12:41 AM
hey

Good evening!

1:26 AM
Filling my tax return. Fun fun fun!

Did you give the government a sizable interest free loan that they must now repay?

Something like that, yeah.

5 hours later…
6:57 AM
@Kevin i feel you...

Super simple cellular automata, but it's pretty fun to jump around with double jump

nwp
"Cellular automata" as in "game of life"?

user92578
yup

user92578
less than 3 neighbours -> dead, more than 4 -> alive

nwp
Does the character count as a neighbor?

user92578
1:15 PM
no

user92578
I just do a few iterations of the rules at startup

nwp
Oh. I thought it was continuous and the character could grow stuff.
Maybe one could build something like that.

user92578
oh no, all though that might be interesting

4:39 PM
Brought to mind a cellular automaton glitch I was showing my students yesterday:
Tried adding some cross-colour-channel influence, inadvertently opened a portal to an alternate maze universe. Um... #screenshotsaturday? https://t.co/QUJJvB2y4R

user92578
that's awesome

I want to find a purpose to put it toward, but I have no clue what.

Why u no make screensaviours?

Are screensavers still a thing?

Make Screensavers Great Again!
I don't know :P

4:49 PM
Though, I have been wanting to get in on the screensaver jam, it's just never been a good time for my schedule. ;)
I've wanted to make one that's a 2D RPG that plays itself, with a procedurally generated overworld the hero wanders around, battling monsters & leveling up the longer you let it run. XD
Kind of like Grow RPG but fully autonomous / endless

@DMGregory That's super wierd

Welcome to the inside of my head. ;)

That is a super rad accident. I especially liked where it reaches the tipping point to looking like lava colored fireworks.

@DMGregory It's entertaining, though!

Reminds me of some stuff from an old artificial life sim book.

5:02 PM
Oooh. That's a lot to dig into...

Author also wrote some of the first cyberpunk novels. His ALL book covers a bunch of different cellular automata rules & sims.
Yeah, there's a bunch of neat stuff & yet ALL is a pretty light read.
Sadly the software that shipped with it would need a bit of work to get going again - I think it's circa Windows 3.1
Maybe something like DOSBox or the like would work though.
@DMGregory anyway props on discovering a cool accident w/ your class - those are the moments I miss most from teaching.
That & seeing their expressions when some new big idea finally clicks.

1 hour later…
6:26 PM
@DMGregory hey, that's not easy

6:37 PM
Soooo satisfying when you beat it though! :D

Kay
@DMGregory grow games are the best. Each year when I would visit my cousin (which lives in a different country) we would revisit the grow website and see if sth new came out

I like how it flips the challenge from being a hero fulfilling your destined quest against a world out of your control, to being destiny itself, constructing a world in which the hero out of your control can fulfill their quest.

6:54 PM
Did any of you complete Chronon?
I didn't, that was fuckin hard

Never heard of it. But then again, I live in a cave, gaming-wise.

It's one of the Grow guy's games

Ditto. Has kind of a nice look though.
At a glance I would say, kind of a first person version of the Witness.
which I also haven't played.

The Witness is great
I recommend it

Every time I try some new game, I seem to stray back to Binding of Isaac.

7:00 PM
haha
I kind of liked binding of issac, but it was pretty unpolished

Did you play the original or the re-released version after he ditched Flash?
The Flash version had some serious bugs, slow down & balance issues.

Kay
@Pikalek but wasnt the new one visually awful ?

I played BoI on steam, OSX

@Kay We call it aesthetic. And also talk in third person. We think it makes us cultured. Like yogurt.
@Almo As I recall both versions are on Steam.

Kay
I call them like i sees 'em

7:07 PM
Ah, no idea if I played before or after flash
bought it 1/10/2012

Just checked - BoI: Rebirth is the newer, not ActionScript one.

ah, ok not played that.

Content wise, I believe it has most everything from the original, but some things got tweaked & a ton of other poop (ha ha Isaac joke) added in.

5 hours later…
11:47 PM
hey room
