects to the Q or A-- got it. Wish I had figured that out a long time ago! Thanks much--
As with many other things, links to comments were brought up on meta before: Direct Link to a Comment.

Got it, not surprising-- it just never occurred to me to even look for that--
