Q: Burninate "schema"?

Evan CarrollThe schema is currently defined as, A schema of a database system is its structure described in a formal language supported by the database management system (DBMS) and** refers to the organization of data to create a blueprint of how a database will be constructed (divided into database tabl...

Q: Consolidating RDBMS-specific tags to one on functionality?

Evan CarrollIn my question, Does the SQL Standard mention trigger events on DDL (ALTER, CREATE, DROP)? I address the fact that many databases are addressing this need with ad-hoc functionality. Do we need one tag for each database for this?

A: Burninate "schema"?

hot2useI think the misusage of the tag schema stems from people not reading the tag's usage guidance or the (non-existant) tag wiki excerpt. There there is the ambiguity of the tag schema itself, because of the two possible meanings of schema. Database Schema This if the first explanation of the tag a...

Anyone actually using "SQL as a service" for real stuff?
That is, you manage only the databases and some (lesser) monkeys deal with the SQL Server patching, server level settings, security, etc?

@gbn As in SAAS in Azure or a 3rd party managed service offering?

11:55 AM
Nope

12:19 PM
@gbn More or less
The cloud version of Dynamics 365 uses Azure SQL Database or whatever it's called now
Why do you ask?

12:40 PM
@gbn our prod database is in Azure SQL Database

explains a great deal

it does, right?

We use Azure SQL DB's for a bunch of production stuff

12:57 PM
haha - i notice the "First Posts" review queue now is a bit more aggressive about "suggesting" you pick up some reviews :p

gbn
@George.Palacios 3rd party

@gbn Ahhh. That seems like an awkward setup.

@TomV replacement infrastructure partner due next year. We might only have db level access which means we can't run some "special" applications

@gbn I've only ever seen fully managed, including databases. Never seen excluding DB's - feels like a minefield in terms of performance analysis

gbn
I look forward explaining that one to management

1:08 PM
@gbn It depends on the competence level of the partner I suppose. We have a few situations like that where an infrastructure partner manages the server and we support the app and database
A few weeks ago we had an issue with tempdb filling up, but obviously I couldn't run whoisactive or anything. They cooperated and logged whoisactive to a table and send me the output so all was well
Had they been finger-pointing "not our problem but your app's" we would have never gotten anywhere

@TomV True. I'm just old and cynical

I'm preparing a new project where a "small" or "minimum" SQL server is required. I believe that SQL Server express could do the job. I was thinking to install Postgres instead, just to practice and learn more about it. But, the project include a windows service running in background, processing gathered data, transform it, and finally send processed data to a central SQL server, when available. Do you think NPGSQL is good enough to accomplish this task?

2:40 PM
Does anyone have a decent copy/paste for new users? With links to CoC etc
That can be put in a reply to new users* I should say

So you are saying a smoking clown with with a fire axe on his back and a police cap on the head hodling 6 packages with a cliboard lying on top demanding to enter the building to check on his elderly mother because he is worried that there is a gas leak would not work? I guess, I'll have to send everything back then. — problemofficer 24 hours ago

Where would be a good place to inquire about oracle ide recomendations?

7:16 PM
@JoeW softwarerecs. Shopping list is off topic on dba
Although if you can be more specific and it has a quick answer you might get lucky in this chat I dunno. Not many current oracle users here

Okay thanks
What I am mainly looking for is something that has the dba toolset of toad but is usable on mac os

@JoeW SQL Developer is sort of a Toad clone

I use that but the dba tools are no where near as good as toad so I end up loading a vm to use toad

for debugging PL/SQL, or something else?

That is windows only last I checked and I don't think it has the needed dba tools

7:23 PM
what, SQL Developer?
or PLSQL Developer?

oh i thought you meant plsql developer

I was just asking what you'll be using the ide for specifically

but sql developer is really lacking in the dba tools side

what do you miss especially?

The main thing I am looking for is a replacement for the dba tools such as dealing with tablespaces and session monitoring

7:26 PM
enterprise manager gives you some of that on the server side

I find it a lot harder to monitor long running sessions and locks in sqldeveloper then in toad

plenty of raw sql scripts for that on Google, Toad is just a pretty wrapper isn't it?
anyway if you really like Toad, I think you are stuck with running it in a VM

I would call it more than a pretty wrapper as it allows you to do it without having to know which script to run and you can easily see updates as they happen to various areas

but knowing which script to run is more portable :)

@TomV I'm no sure here, perhaps you could set the ConnectionTimeout in the ConnectionString or invalidate the whole page
