@dezso I HAVE SUBMITTED BE SURE TO VOTE!!! stackoverflow.com/election/10#post-49248579

@EvanCarroll You really want to be an SO mod? What have you done to deserve such punishment?

@PaulWhite I'll keep em' in line. CRACK WHIPS.
Those mods will bow to the will of the people!

I'm not sure SO mods have time to do anything except handle the unending queue of flags.

If elected, Donald Trump will no longer be president and Russia will pay for it.

I can see that getting support from some people. Good luck.
The nomination is a good read.

5:29 AM
I think one year I was like <10% away from winning

You're always winning, Evan.

I do it for you.

Evan becoming a mod would be more surprising than the clusterfuck that is Trump

8:21 AM
I guess there was/is some kind of crisis in US that many people saw/see Trump to be a response to. There doesn't appear to be anything of the sort on SO currently, so if it's an attempt to repeat history... well, someone once said something on the subject.

@AndriyM you could add the option SET CONCAT_NULL_YIELDS_NULL OFF which will then still yield a result even if the variable is NULL.
@AndriyM forget that.
Just saw this:
> In a future version of SQL Server CONCAT_NULL_YIELDS_NULL will always be ON and any applications that explicitly set the option to OFF will generate an error. Avoid using this feature in new development work, and plan to modify applications that currently use this feature.

Yes, I actually didn't even think of that option, but now that you've reminded me of it, I'm still not sure it should be mentioned.

@AndriyM @hot2use Seems relevant: dba.stackexchange.com/a/136212

8:36 AM
@hot2use By the way, regarding that fiddle link that Alexei suggested. At first I wanted to move the link to the bottom of the post but then realised it was just confusing. The editor used SQL Fiddle, which doesn't show the PRINT output. I adapted it for dbfiddle to use instead of Alexei's link but dbfiddle does show the result of the PRINT, which makes no sense in the context of what the OP was complaining.
@PaulWhite Agree, thanks.

I assume you intended those table columns to be nullable.
Personally I prefer to always specify NULL or NOT NULL since the default depends on local settings.

@PaulWhite Yes, we can well come up with an example that demonstrates the problem, but that wouldn't be OP's example.

Oh well I didn't actually read the OP :)

And thus the problem might not be exactly the one the OP is dealing with.
Even if similar

To be fair, they do say "random data".
Not exactly helpful to post an example that does not demonstrate the problem.
How unusual though.
Mind you, I'm not sure the example fiddle was added by the OP.

gbn
8:44 AM
Unsavoury choice of mods on SO these days

The example was added by the other answerer. And it didn't say "random data" originally, that was @hot2use's adjustment.

Huh

My guess is, as the answerer suggested using SELECT instead of PRINT, the idea was to demonstrate how PRINT produces no output.
I was actually about to reject it but was distracted by something, hadn't even closed my edit window by the time the suggestion was approved

@PaulWhite Dunno. I live walking distance from the centre of town so it wasn't a problem.
@gbn To paraphrase, you elect the mods you deserve.

I added "randomd data" because it wasn't defined in the OP and didn't want to remove the link as I thought it would be partialy relevant.

8:57 AM
Does SQLFiddle even display PRINT output normally? I know db<>fiddle does.

At first I want to VtC ...as unclear what you are asking.
Rollback to original question and post a comment that OP should add more details?

Ha, it was the OP who added the fiddle initially. The link was there in the very first revision of their post. Sorry @PaulWhite, my bad.
Alexei's may actually be the right answer if the OP is confused about what to expect from PRINT. Removing my comment for the time being.

Just noticed that too.
I'm currently in the review looking at the edits.

@AndriyM Another way that 'our' fiddle is superior then :)
3

For sure!

9:10 AM
removed my comment and redacted SQL Fiddle link text.

Cool. I think that's as good as it can be now thanks all.
Comments on Evan's mod nomination LOL

@PaulWhite Yes, they are quite amusing. But hey, that's Evan for you.

10:29 AM
Hmm the help center isn't terribly clear on the reward thing
is that something you configure @JackDouglas

@TomV on Patreon? Yes I think so though I haven't bothered. If you look at some other pages you'll see they have all sorts of 'incentives'…

@TomV It's not is it? I pledged $x and once completed it said there is no reward, which is fine by me.

@JackDouglas The site want's to offer me $1 as a "reward" which I don't want but can't deselect either
@PaulWhite I don't want a reward either but it keeps giving me one

@TomV Pretty sure it's just a UI thing. It showed me $1 reward all the way through, but once completed, there is no reward.

@PaulWhite Oh OK

10:34 AM
I agree it is confusing. I didn't care enough about $1 for it to stop me.

Thank you chaps :)

I found it quite self-explanatory.
> Rewards are Jack Douglas' thank you for being a passionate fan:
> $1.00+ per month
> No reward, I just want to support Jack Douglas.

btw, I have tweaked 2017 Linux to be more consistent with the Windows version, simply by using Windows for the internal client and driver. It seems to work OK, but please shout if I've broken something.

@hot2use And in the end it says "reward $1"
But all is well, in the profile overview it says $0
The whole site could use some UX love

10:58 AM
@hot2use It becomes confusing when you change the amount from $1
@JackDouglas Has there been much interest in adding SQL Server 2012?

@PaulWhite Would you find it useful?

@JackDouglas I'm not sure. There was a 2012-specific question yesterday where I answered and had to use 2014 in my db<>fiddle, but I don't know how common that is.
I can quite see how supporting 2008 and R2 is a bit pointless since they're pretty much out of support, or will be v soon.
It rather depends on the cost/complexity of adding 2012.

11:14 AM
It's not that hard if it runs on Server Core 2012R2, and I think it does
I've been trying and failing to install DB2 so it'll be nice to add something with a good chance of it working :)

> SQL Server 2012 is now supported on a Server Core installation of Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012, and Windows Server 2012 R2. Installing SQL Server 2012 is supported on the Server Core mode of the following editions of Windows Server:
@JackDouglas Doesn't DB2 come in like a million flavours?

only one is free!

Aha

No Db2 for z/OS on db<>fiddle then.

11:22 AM
Well, here's how to host it if you can get hold of it.
2

Ha ha ha I should have expected that
That wikipedia link has both Db2 and DB2. I always thought the latter was correct.

12:18 PM
> In mid-2017, IBM re-branded its DB2 and dashDB product offerings and amended their names to "Db2".
From the same link

@AndriyM Db2 looks lame

Kind of like Sql

Also, I send some Swiss marmite and 2 folk drop at a Pizza place in Salisbury... just saying

That's some pretty nasty marmite

Looks like a dog pooed on a toast

@gbn I may or may not have been visiting Salisbury with a case of chronic gastritis at that point.

gbn
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Like that time I might have taken my white Fiat Uno to Paris

Been a while since I visited Salisbury

1:36 PM
I saw the magna carta they have in the cathedral there, and got a great speech about it's history from a lady who worked there.
We went to see Stonehenge after that. There weren't any druids present at the time, though. Only tourists.

I've not ventured anywhere for ages. Been to Manchester a couple of times recently, but that's about it
I need to stop looking at expensive cars. I really want a BMW M3

I think my visit to Salisbury would have been about 10 years ago.
@Philᵀᴹ Last time I considered an expensive car I decided I'd rather have the £40k.

gbn
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells last centruy for me, to see Aunt+Cousins who live there
@Philᵀᴹ So you can accelerate to the speed limit quicker then some bloke in a Dacia?

It was a lovely car but it didn't have a spare wheel. The manufacturer's solution was to provide a hot line that you could call and they would send a little man out to change your tire.
For £40,000 I want a tire that I can change myself, dammit.

@gbn they're so pretty. And the biggest BMW garage in Europe just opened right near here

1:40 PM
@Philᵀᴹ Coworker of mine sold his for an alpina, it's a lot more civilized and just as fast

@Philᵀᴹ Trouble with owning BMWs is that folks will assume you're a merchant banker.

I've had expensive cars and cheap cars. Without exception, I have been happier with the cheaper ones.
Less worry for a start.

I've still got the Astra that I bought in 2006. It's going just fine.

I forget when my current car was built. Might be 1998.

Oh, and if anyone wants a laugh at my service from 2 weeks ago, it was very expensive & made me realise i hate pot holes. I didn't even realise "Tire egg" was a thing video.citnow.com/vxNpK43nLJ1

@Philᵀᴹ he got this exact one

@Philᵀᴹ Did you buy it from the Easter Bunny?
Also, you'd think BMW would be able to afford more than 512Kbps

@TomV an Alpina should have a paint like this: bmwe21.net/e21/alpina/b62.jpg

@dezso If that's a multi-colour flashing GIF, you're getting kicked

I may have to ask Jack for a ruling on that :)

is there a simple way than do a recursive CTE?

@AndyK no, that's the only way (if the depth is unknown)

@EvanCarroll cheers

3:33 PM
I believe all tail recursion can be translated to iteration. In fact that's what SQL Server does.

You could argue that.

Or, you know, to behave

real trolls never use the same account twice.

I knew it! Evan is not a troll.

@EvanCarroll Do you have any rockets? You might get SO round the table…

@PaulWhite did they turn blue? ;)

It does seem a bit odd that getting a suspension on any site - even a really, really small or new one - disqualifies one from running in an election anywhere on the SE network.
3
@ypercubeᵀᴹ Thank you for appreciating my unexplained joke!

@JackDouglas I really do need rockets.

@PaulWhite I agree, it sounds very odd.

I think Jeff was pushed out and now Shog9 runs the Democratic People's Republic of Stack Exchange.

Heh

4:08 PM
@PaulWhite it's only for a year. If you don't do some action to cause yourself to be suspended for at least a year, then you can try out for mod.
I see no problem with that.

@EvanCarroll I wonder if you were suspended from aksubuntu for similar comments

@MaxVernon Yeah I know, and all angles of the discussion already happened on meta.SE but even so.

@PaulWhite I've never been suspended, and still I'm not a mod. I'm not bitter... ;-)

On a more serious note: I expect everyone to Be Nice to Evan today. Be kind.

@ypercubeᵀᴹ I was suspended from Ask Ubuntu because one of their mods gave me an absurd answer that was wrong, and insulted the question, so I asked it on Unix.SE got the right answer and then I tried to show him why his answer was trash and he wasn't having it.
It was a question on packaging and he pretty much just left it at "that doesn't work because it doesn't work and don't ask 'why'?" and it was tremendously unhelpful.

4:11 PM
It is possible to argue that the suspension was not deserved. If successful, my understanding is you would be allowed to run.

@EvanCarroll I meant for comments that may not be but may sound offensive to some. Like your answer here that has "trash". I have found that people don't react nicely to insults, and mods are no exception. And sometimes what we say in all good manner may be taken as offensive.
But seriously, I have no idea about what happened in AskUbuntu, except for what you told us just now.

I suspect it may be the sarcastic/funny* sense of humour that can be misconstrued. The internets isn't the best medium for getting your point across sometimes.

tbh I can't really see why anyone would want to be a mod on SO.
Someone's got to do it I suppose.

@EvanCarroll in all seriousness, I've been amazed by how nice you have become here on dba.se since last year — you're funny and make good contributions. Thanks for making the effort to stay the right side of the line. As for SO, I don't care much myself but I'm sorry if you are genuinely upset by their treatment of you. FWIW I think they should simply say "we never want you as a mod, just in case you are the greatest troll the world has ever seen" rather than targetting you indirectly on meta.
