Ah, missed that, oops!

:) I'm not against those, not at all, but Unity seems not the best tool to achieve this. And this game type does not seem to be the best fit for a console, but if they design the game for that, I guess they could make it work!
I play angband on my tablet.

Hello!
@AlexandreVaillancourt don't forget that Diablo derived from Rogue!

1:24 AM
@TheMattbat999 i don't! Great game!

1:43 AM
@AlexandreVaillancourt I strangely haven't played it (yet) despite knowing more about it's origins than some of it's fans.
(Then again, alot of people probably don't even know what Rogue is, despite being the father to a pretty big genre)
@PintOfMilk no, Unity ports to almost everywhere. Soon you will be able to make games for your toaster, fridge, and shoes!

TomTsagkI'm still learning proper etiquette, and I'm not sure how to handle this. Recently I gave an answer here, and a couple of people gave some extra information as comments to my answer. In order to make my answer more complete, I added their suggestions to it, and also included their username, like...

Q: Generating the smallest sphere from a mesh

The Masked RebelI have a polygon which is defined by a set of vertices and I need the smallest sphere encompassing the mesh. The spheres are defined by a position vector(x,y,z) and a radius. How can I generate the smallest sphere encompassing the mesh that works in all cases. Edit 1 : This is not a duplicate...

Can someone reopen this

user92578
dunno

@Tyyppi_77 the main reason why the question is not a duplicate is because I am very specific about asking for the smallest sphere and he is not. Also, my meshes sometimes change at run time — The Masked Rebel 47 secs ago

user92578
i dont really care, you ignored nwp's solution really rudely yesterday so i dont feel like doing anything for you

@AlexandreVaillancourt can you please reopen my question

@Tyyppi_77 The FAQ said they had some pretty cool easter eggs on the site. I was wondering if you knew of one.

user92578
where does it say that?

@Tyyppi_77 Go to How do I talk and then expand the section. At the bottom, it says in bold that they are easter eggs on the chat

For the sake of reviving this dying room does anyone know of some easter eggs in this chat

@TheMaskedRebel I've been here for a while, and no, I don't.
Do you like Easter eggs?

@TheMaskedRebel - it depends - what sort of things are you looking for from a geometry stack? In the pure math sense, there's the math SE with 30+ geometry type tags (computational, axiomatic, hyperbolic, etc). math.stackexchange.com/tags

user92578
@TheMaskedRebel yeah this isnt gonna revive it

@Tyyppi_77 What will?

2:03 PM
@AlexandreVaillancourt yes

@TheMaskedRebel I think big corps tend to not like them. They cost money to develop and maintain.

Why are people leaving

FWIW, I'm trying to find ways to invite users to discuss their off-topic questions in chat when I close them.

2:08 PM
@TheMaskedRebel there's also geometry related content on the the computer graphics stack exchange. It's still in beta though & our community there hasn't quite reached critical mass, so the ratio of questions to answers isn't ideal. computergraphics.stackexchange.com

@Pikalek polygons and stuff like that

user92578
TBH I'm kinda here just so that when I need C++ help, I can get it

user92578
The Discord servers I'm in don't have C++ people

Been so long since I used C++...

user92578
Well, they kinda do but I don't want to bother them

2:10 PM
@TheMaskedRebel that's still pretty vague - what do you want to know about polygons? what type of polygons? What space are you attempting to operate in?

C++!!
I've decided to stop putting that on my programmer resume

@Pikalek im operating in 3D space using polyhedra

@Almo why?

I've not used it for so long, and with all the stuff from the new standards, I can't really say I'm competent in it anymore.

2:12 PM
@Almo fair enough. or maybe list it as retro C++. Maker of bespoke programs with lovingly hand crafted bugs.
For the record, my C++ has also fallen off the modernity wagon. I skimmed a book that just covered the most recent updates to the standard - it was like a completely different language from what I learned.

spam is repetitive

@AlexandreVaillancourt i suggest that you leave a comment on anyone's posts saying you can come to chat with [question] user, as soon as you get enough rep

nwp
It's fine when you mute every other channel.

2:26 PM
@AlexandreVaillancourt I think the chat idea is good - I wish that SE had someone built in for that sort of thing. In some cases directing people to gamedev.net is probably the most correct answer, esp for discussion based stuff, it does also kind of come off as dissimissive

Further to earlier answers I have decided to make my game open-source.

Why

nwp
Chat doesn't scale. And when something doesn't scale then it doesn't attract investors so it doesn't get done.

You're not going to gain much from open sourcing it unless other people are interested in the project. And then you'll lose design control over the game.

@AlexandreVaillancourt your chat solution is a functional alternative, but I don't think mods should need to jump through hoops to help build & foster community - if the system values that, it should be supported in the infrastructure

2:34 PM
So what license do you suggest I should put it under?
Maybe CC

Just make the game. don't worry about odd things like licenses. This stuff doesn't actually matter until you have a completed game.

@TheMaskedRebel I'm not doing on every post, only on those I close for too-broad/discussion oriented/off topic reasons.
@Pikalek Yeah, unfortunately, I'm not sure where is the chat on StackExchange priority list.
The 20 rep threshold is a bit annoying, but I understand why it's there.

@AlexandreVaillancourt You could start a meta post

guys, does anybody develop for windows?
I've encountered a very strange bug
program icon is not displayed on the taskbar when I alt-tab from the game window
which is weird
because alt-tab message is processed with ShowWindow function and value seems correct

How are you creating the window? IIRC (I haven't done much windows development without libraries that take care of that shit for me) you have to set the icon per window

hWnd = CreateWindowW(L"WindowClass", windowName.GetBuffer(), windowStyle,
                    windowPosX, windowPosY, (rect.right - rect.left), (rect.bottom - rect.top), NULL, NULL, hInstance, NULL);
Icon is actually shown in the taskbar, but only after second alt-tab!
seems like a weird windows bug...

user92578
3:07 PM
and how do you set the icon?

wcex.hIcon = (HICON)LoadImage(hInstance, MAKEINTRESOURCE(ID_ICON), IMAGE_ICON, 32, 32, 0);

user92578
I use SDL and have no issues with this so I'm looking at how they do this

user92578
They call SendMessage(hwnd, WM_SETICON, ICON_SMALL, (LPARAM) hicon);

user92578
And SendMessage(hwnd, WM_SETICON, ICON_BIG, (LPARAM) hicon); for task manager

3:20 PM
@nwp your solution wasn't sutible for my game
The slowest way is to take the center point of your model, which you say you have already, and measure to each and every vertex, saving the one with the maximum value. I assume there exist faster ways of doing this; but that's a place to start — blurry 9 mins ago
@nwp @blurry confirmed your solution
so thank you for your solution and I am off to implementing it in your game

Any idea how i could easily generate a random vector2 position within a certain range of a point ?

user92578
generate a distance and an angle

nwp
3:38 PM
@TheMaskedRebel Why not?

alright... hopefully this will work : double angle = random.nextDouble() * Math.PI * 2;
double radius = random.nextDouble() * 0.0005;
x = (float) (x + radius * Math.cos(angle));
y = (float) (y + radius * Math.sin(angle));

user92578
looks good

nwp
random.nextDouble() returns a double between 0 and 1 and not a random double, right?

@nwp Sorry now I see it is. @blurry just confermed it although it will need a lot of optimization

Well it works... but the new x and y positions are ... well... they are to close to the origin point.
@nwp Hmmm you are right. Either 0 or 1...

user92578
3:42 PM
increase the radius then

user92578
either 0 or 1?

user92578
well that won't work

nwp
Also that doesn't give you a uniform distribution of points. Points at the center are more likely.

I tried to translate the original c# code to java... was missing that part
What about this , for the radius Math.Sqrt(_random.NextDouble()) * _radius;

nwp
Are you just throwing random math functions at the problem until it looks good enough?

3:45 PM
Regarding the uniform distrubution
distribution *

nwp
@genaray That is pretty cool.

user92578
I wonder if it'd be better if you'd just pick a random X first

user92578
and then figure out what range of values Y can get, and then pick a random Y based on that

How do I get the center of my mesh

user92578
(min + max ) / 2

3:49 PM
@Tyyppi_77 Thanks, but my mesh is defined with a list of vertices

user92578
ho iaw iuy8 awg yuk

user92578
could you please bother to ask good questions?

user92578
you are wasting everyones time

@Tyyppi_77 Thats also a pretty good idea... maybe the movement would get more natural with this... currently my mobs are just... well its looking weierd

@blurry hello
welcome to this chat room
here you can talk about stuff you would talk about on the main site, but in a less professional way

user92578
4:00 PM
that's not a very good description of the chat room

see this FAQ.

Dammit... something isnt right with my rotation... Sometimes my mobs are facing their moving direction... sometimes not... strange

@genaray Do you use a matrix for your rotation

Not really... unity helps me a bit with it ^^

@genaray how do you find where your moving direction is

4:07 PM
It was logical mistake... i just did the rotation thing once... and when the mob executed a new moving order it just didnt rotated anymore >.<

A: How can I generate the smallest sphere from a mesh?

The Masked RebelHere is what I came up with after some feedback from @blurry, @nwp and @Typpi_77. private void create(TexturedModel model) { Vector3f center = Vector3f.add(model.getMax(), model.getMin(), null); center = new Vector3f(center.x / 2,center.y / 2,center.z / 2); this.center = center; ...

Does anyone know of some good easter eggs apart from this is fine.

@AlexandreVaillancourt maybe you can redirect the off-topic users so that in the reasons for closure you could say something like go to chat or something like that
I cant delete my posts

@TheMaskedRebel but if it's your first post or if the question has already been down voted too heavily, new users don't have enough rep to chat & require a special mod invite

@Pikalek You could say when you have at least 20 rep come to chat with your off-topic question

user92578
yeah you already posted that

@Tyyppi_77 sorry my keyboard kinda slipped

4:57 PM
@TheMaskedRebel Yes, I agree & we have done that in some instances. The problem is that while the rep barrier serves one function (reducing spam & improving the signal to noise ratio of chat) it also is a denial barrier to new users who are unfamiliar with the stack exchange model.

@TheMaskedRebel When closing the question, there is a link to the help center, and from the help center, there is a link to the chat. See here. Not all users have access to the chat, they are required to have 20 rep, so this would be misleading for about half of them...

@AlexandreVaillancourt You could omit the rep bit for heavily down voted posts and anonymous users and users with less than 20 rep.

To some extent that's on them. We do have help & intro material to guide new users. But if you're new & come here with a question & the community says "sorry your question isn't the right type due to [reasons] - we'll chat with you if you about it, but first you must edit some posts or post better questions." That's doesn't really square well with "be welcoming".
@TheMaskedRebel That's also problematic - I could script a bot that posts stupid questions which would rightfully be downvoted, gets invited to chat & then spams ad links.

does imugur support gif files

choosey parents prefer jif files

5:03 PM
@Pikalek Sorry, I meant that you could omit the whole chat thing

@TheMaskedRebel Mods are not the ones that impose the 20 rep limit, it is stackexchange.
And generally, users don't get downvoted for asking off topic questions, they get downvoted for bad, not googled, no effort questions.

@TheMaskedRebel yes, we could. The problem as I see it is that there's no ideal barrier. Or alternatively, everyone has a different definition of ideal.

@Pikalek I see a very clear barrier. We invite users with over 20 rep to our chat when we close their off topic posts and users with lower rep are reminded to post good posts. You could also allow lower rep users to have certain chat rooms like imported comments and things like that.
@Pikalek and then we could also allow low-rep users to have threads of their ow while rejecting access into the main site.
@Pikalek I think this will do better as a meta post.
@Pikalek I'm going but still free feel to ping me

1 hour later…
6:19 PM
Hello!

hey

@TheMaskedRebel 20 rep is generally considered very low: 2 upvotes on answers, 4 upvotes on a question, 10 constructive edits. Opening the gate completely would mean that chat is wide open to spammers, and we don't want that.
If you're to ask that they lower the rep barrier, you'll have to ask that on meta.stackexchange.com, not on the gamedev meta, as nothing much can be done here.
And be sure to be ready to be downvoted to the abyss before you post.

6:37 PM
can someone help me to design the framework for a card game i am working on?
just basic fundamental architecture

what kind of game

multiplayer poker game

what part of the framework are you having trouble with

im just unsure about everything
i guess currently I am working on the actual game
the game logic layer
and am unsure how to structure everything
everytime i think i have a good path, i go down it, and then it seems like im just doing something wrong

that's how you engineer software
you find the "wrong" parts and you figure out how to make them better

6:51 PM
right
thats what im tryign to do

3 hours later…
10:15 PM
@cubesnyc We really need a starting point to work from - otherwise it's like asking unpaid volunteers to design a whole game architecture from scratch. Is there a specific approach you've tried, but just can't seem to make work? Or a particular problem case you'd like some ideas about how to solve?

well i was just asking first because I didnt want to spam the chat
well ok here is a basic question
so right now i have a gamelogic interface that i intend to handle all the logic of the card game
the main method on it being update(IAction action), with IAction being an interface that defines a player action
there is also a method on it called SetGamePhase(IGamePhase gamephase) method in it that is responsible for settign the appropriate game phase
the gamephase class itself is responsible for verifying/changing the gamestate and actually houses the implementation of the Update(IAction action) method that is in the gamelogic class
that sounds right?

10:44 PM
Is it working for you? Then it's right. If it's not working, then we'll need you to tell us where it's breaking.

well ok i think i can make that work
one pain point i am running into though is when i am adding features i am finding myself sifting through all previous code adding the appropriate calls and what not
it feels lik ei am structuring it wrong
one pain point i am running into is figuring out how to properly handle the communication
how to request things from clients efficiently
and how to update the rest of the players of the current state
of course i can just litter gamephase update classes with single implementations but it seems awkward and incorrect
also please let me konw if im not making sense

The concerns make sense in general, but I think we'd need to see the particulars to be able to offer particular solutions.

what is the best way to show you?
git?

Try to make a simple pseudocode example. It doesn't have to reproduce all the complexity of your real system, just enough to illustrate, "When I want to implement feature X, I have to make changes to code in A and in B and in C..."
When we know what kinds of change you're trying to make, users here might be able to suggest ways to make that kind of change easier.

ok i will try

10:53 PM
Also, we've had a few previous questions about implementing card games, so you might get some inspirations from reading those Q&As

where can i look at those?
that would be really helpful
and hopefully its not my questions =)
