Q: When and why did Shiva take arthanārīśvara form?

The arthanārīśvara form of śiva is quite famous. It depicts the equality of Male and female energy in the universe. When and why did śiva give half of his body to śivā (Pārvati )? Which scripture describes this form of śiva?
