00:00 - 18:0019:00 - 00:00

12:12 AM
From my parents? About 30 minutes by train, ca. 25 km.
You?
@Simchona: Oh no!!
Look who's back from suspension.

Jay
Who got suspended?
It takes 2 hour to get to Harrisburg and then another hour to drive to my parents house. By sister came to pick me up

Oh, nice.
That is quite a bit farther. It takes 25 minutes from my house to my parents' by car (if no traffic).
I want to make this!

Jay
12:31 AM
What is that
I can't see clearly in my phone

A home-made hovercraft!
And it seems easy to make.

Jay
1:11 AM
Wish that's awesome! Make me one too :)
Woah*

1:24 AM
I wonder how well that would float on waves.
Low waves.
On still water, it is supposed to work fine.

3 hours later…
4:20 AM
@dero @rum post submitted for review
feel free to edit grammar and such

1 hour later…
5:26 AM
@rfusca Any chance we could get a little more detail on the actual pressure cooker mod? That section seems a little short, compared to the section on the advantages of steam (which, assumably, anyone willing to mod a pressure cooker already knows) Anyway, I'm off to bed, I've just quickly read it once.
@rumtscho you probably want to see my comment chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/5012191#5012191 too

@derobert sure, i mean, there's just not really all that much to the mod

2 hours later…
7:20 AM
@derobert added a bit

4 hours later…
11:13 AM
@derobert I have lots to do at work today, will be able to look into stuff at 16:00 UTC +- an hour. Go through the publishing process without me, I will chime in when I can, and if it proves too late for my suggestions to be incorporated, so be it. I trust you two to do a good post.

11:51 AM
good luck @ work today then, @rumtscho :)

3 hours later…
2:52 PM
@rumtscho LOL, its already almost 1500UTC, and only now am I here...
But at least I voted :-P
Naturally, by selecting candidates without badges.
So, I guess I voted for no one. Oops.

hey @dero
i tried to add a bit

I'm looking at it now
@rfusca btw, is this a gas or electric oven? Wonder if it matters.

@derobert voted on what?

@derobert its electric, i honestly dont' know

@Mien stackoverflow moderator election

2:57 PM
I hardly use SO

@rfusca I haven't been to the hardware store to check, but is there only one type of steel hot water hose? Seems like they'd have rubber in them, which wouldn't like the 500F oven...

Oh I'm 42 rep short to vote :(

@rum btw, try the site on your phone again sometime. they report they fixed the issue with not seeing the buttons cuz of no hovering on touchscreen devices
@derobert you're not putting it in the oven, just at the exhaust - its not 500

Ok, I guess its an electric-oven only thing then, my gas oven has an exhaust, but its quite hot.
... more or less at oven temperature
@rfusca the site warns me you're currently editing, I assume its mistaken?

@derobert i think i still had a page open

3:10 PM
I think we should definitely take a post of someone using an industrial air compressor to open coconuts, provided they wear safety goggles and a lab coat. :-P

@derobert for sure

Also, I think you're understating a little the safety concerns. I'm going to change that part a little (also, I'm not sure we have enough readers to start calling them morons yet)
—at least, not to their faces.

So, I'm ready
will go read the post now
Sorry for not being online yesterday evening

@derobert ooooook
just don't make it seem like a bomb
its really quite safe
you do have to be an idiot to screw it up

I went on a swing and gave myself seasickness. I guess it is because I'm not completely accustomed to the glasses yet, and tried to read stuff on my phone screen while swinging.

3:19 PM
No, not like a bomb. Just something that'll give you a nasty burn if you're near it when that safety valve goes off

Went home with a headache and dry heaving and collapsed into bed.

@derobert sure

@rfusca Or maybe just clumsy?

@rumtscho no more than normally operating a stove/oven in that regard

also, the problem with idiots is that they don't know that they are idiots - so they assume that they can do it safely.

3:20 PM
@rfusca I'll let you see it in a few minutes, almost done editing

@derobert k

@derobert where are you editing, online or in a file?

@rumtscho online

@derobert should I wait until you are done?

@rumtscho yes, it'll only be a few minutes more

3:22 PM
alright, I am waiting in suspense.

@rumtscho Everyone is an idiot sometimes.

That's the link straight to the diff.
@rfusca hopefully cooking.blogoverflow.com/wp-admin/… works for you
@rfusca @rumtscho I'm done.

I like the baby unicorns.

nice - I will read it now

3:27 PM
You can only eat them as babies before the horns get too hard and sharp.

@Sobachatina yeah, if you wait longer, you have to do all that work with a bone saw to remove the horn

@derobert i'm fine with that

So, we just need @rumtscho to recover from her dry heaving, so she can edit.

@derobert this was yesterday evening
the last of headache went away around 11 AM today

And to think, I wasn't even aware robots could dry heave.

3:29 PM
so I feel reasonably well

@derobert Robots can only dry heave.

@derobert really? My scooba seems to be able to do something on these lines.
At least it leaves hairballs here and there - worse than a cat

Nor, honestly, that swings could cause such a thing. You sure you didn't experience a visit from our friend B. cereus ? Or one of its buddies?

If a robot heaves enough to be leaking lubricant then it isn't heaving anymore- it's hemorrhaging.
@derobert Swings and a new glasses prescription.

Why are there two to three spaces between sentences?
@derobert I haven't had it happen before on a swing
I think it is the glasses and trying to read tiny text through them while swinging.

3:32 PM
@rumtscho I don't think those show in the rendered output, do they? I guess because that's how @rfusca typed it :-P

hmm don't know

@derobert They show. I am reading the rendered one.

@rumtscho Guess that needs fixing, then

old habits. taught to double space between sentences in grade school

@rfusca you learned typing in grade school?

3:33 PM
yes

"take up residence in the open crumb. " ... wow, that double space showed too
HTML normally hides double spaces. WTF have they done in the stylesheet, I wonder.

@rfusca I was taught the same thing- but never made it a habit.

I wonder how European ovens function
I have never seen a vent on an oven

@rumtscho Only gas ovens need them.

That's because you have a toaster oven :-P

3:35 PM
lol

@Sobachatina The electrics I've seen have them. At least the non-toaster ones.

@rfusca Shortly after, expect steam to start pouring out of any leak out of the oven: that would have been an awesome pic for the top of the article
@derobert I have seen ovens beside my own

i've never not seen a vent

@Sobachatina the mod is done on the vent of an electric oven.

sometimes they're just hidden

3:37 PM
Where can they be hidden, when the oven is built in together with the cabinets and there is a counter above it?

@rumtscho eh, my oven/range isn't very nice looking. no pictures of it on the blog :)

@derobert That's true, I suppose my electric has a vent but my old gas oven poured heat out of it, my electric doesn't.

in the  open crumb. ... ah, so Wordpress turned the second space into a &nbsp to make sure it shows. How nice of it.

Why would an electric need a vent? No combustion going on.

@Sobachatina Well, steam has to escape somewhere.
Also all the pressure from the air heating.

3:38 PM
@rfusca we are not doing oven ads or "Home and garden" shots, we are doing fun geeky oven mods. People care about the billowing clouds of steam, not about the looks of your oven.

And the vacuum when it cools down again

@rumtscho If it is old and beat up it would make a better picture anyway.
Unless it is caked with that nasty, sticky, yellow, slime that always accumulates on the tops of microwaves above the stove.
Yuk.

@rumtscho I can quickly fix all the double-spacing after you're done editing.

@Sobachatina exactly. If we showed a mod on a sleek new piece of hardware worth $2000, they would cry "trickery"
what was the correct syntax for padding?
The second picture is too close to the text
and the first would eb better off with padding than with a paragraph too, I think

click the image, then you can go to properties and use the gui :-P

3:43 PM
the gui only gives me a line for CSS
I have to write it per hand in there

otherwise, its margin-left, -right, -top, -bottom, or padding- depending on the effect you want

but I found it - I had forgotten the semicolon
It doesn't work :(
I copied it from the other post
padding: 5px;
but I see no difference.

odd

padding-top and padding-bottom doesn't help. I'll try margin.
Lol - that's what happens when I use the GUI
It applied the style to the <a>, not to the <img>
and I sat here refreshing like crazy, changing a small thing, refreshing, and wondering what's wrong
now if I only knew how each paragraph happened to become a <div> instead of a <p>...

4:01 PM
success at last! bwahahahahha!

@ElendilTheTall congrats
how did you do it?

Bought a book rather than looking on blogs

what...is it...

also, I like the subtle hints in your composition - obviously, there is a single lonely macaron left for photographing, because the rest was stuffed into your mouth as soon as they emerged from the oven :)

None of the blogs I read mentioned the macaronnage stage which seems to be pretty vital in getting the right texture

4:03 PM
What is the mararonnage stage?

@rfusca a macaron!

also, if they mentioned it, how would they sell their books

@rumtscho the stage after mixing where you work out all the air bubbles

(luckily, I caught that typo in the last moment before ending the last word and hitting enter - s/b/k)
@ElendilTheTall you must teach us
or write a blog post about it
if all the other blogs don't tell it, then it is a perfect topic for us

indeed

4:06 PM
@derobert and @rfusca, I am done editing
Didn't change much of the text, only 2-3 expressions
but converted all paragraphs to paragraphs
these divs looked terrible and were completely unnecessary.
I didn't touch the double and triple spaces, I hope @derobert has an auto solution for them

@rumtscho yep, I can fix those with a quick regexp

@derobert OK, saved as pending. You can go in.

@elendil you got photo blogs coming for your rental?

cooking.blogoverflow.com/wp-admin/… ... though it looks like it somehow changed image links?
will fix
@rumtscho so, are we going to create the "you did WHAT?!" series of posts or not? Because if so, I need to categorize this one.

4:22 PM
@derobert do you think there will be more such posts?
I haven't seen them coming

I hope so. Not sure what other equipment mods we'll cover.

does tomato sorbet count?
But I don't like my current recipe
it tastes of lemon and sugar, with a hint of tomato
Actually, I wanted to keep savory sorbets or ice creams for a separate post on MG for everybody.

This should become a series, You did what to your oven‽, covering all sorts of equipment modifications. — derobert Apr 3 at 21:01

@derobert I don't think there will be more oven-modding posts.

Well, but what about equipment in general (that was my comment on the blog ideas post)
I guess we can always go back and categorize it if we get a second.

4:24 PM
But "You did WHAT?" can become a category if we have more surprising posts
@derobert yes, equipment doesn't sound bad

@rfusca yes, working on it. Thinking a post on blending exposures in landscape photography and another one with a few travel tog tips

@ElendilTheTall sounds good
when do you think?

@rumtscho @rfusca OK, post is scheduled for noon tomorrow, I think I got all the double-spacing

@derobert why is the first paragraph centered again?
It was that way when I started editing too

@rumtscho ummm. Will fix.

4:27 PM
but I made it left.
@derobert the rest looks nice

its because the gui editor has made itself some silly HTML

ok, supposedly i just added a favicon to my site
they just rolled out that feature
sweet, it works

@rumtscho OK, look now... cooking.blogoverflow.com/2012/06/…

@rfusca the favicon is visible, but the green one-third picture isn't fixed

@rumtscho hmm k
are the gallery navigations overlaid?

4:36 PM
The navigation is visible all the time (obviously, there is no "hover" on a touchscreen)

right, k, that was their fix
for the hover issue
but its still green, when you click and before the next loads, right?

Is there anybody here that knows about convolution etc?

@rumtscho somehow, it appears blogoverflow thinks you have a newer version. Which is actually older. UGH.

@derobert it looks good for me now

@derobert its just revolting against a sea of silly changes ;)

4:38 PM
@derobert I went out of the editing page now.
Your link said "permission denied", so I had to go into the editing view and hit Preview.
@Mien convolution? You mean as in "the plot line is convoluted"?

@rumtscho there is a preview link on 'all posts', you can use that one

@rumtscho the multiplication of two functions.

cooking.blogoverflow.com/2012/06/… ... that will probably work for everyone. At least everyone who is a blog admin.

@derobert everyone who is a blog admin confirms working.

why wait until tomorrow btw

4:41 PM
LOL

tuesday's traffic is probably higher

@rfusca we decided to stick to our schedule

Hmmm, I don't know why we publish on Wednesdays... I guess it just happened that way.

don't worry. traffic is nicely spread over a few days.

Do you always publish on Wed?

4:42 PM
@derobert I actually like it on Wednesdays

@rfusca Yep. Except for specials.

odd
our blog gets hit much more on Mondays

@rfusca we publish every second wednesday.
Monday would be terrible.

I try to publish late sunday to catch all the monday readers (but not always, just when its close enough)
y?

People are writing on weekends.
And we are not always online on weekends to edit.
So, for a Monday publishing, we would have to require stuff on Thursday
or rather Wednesday, if the deadline slips

4:44 PM
We get a big spike in readership whenever we publish, and that lasts for a few days after that...

but then it looks soo early to writers that they procrastinate

And it goes down on weekends
other than that, no clear trend, at least eyeballing it

Yes, I think that from the editing cycle, Wednesday is good

Ultimately, if we can get more short articles, we can hopefully get a queue... then we can publish whenever.
Speaking of editing cycles, what's the status of the Ratio review, @rumtscho ?

Yes, if we get a queue, we can make lots of changes.
@derobert wait, didn't Yossarian say he is still writing?

4:47 PM
@yossarian, what's the status of the Ratio review?

Jun 15 at 20:30, by yossarian
@derobert, I'm not waiting on you for a review. Remind me again of the posting schedule for Ratio and TFB?

@rumtscho Of course, I need to make a batch of ice cream tonight, and get to work on photos, or I'm going to miss the deadline for the special :-(

@derobert what was the deadline?
I will make pics of my current state tonight
But I hope that I can get a next iteration which looks better

@rumtscho Friday (Jun 22) for first draft

actually, I still haven't scooped balls from this version
maybe the balls will look good.
It is the surface which swims in mixed fiery red and sapphire blue.

4:50 PM
I'm going to see how hard it is to cut ice cream into bars. If possible, I hope to assemble a flag (w/o stars, too much work)

I am thinking of bars too
not for assembling a flag
but for layering the syrups
first making a layer of white
then syrup on it
and 24 hours freezing to get it hard.
One batch for red and one for blue.
Then cut it into bars, turn the bars, stack them beside each other in the container.
Scoop through the bars.

I'm thinking I need to make red tonight (hopefully, I can strain blueberry to get reddish). Then freeze that, and hopefully tomorrow I can make white... and then put those together. And then worry about blue (purple) on Thursday.
I wish I had more than one of the freezer containers for the ice cream maker. Oh well.
Oh, reminds me, I need to buy more cream tonight.

add a bit of acid to the blueberries to get them redder - it goes well with the taste.
A little bit of lemon juice works.
I wonder what to do about my blue.
It is very clear, saturated and light.

@rumtscho hmm, I have citric acid around, I'll add a tiny bit

If you have watched a pampers ad, you know what my blue syrup looks like.

4:55 PM
what is your blue from?

Any ideas how to get it toned down?
@derobert food coloring from the tube.
It is sugar syrup, cream of tartar, a capful of rum, and food coloring. 108°C - threads stage.

well, you could darken and desaturate it by adding the other primaries

I don't want to darken and desaturate as much as getting it more opaque
I know that I can add a bit of red (the shade is very turquoise now)

a little cream would add opacity

In the syrup itself? I'm not sure I want to do that, it will make it pastel
Actually, the syrup slightly mixed with the freshly churned cream when layering, and I din't like the results

4:58 PM
more sugar?

@Mien you mean crystals? Sugar is transparent....

@mien, no. More sugar will stay transparent but make it gummy instead of liquid, right up to rock candy.
And it is very ugly and unpleasant to eat when crystalized, I actually let it cool like it is the first time and it crystalized badly, had to reheat and add the cream of tartar.

@rumtscho Oh, what about some cornstarch, like in a frosting? Or powdered sugar?
The problem with any white is its going to desaturate the color, you'll have to add more food coloring to compensate

@derobert powdered sugar will melt/dissolve and act like normal sugar. Cornstarch is transparent when made without milk.

@rumtscho no, I mean added after cooling.

5:01 PM
I already added something like half a tube of food coloring.
@derobert I don't want raw cornstarch in it, ewww.

@rumtscho powdered sugar may be ok, though

@derobert I meant powdered sugar.

oh! you could try and whip it. The air will give it opacity.

@derobert It will not dissolve in the supersaturated solution, so it will stay in there as a powder, suspended.
Whip a syrup?
There is nothing to keep the foam.
Also, sugar syrups tend to have a large-bubble foam, which doesn't go opaque.

@rumtscho yes, if it stays there as a powder, suspended, its going to stay opaque, hopefully.

5:03 PM
@derobert I am afraid it is just going to look like toothpaste with "whitening pearls".
But I don't know if I will get to do anything about it tonight

@rumtscho yeah, problem would be if its not possible to get it mixed well

I just remembered that my computer broke this morning :(

@rumtscho Oooh! Time to install Debian?

I think there must have been a kernel update yesterday.
@derobert I'll try tweaking Xorg.conf first
The old kernels load, the newest doesn't
But to see grub, I have to disconnect the left monitor
and when the left monitor is disconnected, the mouse behaves funky

wtf? That's weird. Grub works fine in my multi-monitor setups

5:05 PM
@derobert my right monitor is the main one
but BIOS thinks that the main monitor is the left one and only sends a signal to it.

It displays on both on mine, but I guess the card boots to mirroring mode

So POST takes place on the left.

but then why doesn't grub display on the left monitor?

The right monitor stays in sleep mode until it gets a very strong signal
and by that time, GRUB is over.
The left monitor can't display anything without xorg.conf anyway, because it sends wrong EDID to the video card
without tweaks, it doesn't run on Linux.

But does the BIOS display there? If so, Grub should. Grub uses the BIOS video (or at least can)

5:08 PM
and the right monitor is a very new model with strong energy-saving features I guess
I don't know what my GRUB uses, I know that I don't see it for a normal boot
I think that by the time GRUB is started, the signal is already sent to the right monitor
but the right monitor needs 10 to 15 seconds to wake up or something
I'll try booting from stick to repair the xorg.conf - and hope that the mouse starts working then

Can you get the boot to hold in grub? I mean, hit ESC or whatever to get the prompt up? That should give enough time for the monitor to return from DPMS off mode
And if your BIOS is on the left screen, grub ought to be as well

I don't know how to hold a boot.
I don't know anything about "ought", I know that it isn't

Once you get the grub prompt up, if you press anything, it should sit and wait

Ah, OK. I will try to time it, which is kinda hard when I don't see anything.

Can you see the BIOS?

5:11 PM
But I have to get home first, where the broken computer is
Yes, I see the BIOS on the left screen. Or, when I start with the left screen disconnected, I see the BIOS and then GRUB.

I'd try setting GRUB_TERMINAL=console in /etc/default/grub , that will cause it to use BIOS text mode.

Ugh, maybe I should take the laptop home so I can check the Internet for troubleshooting advice
but I have a small purse today
Maybe the phone will be enough for Googling.

well, its going to be that or having fun STFW on your phone

The reason I got a phone with a HD display is to be able to see enough of a web page on it to actually be useful.
OK, I am headed for home. And I won't stop at the swing tonight.

LOL
@rumtscho but, to confirm if it was really the swing (as opposed to, say, food poisoning), you need to repeat the experiment!
(just make sure to ask the IRB first—wouldn't want to be caught doing science without approval!)

5:17 PM
@derobert It wasn't food poisoning - I ate the same dish today
not freshly prepared, I can't cook every day anew. Just pulled out of the fridge and slightly rewarmed.
Also, the symptoms aren't really food-poisoning-like.

Upset stomach isn't?

Upset stomach is, but headaches concentrated around the eyes are unusual. Missing bloating and diarrhoea are also strange for food poisoning.
Oh, and I started feeling better as soon as I got off the swing.
It just took me a lot of time to get back to normal.
so, until later.

@rumtscho Well, some just cause vomiting. And headache could be from dehydration.
