Q: Place objects on a 2d sprite

user97513I am creating a base for my game ( a circular island )..I will be doing it in Photoshop and import it to Unity as PNG. Now my question is, will I be able to add grids to it and place buildings on it like in RTS games or must my island be a 3d model to do so?

Q: Why does perspective change with uniformly changed sizes?

Henry StoneI have no clearer title for this, sorry. I am experimenting with scale in OpenGL and have encountered something strange. If I create an octahedron with each vertex 1 from the global center and place the camera at 0,0,1 I get hat I expect: The camera intersects with the corner at 0,0,1 and cuts a ...

I have reverted the behaviour of the new questions feed to what it was before. Thanks for voting! You can now un-ignore or un-hide @StackExchange if you feel like it :P

@Hjorthenify Just go to your profile and to "prefs"

Yay no more chat bloating because of the bot
If so many people voted to have the old behavior of the bot, who changed that option?
10:47
@Dh. I did, some users said it was nice to have them with the chat messages. So I decided to try it :p
I'm surprised no one voiced their opinion for the other option!
DH.
DH.
Seems like everyone who actually checks questions trough the chat didn't like it so much :P
11:15
@DH. yep!
Hey y'all, good morning
user92578
Hey
DH.
DH.
Morning
hey hey
11:23
I'm feeling great! I havent had this much passion for programming in ages. I worked on my game all day yesterday. Got to bed around 00:00 and jumped up at 6am and kept working :D
thats cool
Do people never get sick of pixel art? I am trying out some vector based designs for my game. (Not that I would be capable of making pixel art anyways...) but there is just sooo much pixelart
In the indie scene anyways
DH.
DH.
It's because it's a simple way to get decent graphics
Vectors were used a lot too in the Flash webgames era
Thats true. I used to really dislike vector art in most flash games. Odd how taste changes.
wohoo my rudimentary talent tree system is working
user92578
11:37
awesome
tree structures are fun
I checked out a game called Rucoy. Pretty annoyed all their art assets are stolen from games. And odd they dont get shut down for using those :/
havent done them since uni days
List<TreeNode> abilityList = abilityTree.BuildTreeAndGetRoots(abilityFactory.CreateAbilities(5)); Damn if OOP doesnt produce some sexy looking code sometimes
11:47
@OliverSchöning You need money to shut down a game...
:<
You can't just tell google play store that its your assets?
That.. scares me lol.. I don't want people taking my work..
Maybe you can, but they can defend themselves. Then you have to go to court. If the original assets come from the USA, but the thieves live in a country where the copyright laws are more lenient, or justice is a bit more lazy, they'll have a hard time shutting them down definitely and get back the money they've made on the copyright owner's back...
Ah okay .. I thought it was more like youtubes dmca stuff
12:04
Well there is probably something similar; just that it can be more complex for games..
user92578
12:45
user92578
I'm feeling super good about this intro rework, it's actually kinda starting to make sense now
Did you track how many hours you've put into this project?
user92578
nope
Any regrets of not having done so?
user92578
not really. I guess it might be cool to know but it also might be a little depressing
user92578
12:59
(it's probably quite a lot, maybe a really lot for a game like mine)
All those hours you could have spent getting high and drunk instead.... Sigh.
Well we have a fairly mature architecture here, and I still find that releasing a software takes an awfully long time.. ;P
And you had the added challenge of 1) using c++ and 2) writing most of the engine by yourself.
Maybe someone who used Unity could have spent much less time than you did to release the same software, but I guess that's a bit beside the point.
You're doing great :)
user92578
:)
13:40
@jgallant true dat
DH.
DH.
Every time I see an update of GunHero makes me think I need to stick with an idea and start a project
@Tyyppi_77 is that your artwork? Because it looks really really really good
DH.
DH.
Yeah he drew everything!
user92578
yeah that's all me, thanks!
Damn. That is awesome!
Pixelart done right imo. Really has a style
DH.
DH.
13:44
Yeah specially his scenario is really good
user92578
It's something that I've really learned as I've progressed with the game, the old stuff I drew looked awful
Gee.. now I get nervous about not using pixelart. Haha! But oh well. Can't really help it
Aw. Good to hear xD
user92578
user92578
that's from my prototype
yes, the player's jump is linear
Im really glad I just started doing my project instead of obsessing about design patterns and art. I just use "programmer art" at the moment hehe
Neat. Not ugly per se. But looks like something a non proffesional did. But the new stuff. Thats ready for steam
user92578
13:47
programmer art is great but at the start I found out that I personally feel more motivated working with "real" art.
user92578
the great trick I figured out was that if I make the characters smaller, so small that faces won't fit on them, I don't have to draw faces
Good idea
Yes. I am also scaling down stuff at the moment. Even tho it will be vector.
Behold! My masterpiece haha
user92578
that doesn't look terrible
I get what you are saying tho. When I made those little leaves and wall textures, bad as they are it made me happier
Thank you. I never did vector stuff before. I am using Gravit Designer now. Its really fun. But need my desktop pc for it because its using javascript haha
I mainly focus on the server side code at the moment. But whenever I feel am ready for the next iteration I update the client
14:11
@Tyyppi_77 Gotcha
14:42
I like the guy's face. Looks like he is unimpressed with the shitty world you created for him.
rofl!
He should smile soon. I add him some items to pick up
You should see how many security cams online have default passwords
Or printers.
I printed to random printers a few times.

Well good news is I finally found a job! Bad news is it will be spinning a sign. Beggars can't be choosers I suppose.
Are you done with school?
@Sie what's "spinning a sign"
Sie
Sie
A human billboard is someone who applies an advertisement on his or her person. Most commonly, this means holding or wearing a sign of some sort, but also may include wearing advertising as clothing or in extreme cases, having advertising tattooed on the body. Sign holders are known as human directionals in the advertising industry, or colloquially as sign walkers, sign wavers, sign twirlers or (in British territories) sandwich men. Frequently, they will spin or dance or wear costumes with the promotional sign in order to attract attention. == History == Human billboards have been used fo...
@AlexandreVaillancourt Still in school. It's $11/hour which is not bad considering minimum wage in FL is about $8.50. I'm guessing it'll just be a little weekend gig.
15:17
oh shit
but as you say, better than minimum wage.
I almost took one of these jobs. Was wearing a chicken suit, in Texas, in the summer. I'm sure I would have passed out.
ultimately I showed up and they weren't ready so the job service was pretty pissed off.
I was relieved.
@Sie Yeah. Nothing prevents you from keep on looking!
keeping on*
Sie
Sie
True but I mean really it'll be like maybe 12 hours if that a week but it'll be money and experience (lol) in the meantime.
DH.

15:44
Experience of being in street sweating with a sign
Sie
Sie
Yep.
This concept is fascinating, I mean... they have to sell at least 4 extra sandwiches per hour to make the job worthwhile.. I really wonder how effective that is...

1 hour later…

So how should I simulate water going through pipes? I was thinking maybe little balls that represent a certain amount of water.
@NaCl This is even worse github.com/…
there is no god
17:21
@Sie Why not use a similar method to what JGallant is using
Yup, I did link something about it, I just didn't search out the github link.
17:40
cellular automata is overkill for liquid going through a pipe
you can achieve the effect with a tile based approach
just draw the liquid inside the pipe, and then move it up the pipe at set intervals
17:53
But that is no fun
false. it is a miracle.
What's the difference?
a priest vs a magician
18:33
both do magic!
19:22
nobody likes muh ripper grill ;(
What can she do?
Is that 'which technology to use'?

Q: How to set up and use a development environment for games with graphics on a public computer?

PiomicronWe don't really have any IDEs or development environments with which we could develop games with graphics on school computers. We're on a network run by the school, and can't get technicians to install them, because they're a 'security nightmare' (even though quite a few students can easily circu...

19:44
@AlexandreVaillancourt Kinda... the question is actually "I want to code without being the owner of the computer"
DH.
DH.
But it fits in the "Too broad section", because he isn't saying which IDE he wants to use :D
Well he's not after an IDE, he's after a way to program games at school. I guess if we suggest a way to install a portable Eclipse, he'd be happy about it!
DH.
DH.
But would it fit GDSE purpose?
Yes and no; no because it could be asked over SO because it's a quite generic issue, and yes, because we've started to loosen the rule about "no generic questions" here; in this case, they want to make games, with graphics, so we have to take that into consideration...
Add explosions
Ah yes
Using noise functions as well?
Maybe? lol
@jgallant I need your infinite knowledge on noise
Also the perlin noise function I've found doesnt "cluster" as much as I'd like :/
20:48
What do you need
Any idea how I can "zoom" in my noise?
So that the "empty" areas become bigger
It looks too much like static noise atm to be fair
Yes.
Sample a smaller range
Like how small?
Adjust it based in what output you want.
Alright
20:53
What is your current code for sampling
Just divide the x, y values by a constant
Larger than 1 of course.
:P
Also using some glsl code I rewrote for unity
Figured it out I think
21:14
staarrrrrss
Staaaaars
Now to add colors...
Also this is all a shader as well
Soooo easy to implement
21:48
Wonder if I can use perlin for adding galatic clouds and galaxies
Probably need simplex noise or similar for that though.. Dont think perlin produce round enough objects
