5:10 AM
@AlexandreVaillancourt hello hello! what is new

3 hours later…
nwp
8:13 AM
@AlexandreVaillancourt Why bot? They should simply make it so when you link an image via URL it puts it on imgur instead of just taking the link. Might even want to make it not possible to link to any image not on imgur.

5 hours later…
1:11 PM
@nwp I guess it's because of copyright issues if they were just copying it over... The bot would just notify users who care that a potential link rot has been introduced!
@ChrisMcFarland not much, not much!

2:46 PM
GIMP ARGH (I'm doing some layout for a UI design I'm working on)

@Almo if you're using Windows, you might give Paint.net a try. Coming from a Photoshop background I found it to be easier to work with than GIMP.
@Almo although I probably should have started with this instead - what specifically are you trying to do?

3:05 PM
I have an image and I'm putting in fake UI elements
circles, squares, etc
over the long haul I'm trying to get more proficient with GIMP since it works on OSX as well, which I use at home for my own projects
the Cognizer graphics were done with GIMP
but I always have trouble with its interface, nothing is intuitive for me :(

@Almo Have you tried Inkscape? For something like that it might work better than either GIMP or Paint.NET & it's multi platform.

I have tried Inkscape
but i thought that was a vector tool
can I use it with images?
I have a screenshot from the game and I'm blopping stuff on top of it to suggest where UI elements may go

Yes, but you can import bitmaps in & then vector over the top of them.

ok got it thanks for suggestion :)

I did some card boxes for a table top game that way. Started with a vector layout of the box, imported some images with game icons & then added some vector graphics over the top.
It also takes some getting used to, but I found I was able to get something done without having to learn a whole paradigm - in my opinion, that's basically what Gimp does - asks you to submit to their unique workflow.

3:15 PM
yeah good point

That's just me though. If you've already internalized their system, I'm sure it's just as productive as anything else.

@Almo Reminded me of Liz England's bot litpatches_txt: twitter.com/litpatches_txt

@Pikalek not sure if I have yet. :)
:D
I actually read One Hundred Years of Solitude
frickin' weird man

Well, it's still free internet advice & might not address your situation. If you spend more than 30 minutes fighting with Inkscape, feel free to come back & tell me it didn't work :)
Good luck!

hahah :D

3:34 PM
just trying to move a layer in GIMP
argh
ok got it
man

3:50 PM
o/

'llo

4:10 PM
@genaray i really want to know how to expose the server to the outide world

4:37 PM
How's things going?

5:16 PM
@TheMaskedRebel to the outside world ? Well than you need a dedicated server.. i guess you are running your sfs instance on your local machine, right ?

2 hours later…
7:24 PM
@genaray Yes, I am

Well than... you can only acess the server from your own local network ^^
But people from outside wont acess it that easily

So what do I have to do

To acess it from outside the local network ?

jelastic.com here you go ^^ but it costs money... jelastic allows you to setup a dedicated sfs instance... for development you could still use the local instance... but you are the only one who can acess this one

7:29 PM
Can I open up my router to allow the server to accsess outside sources

look up port forwarding

Dont do that lol...

I already have...

that's how you do it

@genaray Why?

7:31 PM
or you can DMZ, but that's potentially dangerous

thats nearly a free acess for "hackers" even if the chance is low that someone wanna hack you

Is there a free dedicated server

you can test it for ... a week... if im right... but than you need to decide...
Why dont you develop on your local machine till your progress is good enough to rend a server ?

Evening

7:37 PM
@genaray Good idea

It's McFarland ...

@AlexandreVaillancourt well that's a bit boring

"The Developer"

VIDEO GAMES
tidying some outstanding bugs to get some stable testing going
how's life in Blizzard world

Good.
Going to China for a month tomorrow.
"doing stuff"
It's been a blast actually working directly on the game I've been modding and hacking for nearly a decade. :P

7:40 PM
woah are you at Blizzard now

Aye
Software Engineer on the Classic Team

I thought you were a taxi driver :P

I was :P Now I'm at Blizzard.
Turns out passion can open doors.
(that and actually applying yourself and learning programming)
:P

Coincidentally I'll also be in China in a couple weeks

Oh really? Where about?

7:43 PM
Out west in Sichuan

@WilliamMariager nice

I'm way east in Shanghai :P

You all talk about where you go... and im just like "well i guess ill stay in germany for the next few years"

@Almo do you enjoy poking yourself in the eye with a stick

8:00 PM
@ChrisMcFarland hahaha not particularly. ;)
@WilliamMariager you mean Classic WoW team?
@WilliamMariager you mean Classic WoW team?

Nah, classic like StarCraft 1, Diablo 1+2, Warcraft 1+2+3 :)

When is Diablo 1/2 HD coming out

oh man the whole range? that's cool

I'm not aware of any Diablo 1/2 HD version. Is it a mod?

no, just wishful thinking :P

8:03 PM
Ah :D

It'd be nice to to give them the Brood Wars treatment

Oh yeah, absolutely.
I was playing D2 with my wife recently ... still an awesome game. But it's not graceful. :P

@WilliamMariager OH still cool man. Cooler actually. :)
"not graceful" is putting it mildly. ;)
I almost got hired by Future Point to work on Starcraft Mac.
then they got bought by Blizzard before I could complete the deal
they were really small, like 3-4 people, and one of them found me in the SC mac beta chat room.

haha nice

one of them is head of network (I think) brian fitzgerald

8:12 PM
That's pretty cool.

1 hour later…
9:23 PM
Hello everyone. Quick question; would you say it's more important to have lots of diverse projects (some finished some not) or more important to have fewer but complete projects in ones "portfolio"? I was going to make a public Git with all of my (decent) projects to use a portfolio but many of my projects are unfinished projects that mostly show of one cool feature that I thought of and I thought maybe this would reflect badly on me?

what job are you applying for?

nwp
@AlexandreVaillancourt I thought everyone was forced into CC BY SA so anyone can copy any content of any stackexchange site (honoring the BY SA part) and there is nothing anyone can do about it.

that license doesn't cover the externally hosted image content though, assuming you're talking about the imageshack problem

nwp
9:39 PM
Hmm, I can see how "All content posted on SE is under CC BY SA" covers the link, but not what it links to, because that technically hasn't been posted. Makes sense.

9:54 PM
@Charanor Finished projects are more important, even if there are fewer of them.
4
these show you are not just a random hobbyist, but someone who is serious about making a completed product.

2 hours later…
11:26 PM
@ChrisMcFarland Sorry :/
:P
@Charanor I'll second @Almo on that. I think it's better to show fewer finished projects.
It helps to tell the others what you consider "finished".
