@Kodiologist "Most judges went to law school. " - that answers it. Albeit I wonder whether there are(were) any judges or for the matter lawyers who have(had) statistics as a major or minor.
People v. Collins has been written about extensively, including Lawrence Tribe in response to Fairley & Mosteller. It's one of the case studies in the Freedman, Pisani, Purves textbook.
BTW, there is some effort to teach stats in law schools nowadays, such as Jay Koehler's course at Northwestern.
