@FumbleFingers The problem is that when teaching English, you have to use the term phrasal verb. He turned down the road on the left. He turned down the job. He turned down the radio. Her turned down the bed. Otherwise you can't diferentiate: turn + prep. phrase AND turn down as a single meaning. So, it really does not matter what people like Puddle& Huddle say, learning English is not about reading or understanding grammar deeply.
