i generally don't like alcohol & the smell of beer. Do you think I should try recipes that use alcoholic drinks?

Beer-soaked steak? Fondue? I'm just not sure if the flavors from the alcoholic drinks would just ruin it for me. The alcohol tends to vaporize off but I'm not sure about the rest.

@JohnZhau There is no way to know without trying it.

disliking a flavor alone increases the chance that you won't like it in combination either, but it is far from certain that this will happen

and what you are talking about is not a simple combination, it is quite a bit of a change in taste during cooking.

so, prediction is quite impossible - you have to try it a few times (if you don't like it the first time, this is also not a sure sign that you will never like it - the exposure effect is quite strong in taste) and see.

How does wine compare to beer in taste?

@JohnZhau I have one for you to try if you like Bratwurst. I actively dislike the flavor of beer, but I love brats braised in beer until it evaporates then browned in the oil left after the beer evaporates.

Beer-braised brats are good @Jolenealaska, but some people boil them in beer, which just ruins them. I like beer, I like brats, I like brats with beer, but I draw the line at boiling them in it!

@JohnZhau there are a thousand types of alcohol based drinks, saying you won't like any of them is unrealistic. There's chocolate and coffee liquers, which barely taste of alcohol at all. Beer is a completely different flavor from wine, which is completely different from a pina colada, which is made from rum, pineapple juice and coconut. I can mix a cocktail that you'd swear was pure fruit juice but would put you on the floor!

Cooking with alcohol is no different, you can burn rum off in a flambe, or add wine to a tomato sauce with completely different effects on taste.
