5:45 PM
So, quick question. I finally purchased my kitchen scale (per earlier discussion), but I not that curiously, a running overhead fan would make the weighing scale fluctuate between 0 and 4 grams. I suppose it's not that surprising. Moving air strikes the scale surface with some force, which I suppose the scale can't distinguish from the force of gravity from an object placed on it.
Still, it's a curious effect.
@derobert Have you seen this?
I initially thought the weighing scale was defective, till I realised what was probably causing it. Which I verified by switching the fan off.
But I haven't found any mention of this on the site.

6:24 PM
@FaheemMitha never seen it, but don't have a fan blowing on mine
BTW on vacation spotty cell Co era

@derobert Co era?
@derobert I couldn't find any mention of this on the net, for some reason.

@FaheemMitha I’m not surprised. Finer scales (fractions of grams) come with transparent covers to protect the goods from drafts.

It's an overhead fan. Mounted on an overhead beam. Not exactly a ceiling fan. The kitchen has a high ceiling, and the beam in question is about halfway down.

@FaheemMitha probably “coverage” maimed by autocorrect on a mobile.

@Stephie Not this one, though. I'm also not sure what could be done to stop this happening.
@Stephie Yes, that sounds likely.

6:29 PM
@FaheemMitha turn off the fan when you really need that kind of precision? In many recipes, a few grams won’t make or break the results.

BTW, I hate autocorrect. Especially how they change it without asking. I wonder if one could change that default.
@Stephie Oh, it's not a real problem. Just a curiosity. I've never seen a scale before sensitive enough to have that issue.
I mentioned the scale in our earlier discussions. It's

@FaheemMitha coverage

It's sturdier in person than it looks in the pictures, fortunately.
My cook hasn't warmed up to it, unfortunately.

Keep losing cell connection, riding in car

@derobert Where are you? Darkest Africa?
@Stephie I just got a blood test (glycated haemoglobin) that says I'm pre-diabetic. So I might have to go on a diet. I expect the new kitchen scale would come in handy for that.
And get more exercise, probably.
Trying to keep ones weight down is very hard work, though. Unless you are destitute, I suppose.

6:36 PM
@FaheemMitha no need to. We have places with patchy coverage and we’re just half an hour away from one of the economically strongest areas in Germany.

@Stephie I was just kidding. The image of Anthony trekking through Africa with his cell is amusing.

@FaheemMitha afaik, exercise will do your blood sugar levels more good than just losing weight alone.

@Stephie Oh. Well, I'll keep it in mind. I do live a very sedentary life. It's got worse recently. I used to go to the gym. Tried the local dancing scene. Neither work very well. The gym is boring and the dance scene is dysfunctional.

But I’m also on the chubby side, so I agree with the weight control - sigh.

The quality of doctors here isn't great, so I should probably ask around.

6:39 PM
Otoh, While I didn’t lose weight, Zumba (3 times per week) greatly improved, well, everything?

@Stephie I don't actually think of myself as fat, but I'm definitely overweight. I'm fairly large, so it doesn't show up that much. But I can certainly believe that plus not moving around much could cause problems in the long term.
@Stephie Zumba? Oh, the dance thing.
What's everything?

@FaheemMitha yep.

Dance is pretty good for the health. It's rare to see an overweight dancer. And usually the professionals are glowing with health. Unless they do ballet. Which is not really dance - it's a sophisticated form of torture.
If I recall correctly, your kids dance.

@FaheemMitha stamina, flexibility, muscle growth, stress reduction... I bet my blood tests would be also better, if I’d bother to have them checked.

I was just looking at bathroom weighing scales.

6:41 PM
@FaheemMitha one of them, yes.

@Stephie So the zumba is current, then?

@FaheemMitha have been doing it for almost 2 years.

Hmm, I'm seeing some local hits for Zumba here. But it doesn't look like social dance. More some form of aerobics. I wonder if I could keep up - probably not.
@Stephie Ah.
One of them is very close to me - Bombay Gym.

@FaheemMitha in a very wide sense.... perhaps. Every group is different, and different trainers will be more or less intense.

Of course, the listed classes may no longer be running.
People aren't great at keeping to to date here.

6:51 PM
And it’s up to you how intense you do it - you can start “as good as you can”, you won’t be able to do the whole choreography right from the start. Every beginner goes through a “WTF? Huh? How can I move my arms and legs at the same time? And what’s he doing now?” - phase. Me included, and I danced on a semi-professional level for years.

@Stephie How did you come to pick Zumba? Just a desire to stay fit?

@FaheemMitha that was definetively part of the decision. Plus, I’m the laziest person in the world when it comes to sports. With one exception: turn up the music and I won’t stop. And it was the closest to “regular dancing (which I still miss) - at least that’s what I thought. I was hooked after the first one or two times.
And what I like best (apart from the music, the “dancing”, etc.) is that I can’t keep thinking about whatever is going on at home, at work, with the kids..., because then I trip over my own feet and mess up everything. So I have to be in the moment and get rid of the “my mind running in circles” bit. The complete opposite from when I go running or so. Some people can let their minds go blank while jogging, mine starts to race.

7:12 PM
@Stephie I see. Why didn't you stay with the "regular" dancing? Assuming that's an option where you are.
@Stephie Yes, i'm really bad at staying focused too.
Hi @Cindy. How's it going?

@FaheemMitha because regular dancing requires a partner? And somehow that didn’t appeal to hubby too much.

7:33 PM
@Stephie Oh.

And Zumba burns more calories ;-)
