I own a car now

@coffeemancer Congratulations :)

@coffeemancer :)

thanks
I'm a real human bean

I know some places where owning a car is kind of a curse.

1:09 AM
The Plateau
eesh

Yep
Where I lived before was annoying too.
I did not need the car, so I could leave it parked in the street all the time. Except I had to change it side twice a week so that they could clean the street, and then in the winter there is no spot when there was snow...

yeah
we've had indoor assigned parking the whole time we've been in MTL

That's the best, specially if you don't use it often. I heard in-out during the winter still kills it with rust because the snow has not enough time to dry out inside (with the salt)

we do rust proofing every year
seems to work

Ok, we should too heheh but it's too late :/

1:20 AM
:D

2 hours later…
3:15 AM
We're using an open source rendering engine, it comes with a "stats handler" that displays data and charts about the scene. The source code of that part looks like shit. I've been re implementing something similar over that engine, as this handler does not offer features that we need. The code of that part is slowly starting to look like shit.
As if code for that kind of stuff was doomed to become ugly.

I really think it is

7:33 AM
Good morning!

@Almo I forgot to mention that the turnbased game is not just exchanging turns and choosing whatever action you want to do like in these standard JRPGs but also takes place on a grid. So that will increase the difficulty by a little :p

2 hours later…
12:00 PM
@Tyyppi_77 Ok, so that's not just me here..
@Kay Yeah, early morning :)
@DMGregory Did you get your view of the close votes review queue to zero?

Nope, still have some items in queue.

All right. I'll do a pass today.
Thanks! Not sure if we should go through it more often :/

Ah, apparently it's just the 24 fps animation in 60 fps game in my view at the moment.

@DMGregory Ah, ok, so you only have one.
I have like 20 :P

I've been a bit fidgety and going through it as something to do. Though I'm still skipping a lot that I don't want to close unilaterally.

12:15 PM
Yeah; that's the way to go I think, at least for those equipped with Mjölnir.
The should change the ♦ with 🔨...
hmmmm..... userscript...

Hehehee. :)

Kay
Is it just me or whenever I work with unity I seem to seperate the actual objects from the unity objects kinda in a MVVM way

I've done that on occasion. Usually when I have a bunch of game state I want to pack and manipulate in one place, rather than distributing it between a lot of objects. Then I let the game objects just reflect / communicate that underlying state.

1 hour later…
1:43 PM
@Kay Not really. Grids are easy. X, Y. done.

@Almo The Z axis anarchy chafes at your implied XY superiority. The only way up is Z+! Look beyond the XY horizon! Rise up into the 3rd dimension! Break the 4th wall!!
Also, until further notice, I hereby revoke all diplomatic privileges previously granted to particle emitters.

2:02 PM
hahaha

Kay
Amen ?
Its simple, just take the hydraulic phase shift emulator and attach it to the transdimensional photon particle emitter

@Pikalek This sounds like a story. [Gets comfy with a mug of cocoa] Do go on... :)

2:25 PM
The XY hegemony is a paper tiger, intended to circumvent the destiny of humankind in order to bring about the false Singularity thereby corrupting our collective psyche. Signs abound. the refutation of the ABC conjecture. Economic unrest. Fluoride. You can't make this stuff up.

Excellent TimeCube homage. :)

Meanwhile big pharma profits from the unrelenting schematics of temporal interest rates. This to is a red fish. How many chambers do the Wu-Tang really possess? What is the nature of dark matter? How's been messing with my coffee? With careful consideration, all of these question lead us to the same conclusion.

That particle emitters make poor diplomats?

Was not familiar with the scholarly works of Otis Ray. Clearly part of the conspiracy of the far middle.
No, but they grief me something fierce when I try to attach them to the screen space rather than the world space.

Mm, yes, that makes sense. Are you in a particular engine or your own particle implementation?

2:37 PM
Engine library code. I've just now found a forum post where one of the devs offers a solution.
Nice! It even works.
I kinda wish it kept the 1-1 pixel to screen space ratio, but it'll do for now.

Sweet! I'm glad you were able to broker peace with the nation of Particle Systemia. :)

Yes! Now I can finish my coffee & work on using it for something productive instead of .. umm, doing whatever this might have been. And they still need to do something about that flag of theirs - drops my frame rate. I know it's technically a collection of threads, but come on.

I believe in Particle Systemian culture they're called "ribbons" ;)

2:52 PM
That would explain their trade agreements with the Recursive Republic of RRoR - flags are collections of ribbons, each of which is itself a flag.

2 hours later…
4:56 PM
The good thing about taking the day off is that you can listen to whatever music you feel like :P
(I could do this at work, but without the headphones is something.)

user92578
man I am so happy to be programming with a real programming language

user92578
the one that I have to use in my service job is like the most inconsistent thing ever

user92578
it uses if (), but while {} and logically for []

user92578
I've been working on adding text selection to the few text entries in GunHero

user92578
quite a few rules to implement, actually

5:07 PM
@Tyyppi_77 So you rinse the corruption with good ol' c++?

user92578
yup

@Tyyppi_77 That's a custom language?

user92578
yeah

6:52 PM
@AlexandreVaillancourt encouraging bad formatting.
tsk
put spaces around your operators, man! :D

?
oh, the floor question

:D
WANNA GET IN AN EDIT FIGHT?!?!
;)

( are not operators!

6:55 PM
I wonder if compilers do any kind of modular magic to convert floor(x - 1) / 10 + 1 to floor (x + 9) / 10

((level - 1) / 10)
you crazy bastard
:D

oh, I guess without range constraints, you can't generically transform that because x + 9 could overflow

Ah, well we put spaces inside the parenthesis where I work :)

I've actually never seen code like that
now "floor(" is uncomfortably close ... they're the only two adjacent tokens in your expression.
You guys should start putting spaces before parens for uniformity

you guys are nuts

7:02 PM
Not sure I want to re-write 20 years of code ;)

numberOfDice = floor((Level - 1) / 10) + 1
@AlexandreVaillancourt Use a code formatter

@Almo That's most likely how I would write code, but that's not for me to decide ;) You can edit my answer if it annoys you :D

hahah not a big enough deal to worry about ;)

rewrite everything in a concatenative language and eliminate parens
: numberOfDict level 1 - 10 / floor 1 +

@Almo Hmm the only tool like that that we use is the VS's editor that will happily put spaces where we want it to, but I'm not aware of any other formatter tool. And I'm not sure I'd want to use it, at will most likely mess up our other nicely aligned things.

7:18 PM
depends, I've always been able to get VS to do what I want by messing with the settings then ctrl-a ctrl-k, ctrl-f.
But maybe your formatting is more complex than mine.
still, it makes a fucking mess of your version control history to do that kind of thing.

@Almo How so? It's just another revision?

viewing the changes between revision 1 and 3 where you fix formatting in 2 is unpleasant
if your codebase is super stable, then that shouldn't be such a big deal

Ah, well we don't do that often :)

hehe :)

yeah if you use git blame a lot you just wind up with 60% of the lines in the codebase git blamed to the one revision where someone converted all tabs so spaces

7:35 PM
@Jimmy Yeah, that's the only issue I could foresee.
We don't use it a lot though.
We're a good spirited team so we don't blame a lot.
;)
Maybe I could un-downvote 3 answers to get 12k rep?
Or maybe I could wait a bit, then downvote 2 answers?
haha so close!

:D

8:31 PM
Third song on their first album (necessary information to make (some) sense of the lyrics)
