@Almo if you ask me i dont really see a point to change something that wasnt really necessary to change. People could easily break ruin or just tap gens. Doesnt seem like a necessary change to me.

1:20 AM
@0x00004 looks like some people are having issues...

2:14 AM
@0x00004 it was absolutely necessary to change
It was unhealthy for Survivor play, it contributed to lack of Killer perk diversity, and it gave people a false sense of how long it should take for the first couple gens to go.
everyone on the Design team, including the creative director all say it needed to change.
The new version requires Killer input to function, while the old one was completely passive.
"easily break ruin" only if you could find it; new players can barely find generators let alone hex totems
"just tap gens" which is really dorky behavior. if a game mechanic is encouraging something that silly, there's a problem
gen tapping only works because one second must pass before the first skill check can happen.
using that as an integral play mechanic is silly.

Hey all

hello

How's it going?

slowly

Half-way to friday, we have to keep positive! :P

too positive leads to integer overflow
My friend used integer overflow to kill players in creative mode in old versions of minecraft
2
He made an extremely high level potion of instant health
healing does not count as damage so creative mode does not block it
however this seems to be fixed in newer versions
I have decided to not trying to make a universal all-purpose weapon class, but make base classes for actual weapons instead, and then define only what they shoot
simple approach is often the best

10:38 AM
Didn't know minecraft had that :P
Did characters at least revive as expected?

yes
the potion only is obtainable via commands though

Ah, so it's kind-off a hackish way to get it

Q: How to create a new civilization mod for Age of Empires 1 Definitive Edition?

JohnDoeaI want to make a mod for Age of Empires 1 Definitive Edition, in which I split an existing civilization (Phoenicians) into two civilizations: Eastern Phoenicians: Primarily representing Canaanites Western Phoenicians: Primarily representing Carthaginians I want to do so to fix an historical ...

2:23 PM
Today that bugged device behaves differently, it's like every day there are new rules: "every bug crashes the app instantly", "when you're looking, bugs don't happen", "at night, processes turn to zombies" or "every time you guess what rule is active today, another random rule activates immediately". I'm joking of course, the third rule is no longer possible.
It doesn't like the new update.

2:40 PM
I know the feeling, yesterday everything was working as expected, yet today it doesn't even compile

yesterday the rule was "every bug crashes the app instantly"
today it's "every time you guess what rule is active today, another random rule activates immediately", and I can't guess what rule is active

But if the rule is "every time you guess what rule is active today, another random rule activates immediately", and you are aware of it, wouldn't that cause it to change?

nwp
No, it just causes another rule to activate. The old rule is still in effect.

So it's better if you stop guessing, because less rules will be in effect?

The goal of this game is to activate a secret rule: "works as intended"

nwp
2:46 PM
Not really. "Every bug crashes the app instantly" is a bad one, you really want to add the rule "except when it`s full moon" because then you can at least use it for a little while. Keep adding rules until it works in the situations you need it to.
This is worse than what Hollywood dreams up :D

BTW, other devices work. Problems are with this particular one.

nwp
Burn this particular device, declare your job done. Easy 10x developer.

Aaaah, one can only dream

@nwp Fire only makes it stronger
@nwp If I expose its screen to moonlight, will it transform into a device that is easier to debug?

nwp
"Only debuggable during moonshine" is a possible rule, not sure you want that one.

2:53 PM
But it's at least debuggable

nwp
I really want one of those 16 or 32 core CPUs. Why do I have a quadcore?

@nwp Same here. Don't you wish it was like in a crafting game? Round up 4 quadcores, add some upgrade-o-tanium & then BAM, 16 core CPU.

nwp
Compared to the salary it's not even a relevant cost. But the salary is budgeted and the CPU upgrade is not. It makes sense, but still.

3:14 PM
Ah. In my case, I've just been reluctant to do the work of putting together a new build. It always feels like 5 minutes after I do so, the next cycle of tech clicks over & I'm left feeling like I've overpaid for outdated gear.

nwp
It doesn't need to be the latest and greatest, but those extra cores would help compilation times quite a bit.

4:02 PM
Good morning!

Morning!

I'm happy that we haven't had too bad of a winter this year, up to now!

It's the same in the UK, I thought we were already going to a better weather, but slowly I've started feeling the cold :(

Ah :/ Here, it's the freezing rain that we don't have so much :P
(And the rain)
I prefer cold and snow

I prefer the snow as well, but the rain is just a daily thing
Maybe it's because I don't drive, but when its snowing, I feel like a child again, and ignore the cold

4:14 PM
When you get snow, how long does it lasts on the ground?
Ah, yeah :P
Here we are required to have winter tires ;)

Two years ago it snowed and it all stayed white for like a few weeks, last year I'm not sure if it snowed, can't remember
So far this year we've seen no snow
I'm not surprised, when I imagine Canada I always imagine it snowing

The nasty thing is when you get snow, then rain, then freezing rain, then snow, and then -20... Makes it hard to shovel, makes sidewalks un-walkable, we spent half of last year's winter with think layer of ice on our street, I could literally "boot skate" a lot when walking home from work.

Oh wow, I don't think I've ever experienced that

@TomTsagk It was like that all over the place (in Québec) when I was a kid. Now, in Montreal, we get some rain often. Québec City is more like that, snow all the time.

How tall does the snow get on the ground?

4:23 PM
Depends where. Where I live, it can get up to 45 cms when we get a lot of snow and not a lot of rain or warmer temperatures. Around Quebec city, it happened to go as high as a door height. (Total accumulation during the whole winter.) And you can get more as you go further up north.

Woah, that sounds both interesting and terrifying at the same time
I've seen gifs of people opening their front door and see snow everything, but it feels so unreal

People not coming from here get partially used to it, and people that come from here can also be fed up by it ;)

Does that happen every year?

@Vaillancourt I've never seen snow in my entire life...
..SAD..

@AbhasKumarSinha If you don't mind me asking, where are you from?

4:28 PM
@TomTsagk India.

@TomTsagk Like this?

Oh wow, so it never snows there? Didn't know that
Omg I remember this gif!
It looks so much like it came from another world

@TomTsagk no, there are snowy regions too, but the place where I live doesn't gets much

@TomTsagk I've never experienced it, but that's something one can get if there is a big snow storm, and that your door is at the right spot ;)

@Vaillancourt Cool, Isn't that cold./

4:30 PM
@AbhasKumarSinha That's not an impossible goal. Come to Canada during the winter ;)

@Vaillancourt That looks pretty fun to be honest

@Vaillancourt Probably next year.

@AbhasKumarSinha ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ for some, I guess. I think it's cold, but I don't mind.

@Vaillancourt Do you use room heaters.../

@TomTsagk I'd say it's funny until snow gets inside the house, where it melts and destroys your precious floor ;)
@AbhasKumarSinha Yeah, the houses are insulated too.

4:32 PM
That's true, that would be annoying :/
Do you at least get less insects because of the cold?

@Vaillancourt Okay, we have fans on and windows opened during days.
@TomTsagk yep, very less.

I guess, we don't have insects during the winter ;)
@AbhasKumarSinha We have that too, during the summer :D

That's a massive plus in my book, I'm not friends of insects :P

@Vaillancourt We have very high temperatures during summer, sometimes, 42 deg C
@TomTsagk Ask municipal for insect repeallant sprays, they are good ones and don't smell.

@AbhasKumarSinha We get to 30 ;)

4:35 PM
@AbhasKumarSinha Thanks for the advice! I'm in the UK fortunately, which is quite cold

@Vaillancourt That's still not cold.

Plus I befriend the local spiders, which seem to enjoy any insect around

That's what makes our houses and everything more expensive to build. We can go from -20 to +10 within a few days...
@AbhasKumarSinha No, I meant our highs are in the 30s during the summer. And our lows are -30 during the winter.
@TomTsagk I keep those around too. My SO does not share my views on the matter, though ;)

@Vaillancourt Oh okay, Rest in Peace then, how do you go outside to play in such cold.

Aww I get that, they don't look very friendly
Hopefully there aren't any poisonous spiders where I live, not sure if that's different in Canada

4:37 PM
There are very less spiders here.

@Vaillancourt Cool spacesuit, thanks for sharing....

@TomTsagk This never worried me, so I don't think there is.

Omg that looks so confy

@AbhasKumarSinha That's what you get when you search for "ski suit".

4:39 PM
comfy*

@Vaillancourt what is ski..../

You feel invincible when it's cold outside and you're dressed for it.

@AbhasKumarSinha a winter sport. you attach a board to each of your feet, and you slide down a mountain. Or you do it on flat ground..

@Vaillancourt Got it, it's called by a different name here.

4:41 PM
@AbhasKumarSinha Okay!

user92578
Are you saying that a different language has a different word for skeeing?

@Vaillancourt Is this suit why every time I see someone skiing, they look like nothing can stop them?

@Vaillancourt Do you have bears there..../
Imagine what happens to those who are in Russia..../ Klol/

@TomTsagk Haha I don't think so ;)
@AbhasKumarSinha Yeah.
@AbhasKumarSinha Hmm?

@Vaillancourt Have you seen them/

4:47 PM
@AbhasKumarSinha No, fortunately.

@Vaillancourt Are they dangerous/ Can they be touched/

@AbhasKumarSinha Yeah/no! You don't want to encounter a bear. Take great precautions to not attract them and such. When you go camping, you need to pull your food up high, lock it safely and such.

@Vaillancourt okay...
@Vaillancourt Are there pandas too/

@AbhasKumarSinha No, only in zoos :)

@Vaillancourt okay... I'll try to see them when I'll come to canada.

nwp
4:51 PM
I saw a description for what to do when attacked by a bear and all you have a knife. You just grab the knife tightly and stab the bear as many times as you can before it kills you. The record is 34 stabs. See if you can beat it, you'll die anyways, may as well try.

@nwp Better stab yourself and save the bear?
2

@nwp Okay... Learn Tiger style Kung Fu then.

You have more chances playing dead

@TomTsagk No.. way... I'm professionally trained.
@Vaillancourt Or even better, give knife to Bear to stab you.
hehehehe
Around 0.27....
OMFG...
They are very fast....

@AbhasKumarSinha That would be an option too :)

5:00 PM
@Vaillancourt hehehehe....

user92578
Has anyone experimented with GitHub Actions? I was thinking if I might be able to setup automatic building & maybe automated testing there, but for a game project it might be tricky given the storage limitations

user92578
By automated testing here I mean perhaps playing back some inputs to validate things work & the game is playable

user92578
But maybe I should bother to setup some unit tests too

@Tyyppi_77 Haven't used that feature.

nwp
5:18 PM
I use travis-ci.org for that. It's kinda annoying because interacting with the VM is difficult, but otherwise it's pretty straightforward. Just steal a .travis.yml file from somewhere and modify it a bit and you're good to go.
There is no setting up github actions involved, travis handles that.

That allows build on commit and tests on commit?

user92578
That looks nice except I don't really want to put money into this, and that seems to cost money for private repos

nwp
@Vaillancourt On pushes, yeah, commits are local. It basically just does a pull whenever you push and runs the script you provide.

I use Tortoise SVN, good for me,

user92578
We use SVN with Tortoise SVN at work, and it's way too basic for programmer use IMO

user92578
5:23 PM
Super nice to use for artists, but the lack of local commits is a big minus in my books

user92578
No easy local branches

@nwp Oh, yeah, sorry :) Used to SVN.
@Tyyppi_77 Why can't you do server branches?

user92578
Dunno if we could but that's not the same

user92578
Like if I'm working on a feature locally, and then a big bug comes up that I need to fix before I can continue with the feature

nwp
I actually thought about just copying travis and having a VM running that pulls and builds. It has the added bonus of being able to log into the VM and debugging. But it's effort to set that up. Maybe you can find someone who did that already, I'm sure that's a commonly needed things.

5:26 PM
Then you commit to your working branch then switch?

user92578
There's no personal working branches, is that a thing people actually use?

yeah ;)
It's not a "software feature", it's how you use it.

user92578
Well nonexistent local branches is a software feature

Does anyone here wants to see a real Dinosaur.../

We have personal branches where we work. Once the task is done, we have the branch reviewed then we can merge that to the trunk.
What difference does it make if it's local or server?
@AbhasKumarSinha No.

nwp
5:28 PM
I use a dev branch and a master branch. Develop in dev where you break things and merge to master when things work. Naturally the master branch is effectively abandoned.

@Vaillancourt Okay...

user92578
Not everything needs to be on a server, if I just need to try out a few different solutions to a problem

user92578
How many programmers do you have working on stuff?

@Tyyppi_77 5; we were up to 7. 12 in the previous place where I worked.
What difference does it make?

user92578
Feels to scale quickly into merge hell

user92578
5:32 PM
I gotta say that I don't fully understand what's going on behind our repo architecture so I don't really know the reasons for everything

Not really; there are less ways to shoot yourself in the foot (compared to git). The revisions are only increasing, what happens is super easy to follow.

user92578
Also I'm pretty bad with git branches too, so maybe this branch bit isn't as good of a point as local commits

nwp
I hate git too, but I learned to live with it.
Branches are annoying, submodules are annoying, otherwise it's pretty ok.

Both have their advantages. I'm fine using SVN; I don't need local branches, and when I do, I just create a new branch on the server. Once I convinced by boss that branches are for that, well, life went better ;)

user92578
Sort of a topic hop, sorry:

user92578
5:36 PM
#define Choose(_1, _2, _3, macro, ...) macro
#define DoThing(...) Choose(__VA_ARGS__, MacroWithThreeParams, MacroWithTwoParams)(__VA_ARGS__)

user92578
I use this kind of trick to "overload" a macro based on the number of parameters. However now I noticed that I'd actually only like to choose between a two parameter version and a three or more parameter version

user92578
Any ideas how to do that?

nwp
That counts as gore and gets you immediately banned.

user92578
This is for a really fucking cool reflection macro system though, it saves me so much time

user92578
But as macros suck, I can't pass anything with commas to the current third paramater, so I'd need to be able to recompose that

nwp
5:40 PM
Can you not get around that problem with typedefs?

user92578
The third parameter is an initializer, so I guess I could just define the constant on the line above and pass it in, but I'd also kinda want to get it working without doing that

nwp
Also in C++42 your reflection system will be obsolete :D

user92578
Yup, super waiting for that

user92578
Issue is Property(float, Gravity, 12.0f) works fine, but Property(Vector2, Force, {1.0f, 1.0f}); doesn't

user92578
I wonder if I should have just not done a macro version and do a cleaner template wrapper thing instead, but that would add the reflection overhead per instance instead of per type

6:33 PM
Hopefully, Herb Sutter will not have retired by then!
@Tyyppi_77 Can't help you with that, sorry; brain is busy with something else :S

2 hours later…
8:15 PM
@Vaillancourt do you strew ice with salt or sand?

8:36 PM
@trollingchar I put gravel on our steps and entrance paths. Neighbours put salt. The City puts a mix of both, depending on the situation.
