A: Turn off keyboard back-light Sony (VAIO SVF1521DCXW)

MewTry downloading the Vaio Control Center from SourceForge. To install it, run the following steps: Open a terminal cd ~/Downloads mkdir ~/.VCC mv vaio-control-center-0.1.tar.bz2 ~/.VCC cd ~/.VCC tar -xjvf vaio-control-center-0.1.tar.bz2 make -j12 chmod +x vaio-control-center ./vaio-control-cent...

Mew
If the above does not work, omit the -j12 on the make command.

Same error after step 7 with make -j12 or make: make: *** No rule to make target '/usr/share/qt/mkspecs/linux-g++-64/qmake.conf', needed by 'Makefile'. Stop.
I make a symbolic link to gt4 by ln -s qt4 qt and then try with your suggestion, now when I use make I get this error: "WARNING: TARGET is empty make: Nothing to be done for 'first'. "

Mew
@KasiyA Try forcing make. Use make -j12 -B

No' still same error.

Mew
@KasiyA Do you have the vaio-control-center file? If so, run that baby.

4:47 AM
Not running. this error: bash: ./vaio-control-center: No such file or directory

Mew
@KasiaY Try redownloading into a clean folder?
@KasiyA If the executable exists, try that before compiling. You may have to chmod it.

running with vaio-control-center I get this error vaio-control-center: command not found. with ./vaio-control-center I get this error.

Mew
@KasiyA Did you forget the ./ ?

Mew
Have you tried to do chmod it? Also, are you SURE you're in the right dir?

4:49 AM
yes I run chmod +x vaio-contol-center in right dir.

Mew
hmm.
and it shows "no file"?

actually yes. here is output of ls:

Mew
Have you tried the absolute path of the file yet?

compile Makefile run vaio-control-center vcc
COPYING moc_main_window.cpp ui_main_window.h vaio-control-center.pro

Mew
wait what??
./compile

4:53 AM
the content of `compile` file is "#!/bin/sh

make -j12"

Mew
Also, you can try following this answer: askubuntu.com/a/492455/208574
It might help.

It's also my question and it's not working also with that solution

Mew
hmmm.
this is an odd problem.
hang on. let me get a new download link

here is the output of trying above answer

user@user-pc:~$ cd /home/user/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1
user@user-pc:~/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1$ /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/qt4/bin/qmake -o Makefile vaio-control-center.pro
bash: /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/qt4/bin/qmake: No such file or directory

user@user-pc:~/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1$ /usr/share/qt4/bin/qmake -o Makefile vaio-control-center.prouser@user-pc:~/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1$ make
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.

Mew
umm.
just try qmake
But, what I think should be done is this:
Scrap the old file and re-download from here: sourceforge.net/projects/vaio-control-ce/files/latest/download

5:00 AM
with `qmake`

user@user-pc:~$ cd /home/user/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1
user@user-pc:~/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1$ /usr/share/qt4/bin/qmake -o Makefile vaio-control-center.pro
user@user-pc:~/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1$ qmake
WARNING: TARGET is empty

user@user-pc:~/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1$

Mew
qmake first, and then make
so, qmake -o Makefile vaio-control-center.pro followed by make
But if the file already exists, try just running it, after chmodding it.

qmake then make

user@user-pc:~/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1$ qmake
WARNING: TARGET is empty
user@user-pc:~/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1$ make
make: Nothing to be done for `first'.

Mew
yesh.
like i said, try re-downloading.

I download it again

user@user-pc:~/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1$ chmod +x vaio-control-center.pro
user@user-pc:~/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1$ chmod +x vaio-control-center
user@user-pc:~/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1$ ./vaio-control-center

./vaio-control-center.pro: line 5: TEMPLATE: command not found
./vaio-control-center.pro: line 6: TARGET: command not found

Mew
sudo chmod 777 vaio-control-center?

5:08 AM
user@user-pc:~/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1$ chmod 777 vaio-control-center
user@user-pc:~/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1$ ./vaio-control-center
bash: ./vaio-control-center: No such file or directory

Mew
try running it as sudo.
I don't think it's even readable.

user@user-pc:~/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1$ sudo chmod 777 vaio-control-center
[sudo] password for user:
user@user-pc:~/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1$ ./vaio-control-center
bash: ./vaio-control-center: No such file or directory
user@user-pc:~/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1$ sudo ./vaio-control-center
sudo: unable to execute ./vaio-control-center: No such file or directory
user@user-pc:~/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1$

Mew
what the...
can you do `ls' please?

user@user-pc:~/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1$ ls
compile Makefile run vaio-control-center vcc
COPYING moc_main_window.cpp ui_main_window.h vaio-control-center.pro

Mew
./vcc ?

5:13 AM
it's a folder :

user@user-pc:~$ cd /home/user/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1
user@user-pc:~/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1$ cd vcc
user@user-pc:~/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1/vcc$ ls
helpers.c helpers.h main_window.cpp main_window.hpp main_window.ui vaio-control-center.cpp
user@user-pc:~/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1/vcc$

Mew
hmm.
try make in the main dir.

user@user-pc:~$ cd /home/user/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1
user@user-pc:~/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1$ make
make: Nothing to be done for `first'.
user@user-pc:~/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1$

Mew
hmmm.
this is STRANGE.
try /home/user/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1/va <kbd>TAB</kbd>
feh. Try tabbing to autocomplete.
I think it might have a special character in it.

user@user-pc:~/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1$ validlocale

Mew
whaaat?
hmm.
Can you run file vaio-control-center and give me the output?

5:18 AM
I don't know but when I type va and then I hit <Tab>, it show

Mew
OH.
type ./va and hit tab
Also, are you 32bit or 64bit?

I'm 64 bit os and also 64bit arch
output of typing `./va` and hitting <tab> : ./vaio-control-center

Mew
yes!
hit enter on that puppy.

bash: ./vaio-control-center: No such file or directory

Mew
...
run file vaio-control-center please.

5:23 AM
From running in nautilus nothing happens and from terminal I get error:
bash: ./vaio-control-center: No such file or directory

Mew
seems so.
Again, can I have the output of file vaio-control-center please?

user@user-pc:~/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1$ vaio-control-center
vaio-control-center: command not found
user@user-pc:~/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1$

Mew
you forgot the file

Whawwt???

Mew
Run the command EXACTLY like this: file vaio-control-center

5:26 AM
Ok
user@user-pc:~/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1$ file vaio-control-center

user@user-pc:~/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1$ ./vaio-control-center
open_file: can't open /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/battery_charge_limiter: No such file or directory
user@user-pc:~/Downloads/vaio-control-center-0.1$

Mew
ah. PROGRESS :D
can you run ls /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop?

5:40 AM
user@user-pc:~$ ls /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop
battery_care_health battery_care_limiter driver modalias power subsystem touchpad uevent
user@user-pc:~$

Mew
oh geez.
one second please.
we at least made lots of progress.

thank you so much...

Mew
Still not there, but you can run the file.
While I am looking at the code, let me explain how we got that file to run.

ok. thanks

Mew
The system was looking for a library that was not existent.
When you symlinked, it made the file "exist"
thus, it worked. The "file not found" was referring to a LIBRARY, not the program.
Bash needs better error messages.
woo. i love finding code.
one second.

5:47 AM
I only see the screen... :D

Mew
uh-oh.
one second...
run this please: sudo rmmod -v sony-laptop; sudo modprobe -v sony-laptop kbd_backlight=0
i want to try something real fast

nothing happened

Mew
ls /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop again please?

battery_care_health battery_care_limiter driver modalias power subsystem touchpad uevent

Mew
still no change
odd.

5:54 AM
yes no change

Mew
what version kernel do you have?

3.13.0-34-generic

Mew
is there an update to that available?

it's latest

Mew
hm.
it appears like your kernel driver doesn't like detecting things or doing keyboard things.
try echo 0 > /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/kbd_backlight. I know the file doesn't exist. Just try it.

5:59 AM
bash: /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/kbd_backlight: No such file or directory

Mew
okay.
Umm, tee 1 /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/kbd_backlight
oops.

tee: /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/kbd_backlight: No such file or directory

and cursor blinking _

Mew
ctrl+c
The problem is that vaio-control-center needs the kbd_backlight file to work.
DING

user@user-pc:~$ tee 1 /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/kbd_backlight
tee: /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/kbd_backlight: No such file or directory
^C
user@user-pc:~$

Mew
Reboot and go into grub. Edit the Ubuntu boot entry and add sony_laptop.kbd_backlight=0 after the splash command in the Kernel line.
Post back results when done please.

6:03 AM
ok
nothing and nothing

Mew
aww.
try again with acpi=force.

acpi=force and sony_laptop.kbd_backlight=0 or just acpi=force?

Mew
just acpi force

ok

Mew
anything change?

6:16 AM
no

Mew
um, try sudo rmmod -v sony-laptop; sudo modprobe -v sony-laptop kbd_backlight=0 again

no out put no error

Mew
hmmm.

ooow wait:
this result is showed
insmod /lib/modules/3.13.0-34-generic/kernel/drivers/platform/x86/sony-laptop.ko kbd_backlight=0 kbd_backlight=1 kbd_backlight_timeout=0 kbd_backlight=0

Mew
hmmm.
that's interesting. Any change in backlight?

6:18 AM
no

Mew
ls /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/ please?
Also try the sudo variant of the above command.

user@user-pc:~$ ls /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/
battery_care_health battery_care_limiter driver modalias power subsystem touchpad uevent
user@user-pc:~$ sudo ls /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/

insmod /lib/modules/3.13.0-34-generic/kernel/drivers/platform/x86/sony-laptop.ko kbd_backlight=0 kbd_backlight=1 kbd_backlight_timeout=0

Mew
ooooo!
Can you paste the output of cat /etc/modprobe.d/options.conf?
we're getting close!

options sony_laptop kbd_backlight=0

Mew
that's it?

6:27 AM
Yes

Mew
Delete that line please.

ok

Mew
and run sudo rmmod -v sony-laptop; sudo modprobe -v sony-laptop again please.
Paste any output.

insmod /lib/modules/3.13.0-34-generic/kernel/drivers/platform/x86/sony-laptop.ko kbd_backlight=1 kbd_backlight_timeout=0

Mew
a-ha!
kbd_backlight=1
THAT IS WHAT IS KEEPING BACKLIGHT ON!

6:30 AM
How we can fix to turn off?

Mew
i'm looking it up

I tried with " sudo modprobe -v sony_laptop kbd_backlight=0" but still kbd_backlight=1 in this output

insmod /lib/modules/3.13.0-34-generic/kernel/drivers/platform/x86/sony-laptop.ko kbd_backlight=1 kbd_backlight_timeout=0 kbd_backlight=0

Mew
i know.
looking up data now.
It's NOT set in the kernel code itself.
There is some config file SOMEWHERE doing that.
Run ls /etc/modprobe.d please.
it'll be a long output

We are getting REALLY CLOSE.

6:38 AM
options sony-laptop kbd_backlight=1 kbd_backlight_timeout=0

Mew
YES
YESYESYESYESYES
Delete that line.

I have deleted And Nowwwwwwwww

Mew
One more: sudo rmmod -v sony-laptop; sudo modprobe -v sony-laptop

insmod /lib/modules/3.13.0-34-generic/kernel/drivers/platform/x86/sony-laptop.ko

Mew
BA-DOOM!
sudo rmmod -v sony-laptop; sudo modprobe -v sony-laptop kbd_backlight=0

6:41 AM
No change :(

Mew
what, really?

is not need to restart?

Mew
any output?

insmod /lib/modules/3.13.0-34-generic/kernel/drivers/platform/x86/sony-laptop.ko kbd_backlight=0

Mew

One more please.
cat /etc/modules | grep 'sony-laptop'

6:43 AM
no output

Mew
i updated the command
are you sure it was cat and not ls?
i made a typo. sorry.

Yes I am sure.

Mew
cat /etc/modules | grep sony-laptop

no output

Mew
cat /etc/modules?

6:45 AM
# /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time.

# This file contains the names of kernel modules that should be loaded
# at boot time, one per line. Lines beginning with "#" are ignored.
# Parameters can be specified after the module name.

lp
rtc

Mew
okay.
Run sudo update-initramfs -u followed by a reboot.
dont add any boot time parameters.

update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-3.13.0-34-generic
and now I need to reboot?

Mew
yes
ping me when you're back.

Sorry to late. no change. sony-laptop.conf file is empty!

Mew
okay. wonderful.
that is actually good.
Now, run sudo rmmod -v sony-laptop; sudo modprobe -v sony-laptop kbd_backlight=0 again.
We are soooo very close now.

6:56 AM
insmod /lib/modules/3.13.0-34-generic/kernel/drivers/platform/x86/sony-laptop.ko kbd_backlight=0

Mew
okay, no change?

no change.

Mew
well, we are making progress.
ummmm...
ls /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/

battery_care_health battery_care_limiter driver modalias power subsystem touchpad uevent

Mew
awe.
Okay. Try rebooting with acpi=force and running sudo rmmod -v sony-laptop; sudo modprobe -v sony-laptop kbd_backlight=0.

7:01 AM
exactly how can i reboot with acpi=force?

Mew
reboot, go into grub editor, and add acpi=force after the splash but before the '

output:

insmod /lib/modules/3.13.0-34-generic/kernel/drivers/platform/x86/sony-laptop.ko kbd_backlight=0
near 3 hours we are in chat. thank you for helping

Mew
no change in keyboard?

no

Mew
hmm.
Let's try rebooting but with BOTH sony_laptop.kbd_backlight=0 and acpi=force.

7:15 AM
like this GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi=force sony_laptop.kbd_backlight=0"
?

Mew
yes.

ok

Mew
that might be the magic bullet.

doesn't need to run sudo update-initramfs -u

Mew
nope.
BUT
you do need to run sudo update-grub

7:17 AM
ok I see you again after reboot

Mew
see you!

no change.

Mew
awe.
try running sudo rmmod -v sony-laptop; sudo modprobe -v sony-laptop kbd_backlight=0 again.
i can feel that we are getting close.

insmod /lib/modules/3.13.0-34-generic/kernel/drivers/platform/x86/sony-laptop.ko kbd_backlight=0 kbd_backlight=0
and no change

Mew
siigh
um. let's see here.
Is there still no /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/kbd_backlight file?

7:24 AM
Yes it's not exist.

Mew
meh.
Okay. Plan B
You're going to need duck tape.
Pull off each of the keys, and place duck tape under them.
and give me a second to find something else to try.
hmmm.
Want to try something else?

I don't understand you mean?

Mew
In `/etc/modules`, add this line:
`sony-laptop kbd_backlight 0`

and now

Mew
run sudo update-initramfs -u
Next, reboot.

7:29 AM
ok

Mew
anything?

nothing

Mew
awe.
does /sys/devices/platform/sony-laptop/kbd_backlight exist?

no

Mew
/me sighs
ohhhh.
Did you edit /etc/default/grub?

7:35 AM
a litile

Mew
With the acpi?
and the backlight command?

yes

Mew
can you remove both of them please?

'h

Mew
when done, sudo update-grub
and reboot please.

7:36 AM
ok

Mew
If this doesn't work, I have two more ideas.

then please say one of your two ideas
it's not working

Mew
idea one: It's a kernel bug.

and nex one

Mew
In which case, you need to report it.
I can help with that.
Idea two: Get duck tape. Pull off the keys and place some tape on the bottoms.

7:40 AM
can I fix that after reporting?

Mew
Unfortunately, not immediately.
You need to wait for the bug to be patched.
Another possible idea is that the BIOS just isn't allowing Ubuntu to control stuffs.

there is pach but I don't know how to pach it.

Mew
patch? Where?

just wait to give you a link

Mew
k.

7:43 AM
I am looking for that. please wait

Mew
which patch version should I use?

I don't know can you please see here code.google.com/p/vaio-f11-linux/wiki/VaioControlCenter

Mew
what kernel are you using again?

3.13.0-34-generic

Mew
ok. thanks
Okay.
I think the 3.2.2 patch should work for you.
oh man. you're gonna have a PROBLEM.
sorry.

7:51 AM
Why? what happened?

Mew
Two words: Custom Kernel
In other words, in order to get this thing working, you need to build your own kernel.

I am new in Ubuntu :(

Mew
Exactly.
I've been working with Ubuntu for 4-5 years, and building a custom kernel is still very hard.
I'm very sorry, but I don't think there's an easy solution for this.
What you SHOULD do is post the bug to Launchpad. Provide all the information you can, as well as this patch.

I just working 3 month with Ubuntu.

Mew
However, it might be easy too.
Your BIOS might just not be allowing you to change these settings.
If you want, I can guide you through the steps for creating a bug report.

7:56 AM
I have a dual boot with windows, in windows I have installed Vaio control center and it's work as well but I don't know why I can't find any solution. THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH

Mew
Well, here.
Let me guide you through bug reporting real fast.

Thank you. I don't know how can I thank you. thank you

Mew
First off, you want to start at this page: launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux
Click the "Report Bug" link on the right.
In the summary, describe the kernel module (in this case sony-laptop) and a BRIEF title for the problem.
In the main text, explain the bug quickly and efficiently. Also link these resources:
* The AskUbuntu question. This says everything that you did.
* This chat. I've walked you through debugging, and i'm sure the devs will be more than happy to have this info.
* Finally, the patch. This will give them a place to start.
It is important to know that bugs are NOT dealt with immediately. They are dealt in order of importance. If you can, make the bug sound like it's bad. It will get more attention. Don't over-exaggerate though.
Use this link for the chat: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/16735

thank you. I will report that.

Mew
I will also update my answer with the above information.
Once you reported the bug, leave a comment on my question so I can update it.

8:05 AM
Ok thank you again.

Mew
