@Tyyppi_77 Being a tool developer is a thing :)
I'd say video games have gone that far, that making both the programming and the design, is quite tiresome. Not impossible, but not easy without having one affecting the other in some way.

10:36 AM
hello

Hey @trollingchar, how's it going?

I'm working
Also trying to learn Rust

Ooh, what for ?

nwp
I've been messing with JavaScript ECMAScript6. It's kinda fun. I miss being able to specify types though.

@TomTsagk fun

10:42 AM
@trollingchar Fair enough! I've heard really good things about it, what do you think so far?
@nwp Is this your first interaction with Javascript? :P

@TomTsagk An interesting language. However I have just started and can not say anything else

nwp
@TomTsagk Not quite. I've messed with a filter thing before for a Greasemonkey plugin.

@nwp You are in for a wild trip. You'll need life insurance, preferably with psychiatrist sessions included.
@trollingchar Looking forward to hear your opinion in a few weeks, I've heard its speed is compared with languages like C

3 hours later…
2:21 PM
@TomTsagk

@Vaillancourt 👀❄

I like snow. The more the better!

@Vaillancourt Woooooooooooow
Is that in your area?!

@TomTsagk Nope, that's in Newfoundland :/

Oh wow, that looks insane! I don't think I've ever seen so much snow

2:33 PM
Me neither, not in one shot

If I had that near my home, I'd just want to jump through it

Oh yeah!

How does one move to Newfoundland again? haha

@TomTsagk I guess there are :P
Nowadays, anywhere you go, a shitstorm can hit you.

3:27 PM
As someone coming from a gender-based language, how does one in english usually find a gender for an inanimate object?
One example I can think of, is people here referring to StackOverflow as "our sister site StackOverflow".

@TomTsagk From the English lessons I had in grade/high school, you just learn it. The same way you'd learn genders in a gender-based language.

So is the word "site" always meant to be feminine? That makes sense
I don't think I've heard the phrase "our brother site" :P

I wouldn't know the details, sorry.
I know a ship is a She :P
but that's about it ;)

That's interesting, I always thought there are no genders (even implied ones) in english
And everything inanimate is an "it"

They say "learn English, it's easy!", no, it's not.

3:38 PM
there's a rating system for how hard a language is to learn according to which ones you already know
I can't find it though... I'm only finding ratings based on already knowing english :(

I would say learning german is easier than english for me, because it feels like the whole language is extremely structured

one example is english -> chinese is frickin hard because there are so many deep structural differences
english -> french isn't nearly as bad because as least the characters are the same and many words are shared

I've met people going from english to learn chinese, and I can confirm
If I'm not wrong, they learn all the different characters non-stop during school, so it's not like someone can learn the whole language in a small amount of time

4:17 PM
Hi

user92578
sup

What's been happening while I've been gone

@TheMaskedRebel We grew older.

Just pronunciation in Chinese is a nightmare for us because of the four (I think there are four) intonations.

SE seems to be in a little bit of trouble?

4:31 PM
looks like it to me
at least from our perspective

What's happening

if they have enough clients for SO Enterprise, then they don't really need us anymore.

I left a couple years ago

They're trying to go public, so they have to get their revenue numbers up.
that means corporate-style decision making is taking over (This is an opinion)

And I want to know whether its really worth it to rejoin

4:32 PM
depends on how you feel about the moderator mess
this is a good reference
it includes links to things that will explain what it happening
I'm not planning to leave, but I don't have high hopes for what SE will look like in 5 years.

@Almo Their posts sound like some PR edited script

agreed

Maybe I'll just lurk here for a while and see what happens

Things are most likely not change in chat.
At least, I hope :D

user92578
Yeah nothing is happening here, go to SE meta for the drama.

4:43 PM
not going to change*
I haven't seen anything touching the chat yet; although it's not where the devs put their effort.

@Tyyppi_77 Meta chat or the meta website

@TheMaskedRebel Meta website.
Or the Teacher's lounge (chat)
:P

user92578
cool kids club

Yeah, gotta be on the bouncer's list.

A: Firing Community Managers: Stack Exchange is not interested in cooperating with the community, is it?

Juan MYou all should know that this is very hard for us. This is what I am able to share: As you have seen, today there were some changes on the Community Team. Out of respect for their privacy, we aren’t able to comment on any specific current or former employees. We’re seeking to align the company...

Sounds like a drafted statement

4:55 PM
> You all should know that this is very hard for us.

> We’re seeking to align the company so that it can continue growing in 2020 and we continue to be committed in investing in the community and ensuring that it has a seat at the table as we keep moving forward.

Here, "for us" means "community managers". They're kind of stuck between the community and the upper management.

@TheMaskedRebel yeah this line struck me as really dorky

THE COMMUNITY IS NOT A SHAREHOLDER
What's SO enterprise anyway

The community is the product. Just like with Facebook.

5:02 PM
@brug Less than before, they push for SO for Teams (and careers).

@Vaillancourt True. SO already has enough of a repository of knowledge that it would still remain a go to reference for years to come.
Meaning selling ads to visitors. (Which once again doesn't mean us anyway as most of us see very few of the ads.)

@brug Yes.

I use ad blockers anyway

user92578
I do feel like a lot of stuff is also deprecating pretty fast

same.

5:04 PM
@Tyyppi_77 Like?

@Tyyppi_77 Yes but if SO stopped doing new Q&A, how long would they still remain useful?

user92578
Any JS library is already obsolete :D

Years prolly. Even as knowledge gaps began to grow they would remain for years.

user92578
@brug Years, but I'd say dead in probably 5?

Years is a long time to bring in capital at that level with no continued investment while focusing on other enterprises.

user92578
5:07 PM
I don't think it actually is, especially as I feel like the ad revenue can't be a whole lot

It's a lot if they are already considering the whole thing no longer worth the effort to maintain anyway.

I don't think they consider shutting the SO down, maybe just shut the "community" aspect of it.
Is there a community for Quora?

user92578
What's "community" here? Chat + Meta?

user92578
Comments?

user92578
User profile pages?

5:17 PM
Good question. I think mainly Meta, then chat. Comments are (supposed be) there for content improvement.

I think for the point I am making the Community is the high-end contributors. The people who put in the bulk of the effort making the content. It is their contributions that make the content valuable.

5:36 PM
@brug What about those who don't produce content but make sure the content that is there is of high quality? Voters, flaggers/flag handlers, commenters, etc

@Vaillancourt Yes everyone that puts in effort to make the content valuable. That's the community. Not just high rep users.

user92578
ooh

user92578
5:53 PM
So I've been using std::variant very heavily in my codebase, basically replacing usual inheritance/interface based polymorphism with static polymorphism, and I'm quite liking it, but I dunno if it's the best practise

user92578
Like neverever would I have considered using this many unions anywhere

I guess if it works for you... :)

user92578
As a state machine I can justify it easily

We use shared_ptr because we did not want to implement a handle infrastructure... so in this context, "yeah, it's shared, but there should be only one instance"...
