Q: Database Design for Forecasting Review

Jon HI am trying to learn more about Relational Databases and I figured there is no better way to learn then to actually do something. I decided to make a personal attempt to look at Personal Budget Accounting and Forecasting. I have done some research thus far and would like to get some insight on my...

@MDCCL @TomV @AndriyM FYI ^

4:57 AM
I installed Postgres and I am going to give that a try. I have had some experience with MsSQL in the past and not too much of a fan of MySQL. I updated and redacted a lot from the original question. I will try and post the other questions in the next few days I am sure there is no rush. I just wanted to say I really appreciate everyone's generosity and help!

@TomV monitoring software? Red-Gate SQL Monitor; Quest Spotlight on SQL Server; ...

@hot2use No, just some AX cursor whose execution plan should do a clustered index seek as the WHERE is on the unique clustered index column

2500 views and no votes. So weird.
(I'm not fishing for votes btw... just curious)
just got this in an email (asterisks are me):

> My first **ask** is to isolate which of these changes had a component on <server> that was affected.
> The second **ask** is to determine how that change is or isn’t affecting the performance on <server>.

I'd love to reply saying:

The above wording might be better worded like this:

> Please isolate which of these changes had a component on <server>, and determine how that change is or isn’t affecting the performance it.
.

Why is it so hard to write sentences that make sense?
damn, the edit time-out on chat messages is friggin' annoying.

@MaxVernon Looking at their home page (sorted by active) 80% of those questions have 0 votes

@TomV interesting. I shall get out and vote, but only for democratic questions. (shout out to all Americans voting today)

@MaxVernon Browsing that site I think most questions need down votes not up votes

lol. Most of the questions are not by superusers, presumably, so perhaps there is a lower standard there. And maybe that's why almost no-one votes there.

I gave you a thumbs up.
Windows Apps are a PITA.
Especially those that can't be deleted because they're built-in.
Microsoft: "Hip, hip?" - Well-versed user: swings left hook, followed by a right jab

@hot2use Windows Store apps are totally painful - that game I reference in my question is well over 100 GB to download, and needs to be downloaded on every computer where you want it installed - there is no way to download the installer, then install it where you want. And you can't even run "repair" on it to have it patch up any problems... On the other hand, most regular Windows apps work really well and can be uninstalled, reinstalled, or even repaired (gasp!).
I was able to download the package using an http sniffer, but the package is encrypted, requiring a special decryption key that is protected by the Windows Store app itself.
@hot2use thanks, by the way!

@jadarnel27 cool
I don't get the idea or the thought process behind: "All apps have to be installed for each Windows user".
That's just a waste of space.

totally

SSD space is cheap nowadays

cheapish. Still, why waste space.

Totally.

My NVMe laptop drive sure as hell cost too much to be wasting 100GB of it
On another note ManageEngine sucks

3:13 PM
I agree with that 100%. I bought a 1TB Samsung 850 SSD for storing that kind of thing, but I sure don't want 10% of it being wasted for each extra instance of the same game.

@TomV sounds like fun.

Doesn't have any products for DBAs (or did I miss that?)

@hot2use We switched to it for remote support for our customers
instead of a VM with a bunch of vpn's and an mRemote set up we now have to use an enterprise solution

@TomV Well then, you must be thrilled to bits and fully enjoying an enterprise solution experience?

@PaulWhite Thanks

Seen on the interwebs today - one dollar worth of bitcoin takes 17 million joules of energy to mine on average. That's roughly the explosive yield of 4kg of TNT.
An interesting statistic if it's correct.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells A mined block (12.5 BTC) is worth (~$6500 * 12.5) approximately $81,250 without transaction fees. If you assume average worldwide electricity costs $0.05 USD per Kilowatt Hour for mining, then you can only consume 1.625 MegaWattHrs per block before mining is not profitable. 1.625 MegaWattHr in joules is 5.850,000,000. Ergo, joules per dollar should be 5.850,000,000 / 81250 = 72,000. Of course, math is hard, so I may have done something wrong.
And if electricity is free, then this goes right out the window.
Even if electricity was $0.01 USD per kilowatt hour, it would still only be 360,000 joules per dollar.
I think many of the people promoting how expensive it is to mine bitcoin don't actually understand economics. Of course, I'm not talking about you... I'm talking about the incumbents who want bitcoin to fail.
Transaction fees might be trotted out as something I've left out, but if you look at any of the various bitcoin block explorers out there, you'll see blocks are currently being mined with around 0.22 BTC per block, which is ~$1430 USD.

Where can I sign up for these 5c kWh?

7:09 PM
@PaulWhite yah, it's more like 0.07 cents where I am. 5 would be fantastic. In California, it's upwards of 10 cents, apparently.
I purposely used a low rate because everyone talking about bitcoin tends to trot out how "Chinese miners get free electricity"
which is, of course, unreliable at best, and highly unlikely in my mind.
nothing is free.
Even if you have tons of pig shit to burn in a biomass power generator, you still have to buy and maintain the generator.

@ypercubeᵀᴹ really low quality question for the first one... perhaps. Just a guess. Seems @Shog9 killed it.
strange to have The Shog™ deleting stuff here.

I thought first that the user was killed but no. And they are different users, question posted years apart.
Deleted with 4 min difference
Some kind of clean up operation?

yah, The only thing that comes to mind is poor quality.

yes, both at minus score

@MaxVernon Part of the sql tag cleaning

@PaulWhite ahhh
I thought that was just deleting , not deleting entire questions?

Yeah but Shog has a separate process where he reviews stuff maybe a sample I don't know exactly. He did give me half a dozen or so to review manually

On phone at the moment but I can take a look later @ypercubeᵀᴹ
Electricity is more like 28c here

wow
not much of a problem with those dirty damn miners, then.

Need to convert that to us dollars but still

8:36 PM
$0.28 NZD is $0.25 CAD; so NZD and CAD are pretty similar. My electricity is $0.10 CAD.
where I live, our power is all generated from hydroelectric dams.

Q: When should I vote to delete a question?

OakMy question is simple - when should I cast delete votes? I've recently reached enough rep on one of the sites to be able to cast delete votes. I am not sure when a question is supposed to be deleted as opposed to just remain closed. What criteria should I use when deciding whether or not to cast...

(includes an answer by Shog)
@MaxVernon That's true for the south island of NZ as well. For interest compare en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electricity_sector_in_Canada#Generation with en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…
part of the value equation for closed questions is how many views they've had

@PaulWhite no worries

I tried to start a conversation on meta about deletion, but it doesn't seem to have generated much interest
I guess I find it odd that people are generally quite keen to vote to close, but not to delete

9:53 PM
@PaulWhite I think your assessment in that meta post is the most likely reason why people don't vote to delete.
> The simple reality is that people with the power to delete don't often encounter questions that ought to be deleted, when they are able to delete them

Q: Postgres SQL column in jsonb or SQL standard normalized table?

user3353167I'm implementing an app with a payment system, and I need to record transactions that are made through the app. Also I need to use some of the information about the transaction for rendering some KPIs. I have an implementation already in Postgres in which my table has 2 columns, an Id and transac...

such a terrible idea
@JonH hi
