Dumb question, how do I undo a vote to close a question? This happened on SO but I imagine the mechanics are the same (if any such function exists).

You can vote to reopen after it gets voted closed. You get one open, and one close vote on each post.
If the devs see a problem they can clear the counts, but that's unlikely to happen normally

Ok, thanks. I doubt other people will vote to close it so I guess it's moot. Just feel bad having an invalid vote to close.

got a link? :p

Q: Drop table if exists in SQLCE

CarloI've looked all around the internet and I can't find a working solution? I know there's no IF in SQLCE, so I'm trying other different stuff, but no luck. Does anybody know a solution that does work? Thanks!

I voted to close because it looks pretty close to two other questions (which I referenced in my answer). But I realized that the OP doesn't want to put the logic in his app code (which is what the other questions were asking). I think he will have to put it in his app code regardless, but in retrospect I don't think the vote to close was fair.

I proposed a solution as a comment on yours, but I don't know what SQL CE allows. Can you take it from there and produce a better solution?

2:40 AM
Unfortunately no, dynamic SQL isn't allowed. Sometimes the answer is that you can't get there from here.

damnit
ah well, life goes on

yeah I made a joke about what SQL CE supports and what it doesn't. I really think it is a misnomer having "SQL Server" in the name. Sure some of the SQL dialect is similar but it really is a different product.

3:05 AM
Hi, What are the rules for chat? Can we ask questions here, or should we submit questions and then post them here?

This is general discussion - questions about the site are ok of course but this is not a place to ask your database question. Also you shouldn't submit questions here unless it goes unanswered for a long time or you have an issue or concern about the question, answers, comments, that kind of thing. At least that's how I understand it.

Thanks.

Post your question as a question on the site
and if you land up having a discussion with someone during the course of the question, then is the time to make a chat room and take it there
Making a question then going "hey guys look at my question" will get you roundly booed

Nice. Thanks for the guidance, Simon and Aaron.

Questions about the site itself should go to meta.dba.stackexchange.com

3:13 AM
Well I guess where questions about the site should go is not really that well-defined. For example, I've given up on meta as an approach to change functionality, so I'm just as likely to ask a question here (like why can't we undo a close vote?) then pose a new question on meta. YMMV.
I'm going to get answered much more promptly, I'm not going to get down-voted by all the people who think my question is dumb or that the request shouldn't be implemented, and I can carry on a conversation about it without getting chastised. :-)
When people don't want to talk about it anymore, they'll tell me to shut up.

Yeah. I get that. I was just wondering about "emergency" questions and such. I seem to have solved my own problem, but was afraid to do it ("disable" replication by removing articles from a subscription and then "enable" it by adding the articles back).

So the point of chat is just to rub elbows with some like minds?

Yep. If you want immediate help on SQL Server-related things, I suggest submitting a question and asking for help about it on twitter using the #sqlhelp hash tag and pointing folks at your link. This will maximize your potential audience, since not everyone here is constantly hitting refresh on the "newest questions" list 24x7, but twitter is pretty heavily monitored in all time zones.

inconceivable. F5 all day

3:28 AM
dba.se is slow-moving enough that you can pretty much get away with checking it once a day
well except today because we had a mass migration of questions, but anyway

But please don't use #sqlhelp too often on twitter.
2
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE

To point to a more elaborate question here? Why not?
Have the #sqlhelp gestapo been giving dba.se users a hard time about that?
I think it's way better than asking a 12-tweet question in 140 character chunks.
Plus it drives traffic here.

No, and I don't want them to start
I don't mind if each of us uses the tag once a day
but I don't want that hashtag to get flooded with our requests
don't hog the resource, as it were

Another facet of that point is not to tweet repeatedly to #sqlhelp for the same question

For general user population who are tweet-savvy (a small % of a relatively small number), who aren't asking 15 questions a day, I don't think it's a big deal. They are pretty funny about what they complain about and what they don't (e.g. promoted tweets are the devil but off-topic questions about active directory are ok).

3:33 AM
which I'd figure would fall under general "don't be an idiot" rules, but this is the internet we're talking about here

I don't mean every five minutes post to the tag saying "hey, did you look at my question yet?"
I answer on #sqlhelp from time to time and as an answered on that resource I welcome requests that point to a well-constructed question rather than the gibberish that typically results from cramming a question into 140 characters.
as an answere*r*
Not that being on dba.se or SO means it is not gibberish, of course. But it isn't forced that way due to size constraints.

Right, I think jcolebrand's point is that he doesn't want to flood the tag with a bunch of dba.se questions all at once

And all day every day
I don't want it to be common so they overlooks us

yeah I get it

Yeah. Flooding makes it become noise which then gets filtered either actively or passively.

3:43 AM
Well again, I wasn't suggesting that every single question should be accompanied with a post to #sqlhelp saying go look at my question. If you want immediate help on SQL Server-related things which should be a very small percentage of the daily questions (the subset of SQL Server questions asked by tweet-savvy folks who want immediate help and saw my suggestion here).

I didn't take that as your suggestion. But jcolebra's point is well taken nonetheless

I'm not going to go post my suggestion on the FAQ. Swasheck stated it was a bit of emergency and I was just suggesting a way to solve that with the best of both worlds.

Oh, I wasn't saying that to @AaronBertrand I was saying that as a general "I'm a mod I should mention this"
I figure anyone who has amassed 20k on SO is capable of using twitter properly
ok, night all

Night sir, I'm out too

4:35 AM
You know, when I read stuff like this it makes me kind of mad about the whole big hullaballoo that occurred the other night when I asked a question I knew the answer to and waited before posting that answer...
That link has meta.dba.se giving voted-up opinions about waiting before posting your own answer. Then, I see posts like this one about it being okay to ask for a specific answer to your question and I'm left kind of shaking my head...

Hello

2 hours later…
11:10 AM
Evening gents
... er wait. make that 'Morning gents'

gbn
Still wrong
no "Gents" here

I was hoping for the best

12:04 PM
@SimonRigharts You've come to the wrong place for that ...

JNK
1:00 PM
so i haven't seen any meta posts
thankfully

1:15 PM
@JNK Quite a bit of my stuff came across as well.

JNK
excellent
I'll wait a day or two to see if there's any backlash, and if not ill start flagging otherstoo

1:27 PM
@JNK Maybe just a few every day, and use your SO privs to tidy up the stuff before you move it. jcolebrand had some cogent stuff to say on that yesterday.

JNK
yeah ill clean them first

19 hours ago, by jcolebrand
So, when SO looks at any other site, they have to judge if they're going to be unfairly dictating direction on another site, especially with all the mods and users they have, they can't just chuck everything databasey over here (or programmer related to programmers)
From there.
There are a few specific cleaning up issues that cause a problem to the mods.

JNK
yep i heard him

I think a steady flow - I have a few more in my answers that could probably come across, but a trawl through various tags like 'sql-server', 'mysql', 'oracle' etc. would probably come up with quite a bit of good material.

JNK
answers to comments was an example

1:33 PM
I think that's his biggest problem.
How much rep do you need to do that?
Or is it a strictly 'mods only' function?

JNK
mods only
but you can flag them as not an answer
they are pretty quick to get on those since its cut and dry

1:51 PM
Would a question about if it's a good idea to use synonyms or not be on-topic for this site?
0
Q: Is it a good idea to use Synonyms to avoid creating a duplicate table?

RachelWe have 3 copies of the exact same database. All 3 databases have a Users table, and a User will always exist in all 3 databases with the exact same settings. Anytime we want to add or edit a User we have to update 3 databases. Would it be a better idea to delete the Users table from databases ...

gbn
@Rachel yes please

JNK
definitely On topic as far as I know
good best-practices question

gbn
@Rachel also, we're trying out our new room chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/2476/vote-to-ellipsis
for Qs about Qs

Alright, I posted on programmers since I was thinking it was related to software development, but thought afterwards it would be better on dba. Should I delete and re-post, or just vote to migrate?

gbn
@Rachel I'll flag it?

1:54 PM
@gbn sounds good, thanks :)

gbn
didded

I get the best of both worlds that way too, programmers crowd will see it and so will dba

Guess who just found another 2 recently built LUNs with 4kb blocks slaps forehead

@gbn As a side note, I liked the fact you discussed questions that need attention in here

@MarkStoreySmith Presumably intended to house database files?

1:58 PM
It kept the chat active and interesting :)

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells For the biggest thorn in my side. a 2.5tb LOB store

@MarkStoreySmith Mmmmmm..... beatings.

gbn
@Rachel we talk enough bollocks in here. I was trying to separate Q talk away
@MarkStoreySmith As in 4k NTFS clusters?

@gbn Oh yes
Not causing a problem with service (yet) but the weekend CHECKDB generated everyones favourite error log entry...
SQL Server has encountered 1 occurrence(s) of I/O requests taking longer than 15 seconds

@gbn So we've separated out the actual moderation discussions to keep the room clear for the bollocks.
:)

gbn
2:07 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Absolutely. Makes perfect sense that way

@gbn Well, it's good to see you've got your priorities straight.

mornin fellas

gbn
@DTest Howdo
@DTest and ladies today

Well I'll be...

Morning :)

2:22 PM
I just got the privilege to 'approve tag wiki edits'...I'm so thrilled.

gbn
@DTest Still pointless, mostly, because you need 5 upvotes in that tag to suggest them. Even on SO, messing with tags is a mod thing only.
I gave up

@gbn haha, yeah
got a long way to go for the 10k though

JNK
2:49 PM
im 1k away

2:59 PM
@gbn I thought you suggested some on dba.se ...
1
Q: ORA-20000: ORU-10027: buffer overflow, limit of 10000 bytes

eshI got that error when I tried to execute this query: select * from lc_history2 lc where lc.view_name <> 'LC Main' and lc.modifiedtime = (select max(modifiedtime) from lc_history2 l where lc.lc = l.lc) and lc.modifiedtime >= sysdate-30

Does this belong on Stack Overflow or here?

JNK
i think it's DBA appropriate
its about the database system itself
also im going through the unanswereds, jcole
theres a lot that have a good answer that just needs an upvote
some of those I am unable to vote on

gbn
@JNK post to new room any you think should be closed
@jcolebrand I'd say here.

@gbn that's what I'm thinking

JNK
@gbn I have been
I think some just need upvotes on the answers
which will make them no longer unanswered

gbn
@jcolebrand I was told to away with the vote count in that tags. chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/179?m=2800315#2800315

3:05 PM
If I don't see any table scans in my execution plan, only index scans, that means I'm only using covering indexes, right?

gbn
@BenBrocka No

Meaning I'm not searching outside of those indexes for anything?

gbn
Covering indexes remove "key lookups"

JNK
@BenBrocka uhm a clustered index scan is a table scan
do you have any clustered index scans?

gbn
that too, beat me to it

JNK
3:07 PM
bear in mind the clustered index is the table

@JNK true, I have one of those too, but I don't have any key lookups on the other table either, and it's not clustered and it's not clustered, should be a covering index though
Just trying to understand what it means for my query plans

gbn
Covering has a specific meaning: simple-talk.com/sql/learn-sql-server/…
using your index is better then not, subject to @JNK's observation
An index seek would be better in any event

JNK
If there's no clustered index you won't have a key lookup
you will have a ROW lookup
You understand what those are?

gbn
@JNK rid_lookup or row_lookup (without consulting MSDN)?

JNK
not sure which tbh
i don't use any heaps in my day to day
and if i do they are small enough that i dont look at exec plans for them
i know terminology is different in the exec plan though

3:13 PM
Both tables are clustered indexes in this case

JNK
OK I assumed one wasn't based on this:
and it's not clustered and it's not clustered,

I'm...not even sure what I meant to type there

JNK
me either :)

(By request, RE: earlier tag wiki discussion, anyone can suggest a tag wiki, but only > 20k can edit without suggested edit approval; tag synonyms on the other hand do require score > 5 in the given tag to be voted on, irrespective of rep)

JNK
does mrdenny come on the site any more?

3:15 PM
Oh, on one table I'm using the clustered index scan (which has a crazy high cost) and on the other I'm using an index seek (which I'm pretty sure is covering) and the index seek is way faster despite similar # of rows and columns.

will a covering index on only the columns I want be faster than the clustered index scan (which it sounds like is basically a full table scan)?

JNK
Last seen feb 9?
@BenBrocka yes, without having any more info

@TimStone thanks for the clarification. I was wondering why I could approve edits but not make edits! I missed the part that I can make edits but they still have to be approved!
Can I approve my own edits? :)

JNK
Is it faster to read a list of names or to scan a whole phonebook picking out just the names?
The phonebook is your clustered index, the list if your covering NC index

3:17 PM
@DTest You cannot ;)

@TimStone saves me the trouble of trying, thanks!

True, but the columns I want are the clustered key, I guess it doesn't have the extra columns though. But I'm not selecting those anyway

JNK
Ben you need to make it a Q with your table structure and query at this point
we are getting to indepth to make generalizations
The ability to make abstract judgements is inversely proportional to how much detail you need :)

@DTest Heheh, sure thing!

I'll just make the index and test, was just trying to figure out what was going on there

3:20 PM
@JNK only last Thursday. They were discussing him a bit last night, says he does a bit more but is in the background (not vocal)

JNK
@BenBrocka as a rule a NC index is faster than a clustered index if you are only fetching a few fields
there are always exceptions
you can do a lot of cool things with NC indexes too that will help specific queries like filtering and included fields and such

gbn
@JNK bear in mind that that a C index is covering anyway.

JNK
yeah I know
but its superwide and covering
did I tell you about the table I made that had two clustered indexes? :)

gbn
@BenBrocka only if you can make it a seek. If the NC index doesn't match the$ WHERE/JOIN (usually) clauses then it'll be a scan too
@JNK With indexed view?

JNK
no with indexes
second was CREATE INDEX ix_Cluster2 ON MyTable(IndexKey) INCLUDE(allthefields)
it was a workaround for shitty architecture

gbn
3:27 PM
@JNK ah yes, that'll do itz

JNK
we had a lot of joins on both keys (but never together)
and they were always SELECT *...

Oh select *, what fun
I did manage to remove the last of those from our PHP app, and most of the raw SQL...

mm, SELECT *...is there a way to avoid that using ORMs?
I'm enforcing a no SELECT * rule in my refactor, but the programmers hate me

@DTest I think we should use MongoDB instead

hadoop!

3:30 PM
@DTest I'm a programmer and no SELECT * has caused less problems. Now crap doesn't break if columns change

JNK
select * actually has a use in my environment unfortunately

Plus my framework constructs sweet SQL statements if you use their methods. So of course the last guy used concatenated string SQL statements instead

JNK
the users never know exactly what fields they need til they see them all
and we have hundreds of fields sometimes

Data warehousing stuff, right?

@JNK oi

JNK
3:32 PM
yeah
we do sort of manual data mining
to find overpayments in medical or retail invoicing data
so we need to show the auditors every fields we get from the client
makes it interesting since I can't use most of the best practices I see :)

gbn
@JNK some BI work at my place later this year. get yourself an EU passport and come over...

JNK
Don't know if there's time!
though my wife would probably die from excitement at the prospect

haha

gbn
@JNK I was about to suggest brides.ru or such
NSFW if it exists

Well there's my problem, the query was using a generated index where the "included columns" were the key fields and the random associated columns were the "key". So that's interesting

JNK
3:38 PM
The suggested indexes really are "special" in the worst possible way
All the ones I ever see are slight adjustments to existing indexes
but some of the folks here just add them without thinking

APparently so. It's like the included/key columns were deliberately and 100% switched

JNK
I actually have found MULTIPLE indexes called [Name of Index, Sysname]
which means they copied and pasted the suggested index text and ran it without modification at all

would you?

@JNK hah. I'm still surprised it even lets you do that...

gbn
@jcolebrand probably. If only I knww "what*

JNK
3:41 PM
@BenBrocka it does because it's enclosed in the square braces in the generated text

the sign of a poor programmer is laziness. the sign of a good programmer is efficiency. the sign of a great programmer is efficient laziness.
So every dba worth a salt knows why it's named that way, and it's unique to what it needs to be for, so why update it?

Good news is my proper index is building. Bad news is they take half an hour.

JNK
@jcolebrand You still need to look at those
and the naming still matters IMO, esp for indexes

I just love looking at a huge table and finding 15 indexes called tableindex1-tableindex15
Actually it's up to 20 on this table
I'm not joking. And I have no idea what any of them are or who made them.

@JNK does the naming matter, or the context and content?
If you can create a concise name that indicates the intent of the index, great, I'm all for that.

JNK
3:44 PM
@jcolebrand for maintainability the naming matters IMO.

well I did say efficient laziness ;-)
If there's only one index on the table, a default name is fine
being lazy but breaking maintainability is not efficient
that's just lazy

JNK
if theres only one index on the table, then you should be fired for using the suggested index DMV to make it

Maintainability!

JNK
I have a coworker who names all the indexes after himself
and just appends a number
so ABC1, ABC2, ABC3

gbn
@JNK Only me and skeet are allowed to do that
:-)

JNK
3:47 PM
I wonder if he would mind us calling him Skeeter

@JNK jesus h

JNK
Jesus H Skeeter?

JNK
i knew about that
but its the guys name

it is

JNK
3:51 PM
and Skeeter is a southern american colloquialism for Mosquito

and I thought you were blissfully unaware

JNK
and also a not uncommon nickname

Dave Chappelle introduced me to the word by way of his Lil Jon sketches

JNK
it was in a really popular lil jon song

Interesting, SSMS insists the index it suggested is "missing" but I get better performance with a different index. I'm betting if both existed it would use the slower index it suggests?

JNK
3:55 PM
yeah that happens sometimes
it's subject to the accuracy and completeness of the stats it has
that's why index hints exist

@NickChammas Note to self: Don't click any links posted to the room when on a client VPN

JNK
they are NORMALLY not good to use, but they are there for a reason

It's right in a way, my index does take a high % of the execution plan, but it is faster overall

JNK
I want to give you some very helpful advice
about those %s
1 - They are based on ESTIMATED COSTS
even in the ACTUAL exec plan
2 - They are unitless and time isn't a consideration
its a combination of IO, memory, and CPU
so the operation that is listed as 90% of the exec plan could actually be the fastest operation if it is using a ton of CPU but no IO
and that 5% operator that is all IO could actually be 90% of the time
exec plans are helpful but don't think of them as an actual guide for how long each operation takes or anything

I know. Actually, looking it over the estimated cost is less as well for my index, so I have no idea why it's suggesting something different.

JNK
3:58 PM
how are you getting actual cost?

I mean estimated

JNK
ok
you CAN look at page reads and time costs though
if you use SET STATISTICS IO ON and SET STATISTICS TIME ON
A lot of the suggested indexes are based on what it would use if it had it
not that it would necessarily be better

I meant that I compared the "actual" execution plans for both indexes and the estimated costs of both index seeks

JNK
there's an implied assumption that whatever the engine wants is best there
@jcolebrand nuke it from orbit please:
0
A: SLEEP_TASK Wait Type in SQL Server - What does it indicate?

Marios PhilippopoulosIt's hard to ignore the SLEEP_TASK wait type when it shows up as the last_wait_type in sys.dm_exec_requests for a poorly performing query. It's got to mean something in that case, question is "what?".

comment or oblivion?
I can't even work out how that's a reasonable comment

JNK
4:02 PM
its not
its just a garbage post
thats why I said nuke not gently migrate it to the comments section from orbit

lol, I just wanted to make sure

@gbn MartinC might be interested

@MarkStoreySmith don't give away my job offers

You just made yourself a very powerful enemy

4:12 PM
@JNK Doing you a favour mate. You'll never get your wife back from a sunshine island :)

JNK
we will stay, obviously
europe is like her lifelong fantasy

So for those who don't watch such things (I didn't) go check out the google doodle
props to google

@jcolebrand daww

JNK
that's pretty cool

@jcolebrand swish

4:16 PM
props to google specifically for the following: everyone deserves to be happy, material things do not make us happy.

Also, interesting, turns out SSMS's index is faster (it matches a where clause) but it introduces a sort when mixed with my other index.
@jcolebrand yeah, I thought that was sweet too

gbn
@MarkStoreySmith Non-EU though?

@gbn Wouldn't stop me. He's on linkedin if you want to run it by him.

gbn
@MarkStoreySmith one of your contacts?

Should be yes, Martin Cairns

gbn
4:22 PM
didn't knw last name

I should of course suggest CoTW as well but I'm determined to get Martin or Nigel BI monkeying for my client this year, so don't take em both!

gbn
@MarkStoreySmith Malta will be too cheap for COTW
I've broken a few employers at interviews here. Two admitted they won't pay what I suggested.
But... BI is big here anyway

JNK
hi matt

IIRC Martin has a mix of retail and finance background

gbn
@MarkStoreySmith connected on LinkedIn now, will ping

4:27 PM
ASOS last, banking/ib in the past

5:01 PM
@MarkStoreySmith FWIW I've worked for clients in insurance, public sector healthcare, courts system (sometimes referred to as CJIT here), property management, building supplies and various other public sector work.
@gbn I don't think @MarkStoreySmith's client has heard my rates yet either, although they're not anything special by B.I. standards.
:)

JNK
Is BI short for B az I llions?

@JNK Not really - fairly standard contract rates for a B.I. wonk in London.
I have yet to achieve any sort of brand recognition that I can leverage into negotiating anything above a market rate for a contractor.

JNK
That's probably a lot, since you measure your payments in pounds...

@JNK without opening the kimono too much, B.I. work in Insurance in London tends to go around the £400-550/day range, depending on the client and the role.
Banking goes a bit higher than that. More if you're into doing quantitative analysis. Project management often goes around £500-750/day for B.I. projects.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells How did you find public sector clients? I was constantly torn between the "they're paying me, good" versus "its my tax they're wasting, aargh"

5:07 PM
I dug out some DBA stats for London off jobserve.co.uk, and the serious DBA roles tended to go around £400-550/day
@MarkStoreySmith I used to work for an I.T. services firm in New Zealand that did work for the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Justice.

JNK
that's pretty good
but I'm also guessing you don't ever get consistent work

@JNK London does pay fairly good contract rates although living costs anywhere near London are pretty steep.

@JNK touch wood 6 years with no gaps at the moment

@JNK The longest I've been out of work was about 2-3 months. I'd say I've been out of work for about six months in total since 2004.
Usually I pick up something straight after the end of the last gig.

JNK
damn im in the wrong racket

5:10 PM
Next stint likely to be harder to find as the banks are dumping staff again

@MarkStoreySmith Probably - the demand is definitely softer than it was in 2008.
@JNK Well, come to London (tell your other half that it's 'Europe').

But, no point worrying about that until it happens

JNK
just bought a house so im stuck here for a bit
also she is 8+ months pregnant, not moving again anytime soon if i can avoid it

If you're under 32 (I think) you might be able to get a working holiday visa and go contracting for a couple of years. They're a bit hard on immigration these days so skilled migrant visas aren't so easy to get now.
@JNK Rent the house out. I made the mistake of selling mine before I came here. I don't think I should in hindsight. Compared to London prices carrying the mortgage would have been peanuts.
@JNK That's going to cramp your style a bit.

JNK
im in a more expensive housing mkt here
technically NYC greater metro area

What are the contract rates around New York?

JNK
not sure, I'm not contracting
I'm an entry-level analyst who reads and tries a lot :)

@JNK You're but one gig away from being an 'Experienced B.I. consultant' :)

JNK
yeah and we are starting a BI thing here now
but it's REALLY basic
essentially using SSRS to expose metadata we already collect internally to upper-ups

Well, DBAs are still in demand in London, and data analyst/report development roles are pretty common. They can even pay quite well on the contract market if you've got industry experience.
Is it you that's working for the health insurance outfit?

JNK
I'm working for a company that contracts with insurers

@JNK Bone up on the terminology and the industry and you might be able to break the chicken-and-egg problem getting into the industry in London.
A data analyst role can pull £350-400 a day on the contracting market in insurance in London. That might be out of date though, and it doesn't really help you much with a pregnant wife in tow.
The problem is getting your foot in the door. Once you've done that you're in. You've also got a fair slug of rep on Stackoverflow, so you can probably spin that a bit as well.

Off to watch the mighty Irons. Later chaps.

@MarkStoreySmith Ciao
