Q: Do scientists consider coincidences informative?

Eue Wue7Let's take an extreme example. Let's say that a world ending, one in a billion year asteroid is expected on election day. Is there a point where scientists a priori take extreme coincidences as proof of some kind of higher power or do all coincidences that are problematic simply stay coincidences?

Someone upvoted this too. @StephanKolassa

@SextusEmpiricus Not the first time I've seen this happening, but I don't remember which question specifically; perhaps it was on another stackexchange website. I find it surprising too that bounties are not refunded automatically. The time required to improve a question, to get enough reopening votes, and to get relevant answers, may exceed the bounty expiration date.

@J-J-J: Well in this case the q. was edited & re-opened within hours, so all's well that ends well.
I'm not sure what I think the default outcome ought to be; but note that moderators can refund a bounty (while it's still on offer), so you can flag if you think someone's losing the rep. they've staked on a now-closed q. would be harsh.

I am very disappointed in your choice to frustrate my attempts to learn Causal Inference. Thank you for making an already difficult process more difficult. In keeping with your gatekeeping ways, I will post individual excerpts from the book, one-by-one, and have people respond to it. I'm sure I'll still do something wrong that won't fit your guidelines. — Eric VanDeGenachte 12 mins ago
Let me think what to say.

I see something on both sides here. I agree with 186534 that this kind of question isn't appropriate here. Closing it may look like "gatekeeping" -- indeed it is in one sense -- but it is over-reacting for the OP to regard it an attempt to frustrate their learning. All that said, where do we say that CV is not for seeking or hiring other people to work with or for the OP? If this is in the documentation somewhere, excellent; otherwise it should be.
