« first day

00:21
I'm back
I am bored about this situation too... sorry sir..it is typically 90%
Dont be sorry
00:42
it is almost done... but linux-headers-6.8.0-52-generic
linux-headers-6.8.0-53-generic
linux-headers-generic
linux-generic
failed to get configured for some reason... but however all is fine :D
creating a paste for my kept packages due tyo conflicts
retrying full-upgrade command and coming back
thanks sir
but what should i do with other conflicts ?
issue apt autoremove
send a new paste after
re run that say y. We want APT to finish even if it determines 400 arent upgradeable | new paste after
same command again
alright
```
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Reading state information... Done
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 480 not upgraded.
```
ok now we're ready reboot so were on the new kernel those 480 are going to sit there
okay sir.. i hope it is not a serious problem (if GUI is messed or emergency mode)
after reboot: apt update && apt upgrade
01:06
alright sir
even if so I can do this from a terminal
You should have a working Desktop
APT should still report 0, upgrades and 480 not upgraded
it is almost there.. but on the kernel logs there is error about failed dhcpd... but desktop seems to be working fine... i will test networking & APT and come back
01:21
What was the dhcpd error? If networking is down
both of networking and sound is down
do you have the error for dhcpd?
or can you use NetworkManager from the GUI?
We can worry about sound after we upgrade to 24.xx
Dinner about 15 minutes
i can't upload photos from mobile and can't connect to internet to send you logs ........... you can eat your dinner and enjoy life and i will send you any updates soon
sorry for wasting your time... i will send any updates
i got dhcpcd working...for some reason systemd-resolved was masked so /run/systemd/resolve was not created
running apt-get update
xD OS crashed randomly and PC is restarting
kernel is crashing idk why and can't boot
cya sir later... i have to run a live Ubuntu
it is because of networking drivers on systemd-modules-load 🥲
02:28
systemd-networkd and dhcpd cannot be running at the same time systemd-networkd's default is dhcp
@Zorono you can also boot the old kernel and see if networking works
Once Networking id up start at Step 6 in the site I copied earlier

5 hours later…
07:19
yeah idk why did that happen...
i got sounds working
i will retry installing packages which are marked as conflict

6 hours later…
12:59
regarding step number 5 and 6... do-release-upgrade tool is failing to continue the upgrade:
```
Checking for a new Ubuntu release
There is no development version of an LTS available.
To upgrade to the latest non-LTS development release
set Prompt=normal in /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades.
```

2 hours later…
15:03
@Zorono What is the output of lsb_release -a

1 hour later…
16:12
```
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS
Release: 24.04
Codename: noble
```
16:51
Your done!!!!
thanks bro :D but it seems like coreutils is the masin problem where the conflict with usrmerge relies
i am very very sorry for wasting your day
You didnt waste anyones time What exactly is going on with usrmerge?
i have chosen *Y to remove some packages after marking usrmerge as in hold by apt-mark
i don't know sir but it is a critical package and coreutils is conflicting with it idk why
should i report my problem at launchpad ??
is the usrmerge version 25ubuntu2
exactly
17:04
If you go here: packages.ubuntu.com and search for usrmerge for version nobe it doesn't exist which means it isnt needed. This is going to look dangerous but: apt remove usrmerge && apt install coreutils should fix the problem as coreutils now defaults to the /usr directory by default
if usrmerge is successfully removed and coreutils installs use apt purge usrmerge
alright sir, thanks btw i will try out this after apt full-upgrade process finish (it is currently upgrading/removing conflicts)
usrmerge was a temporary fix. See General Van Helden's answer here: askubuntu.com/questions/1406991/…
oh... thanks sir
You're Welcome
i will make sure to edit the question to add latest changes to the situation
17:12
Not a problem as you are now on Noble, the rest is just apt cleanup
alright
thanks sir for everything... if there is any problem i will try to contact you or create a new question (hopefully there won't be any future problems)
Just be aware that usrmerge has to be removed and coreutils have to be apted in tandem with the &&. I'll keep this open in case there are issues
17:28
and don't forget to remove your mark/pin...
done sir
i will try restarting the OS and come back
Great :)
17:52
it is working fine
thanks sir
Gnome's topbar and top menu are bugged a little but it is still good
i don't know how to thank you sir
dhcpcd icon on the top bar's background is black (but it is OK)
and top menu's UI is so weird after enabling many extensions like Caffeine
but it is OK
thanks sir for everything
Read this: msn.com/en-gb/news/techandscience/… and reset dconf to default. The settings in your home directory are your old ones + the new ones we just installed and they are "fighting"
That should fix that quirk
Of course after resetting dconf youll need to tweak again....
Thanks sir, i will try out this approuch and hopefully i won't lose any important customizations
unfortunately Yes
i will try backing up dconf before reseting it
Apologies for that but thats dconf. This is personal preference but you might want to check the apps you always use that store settings in dot folders in your home directory also and rebuild those
hmm i will backup .config folders from root and my user too which is a big deal but it is okay sir
Now you've got another few years to repeat the cycle lol
18:05
yeah hopefully they won't make any breaking changes again
You've now hit the cruft cleaning phase lol
yeah i had to do this cleanup two years ago anyway (i kept on trying to fix several critical issues in my OS for years and thanks to god anyway)
Old but still relevant: wiki.ubuntu.com/CleanupCruft
I'll watch for any new posts from you or just tag me with the @ sign if you need anything more
alright thanks sir
It's been a pleasure helping you...
18:10
me too sir
This whole experience has made me want to write a post of my own.... may take a few days but I think you'll like it
yeah, i would be honored to read it
when you finish writing it please tell me
it would help me in future problems
