So after we changed this room to be "improve or close" instead of "vote to close," why did the activity drop way off?
Anyway, OT (home use)

Q: Windows7 with Apache2 Server set up Perl Path

d.mc2I am currently trying to run a perl script test.pl on my windows Apache Server. use test_mod.pm. It is located in c:/mod/ and I have this in my PATH and Perl5Lib System Variables. I have also duplicated my PATH and Perl5Lib System Vars as User Variables. However running this script on my Apa...

Q: What's the easiest way to do a FULL backup/restore in Windows 7?

notfedI want to be able to backup my Windows 7 system, then restore it. When I restore my backup, I want to do a FULL restore--that is, if I created files on my desktop or installed software after the backup, they should be deleted when I restore my backup. So far I've tried the built-in Windows back...

Q: Why are switching loops(layer 2) worse than routing loops?

gsinhaWhy are switching loops(loops with bridges) worse than routing loops(loops with routers)?

No, probably not homework, just pointless questions:

Q: Will RSTP BPDUs be encapsulated in tagged Ethernet frames?

gsinhaRSTP(Rapid Spanning Tree) is configured on a bridge. All ports of this bridge are "trunk" ports and are part of vlan “x”. Will the BPDUs sent out of this bridge be tagged?

Bobb will probably go crazy, but this question of his is also too localized - the problem turned out to be a misunderstanding between him and colo as to which NIC was connected.

Q: Cant access Dell BMC IPMI Over IP

BobbI have Dell R210 with iDRAC BMC (new name for old BMC). Which is on-board feature with shared NIC (I believe). Server is on colocation and I didnt set it up before sent there... So I asked for the remote hands to setup IPMI Over IP. They enabled it, set the IP and everything. The IP is different ...

Q: Boot Custom ISO on Remote Dedicated Server

Joshua McGinnisMy telephony service has given me an ISO so that I can host my own PBX server. Say I have a dedicated server that I can SSH into at Rackspace. How would I get this dedicated box to load my ISO and boot with it so that it can install the image and software, etc? Additional context: We're using...

@Chopper3 BEat me to it!

Disagreed. At its base, the question is asking "How do I load boot an ISO remotely." I'd call that sysadmin-related. The rest of the question is just fluff. Amusing fluff that makes us think the failure will be epic, but still fluff.

@Hyppy I'd call that "Day 1 of moving from janitor to help desk ticket jockey" and as such it falls into "not enough research performed"

8:00 PM
Then someone should edit the question to be "How do I load boot an ISO remotely?"

but it's not just that, it's 'how do I boot an ISO very specifically on a rackspace server - that's liable to change based on their service offering, both today and in the future

While we avoid "Just Google it" answers, if a question really does have an answer that can be found in a short amount of time on Google, it's not fit for the site as per the FAQ.
But we've never really seemed to follow the FAQ too well. =)

The general answer to the ISO question is valuable though - you need PXE or remote console with virtual media. Whether or not rackspace offers that doesn't need to be relevant
And if someone is just starting to admin servers, he might not know where to start looking on his own

but you'd start by asking the vendor right, or googling, or...anything before getting to us wouldn't you?

I have no idea how much hand-holding Rackspace offers, so I don't know. For google - this is where it starts to get pretty subjective. I've worked with Linux server admins who know very little beyond Linux and home PC hardware. Not the case with old-school Unix guys at all, of course
So, if all he knows is he can SSH into a remote server, and doesn't know anything about remote out-of-band management, where would he start?

@mfinni At the least it deserves a downvote, since downvotes signify "This question does not show any research effort."

Possibly, possibly.

His question shows he knows enough to type the words "boot" "iso" and "remote server" in a sentence, so I'm not inclined to have much sympathy.

Let it be known that I have no problem with people asking questions like that, or myself giving answers like that. It's just that it seems ServerFault as a resource is being abused a bit more lately.
So while questions like that are inherently good, it doesn't mean they're fit for every community. Then again, perhaps things are changing here. The FAQ doesn't scope the site to "For SysAdmins by SysAdmins" anymore like I thought it did. It broadly states that it's for "Information Technology Professionals" which is open for interpretation.
Meh, I've already spent too much time thinking about this.
We need more stars in here.
