Q: Is there a universal symbol for Hinduism?

Pratik BhatI have come across many symbols like ॐ , Swastika , Yantra and Lord Shiva's Trident that are generally associated with Hinduism. Just like the cross represents Christianity or crescent represents Islam, is there any universal symbol for Hinduism?

Q: What is the reason to touch the elder person's feet for blessing?

KedarnathIn India it is tradition that when a person meets his relative who are elder in the age ( just like grandfather,uncle,in-laws ) then that person touch their feet for the greetings & blessing. What is the reason/story behind touching a feet for blessing ?

4:01 AM
@Mr.Alien Can you please edit my question to make it sound more meaningful?

Q: Does lord Shiva drink Bhang and beedi?

Mr_GreenI have seen many people who worship lord Shiva. These people prefer always to be naked and paste their whole body with ash. I am not sure what those people are known as but I have seen them in Kumbhmela on Television. These people always drink Bhang and beedi and also says that lord Shiva too h...

4:36 AM
Hey @Mr.Alien, thanks for your concerns, I am back now :)

4:51 AM
@KeshavSrinivasan Hi
Shubhoday @all

@Mr_Green Hi

@KeshavSrinivasan are you a dev?

A what?
A developer?

yeah

No, I study theoretical physics.

4:54 AM
nice..

Are you a rev?
Dev*

yes
@KeshavSrinivasan so is it some kind of Higher studies?
as you are studying on a particular subject

Yeah, I'm got a bachelors in physics and math as well as a masters in math in four years, and now I'm working on a masters in physics, after which I'll apply for PhD programs.
I've got*
I'm think I'm one of the few active users who live in America, by the way.

OMG.. you sound a geek of books :)

4:59 AM
I was willing to study more on maths and physics too but due to personal reasons ended up in a job

But you find them interesting?

yeah I love Maths

hello

and want to know about physics too..

@AwalGarg Hi

5:00 AM
but not chemistry it is very tough and confusing

math === the most polished tool for physics ever made!
@Mr_Green chemistry is a mystery without any history

math is also used in chemistry

oh a special hello to Keshav, who rarely enters this sacred chat place!!!

to balance the equations

@AwalGarg Yeah, it indicates to me the hand of God in creation.

5:01 AM
haha
@Keshav why don't you come here often?
oh hello @TheDictator

Shubh Prabhatam
@AwalGarg hello

o/

@AwalGarg I was talking about math being the perfect tool for physics, not about my presence here

@KeshavSrinivasan i know i know
50 secs ago, by Awal Garg
@Keshav why don't you come here often?

5:03 AM
@AwalGarg Mainly because I live in America, so I'm asleep when most of y'all are talking.

then you should come to India :P

err. what ya doin in that firangi's country?

spreading Hinduism?

@Mr_Green Haha that's one solution.

I hope that you still hold Indian citizenship. As in legally...

5:05 AM
@KeshavSrinivasan what is the time there now?

@AwalGarg No, I'm born in the US.
It's 1:05 AM.

@KeshavSrinivasan WAAAAAAT?

What time is it in India?

how then do you know so much about hinduism???
@KeshavSrinivasan 10:36 AM

10:36 am

5:06 AM
@Mr_Green dupe dupe

@KeshavSrinivasan though u take interest in Hinduism thats big thing

@AwalGarg delete urs :P

@Mr_Green nope, yours is duplicate. I vote to close yours ;p

@AwalGarg I'm devoutly religious, so I take great interest in learning as much as I can.
I'm on the path of Jnana Yoga.

@KeshavSrinivasan how are schools there? Do they follow the same wrote learning process?

5:08 AM
don't you get disturb often as you are in America where no one around you think like that?
I think he is getting sleep

@AwalGarg No, in America emphasis is more on learning than on rote memorization. That's why American kids do worse on standardized tests.

@KeshavSrinivasan so, where in America?

@AwalGarg why planning to drop a missile?

New Jersey, Indian capital of America

o.O. kya aapko hindi bolni aati hai? @KeshavSrinivasan
@Mr_Green missile is too small. lemme see, atomic bomb???? lol

5:10 AM
@AwalGarg Sorry, I'm Tamil

:D

All I can say is Hindi Nahi Malum.

ever came to India????

Yeah, I go very couple years or so.
every*

is your accent also like them?
them === americans

5:12 AM
When I'm with my parents I speak with an Indian accent, when I speak with white people I speak with an American accent.

dual accent! wow... pretty impressive. like dual sim lol

Haha, it's standard practice for all Indian Americans.

next time when you come to India, make sure you bring a gun, and kill all politicians here.
no joke.

Haha, yeah the politicians in America are much less corrupt. I'm really embarassed whenever I go to India and see my relatives bribing cops.

bribing cops??? you call that corruption? man, that is the standard way to get things done here.

5:16 AM
Haha. It is the Kali Yuga after all, so even Bharata Varsha is polluted with sin.

certainly it is embarrassing, the same way I am embarrassed with what I study (only crap)...

If you try to bribe a cop in America, he'd arrest you in one second.

oh well, I think there is no need to bribe a cop in America. Things are pretty simple in there, AFAIK. Here, rules are damn weird, and we have to bend them, which requires bribing.

@KeshavSrinivasan here indian cops earn more money in bribe then their salary

lol yes.

5:18 AM
@AwalGarg Why, what do you study?

@KeshavSrinivasan some history which they call science

@AwalGarg They make the rules weird so that you have to bribe your way out of them.

exactly...
is it true that the gov there gives pocket money to students?

@AwalGarg Yeah, if can't afford to go to college the government pays for tuition and general living expenses.

@AwalGarg even here govt. provide pocket money if you have higher studies

5:20 AM
@AwalGarg if u are jobless there then also they will provide you some sort of money...

like theoretical physics

o.O
hmm, yah @Mr_Green The nda exam thingy right?

And every senior citizen will get pension after 60
or may be 58

not sure but one of my friends is having pocket money
he studies same as Keshav

@TheDictator because it is difficult to reach that age alive... (now a days)

5:23 AM
@Mr_Green They especially give money to foreign students who want to go to college here, to encourage the world's brightest minds to come to America.

@KeshavSrinivasan no doubt, the greatest percentage would be from India...

nice

@AwalGarg Too bad we don't live in an earlier Yuga, or else we could live much longer
@AwalGarg And China.

@KeshavSrinivasan yep, reason being that there are an awful lot of people in both the countries!!!
I think, I would prefer living to a short age only. Even the age 35 sounds damn scary to me.... wow! 35, what the hell would I do for so long? I hate boredom.

@AwalGarg Yeah, and because Asian parents teach their kids to value studies more. In America white parents yell at their kids if they study too much.

5:26 AM
@KeshavSrinivasan so, if your parentage is Indian, then which of the cases applies to you ;p

@AwalGarg Indian parents teach their kids to value education even in America.
That's why I'm a lifelong nerd.

thy shall revolt!!!

^read and rofl

Haha
You want me to revolt against my parents or against white people not valuing education?

5:30 AM
moral of the story: The experimenter are your parents and teachers. The shower is a sum of their taunts, slaps etc, we are the monkeys, and taking the bananas is innovation....
@KeshavSrinivasan I think we all shall revolt against everyone elder to us.

Well, if I revolt against the general society I'm living in then I should study even more.

so finally, no doubt how much elders keep telling us "think new", they actually won't let you think anything. And you won't ever understand why. And if you try to think new, your fellows would be the one pulling your leg.
@KeshavSrinivasan revolt in such a fashion, that you don't have to study.

@AwalGarg Haha

hell-o/ mister @jabahar

@AwalGarg hi... let me see.. what you are upto today :D

5:33 AM
^this... lol

@jabahar Hi

actually, I started laughing rhetorically very very very loud, when I read the line "I don't know, thats how things are done here". I immediately understood what the demonstrator was upto...

haha....lol... ROFL...that comic made my day :D

@AwalGarg Maybe the people who came before you knew something you don't. Heard of Chesterton's fenxe? epicureandealmaker.blogspot.com/2012/03/chesterton-fence.html

@KeshavSrinivasan hi
@AwalGarg so i know wht u want to say ...

5:37 AM
@KeshavSrinivasan nope. looking at the blog now.
@jabahar And if not, I already explained in crystal clear words.. read up.

@AwalGarg we are monkeys then? Who are you the scientist who put cold water?

8 mins ago, by Awal Garg
moral of the story: The experimenter are your parents and teachers. The shower is a sum of their taunts, slaps etc, we are the monkeys, and taking the bananas is innovation....

whatever you say MR.God

@jabahar stupefy!!!

@jabahar Some time could you take a look at my unanswered Vedas-based questions? I think you may be the only one with the expertise to answer them.

5:41 AM
@KeshavSrinivasan why do you think he would be the "only" one? ;p

@AwalGarg haha

haha, I agree with you though, lol

@KeshavSrinivasan your questions require a deep study and when it comes to the core Vedas, I don't have much knowledge. I have never tried to study them on my own. I have studied only with the Upanishads parts

@AwalGarg I wish more users would get in the habit of reading scriptures and quote them in their answers. Then maybe I could get some answers to my obscure questions.

jabahar, keshav ji aapko makhan laga rahe hain

5:44 AM
@AwalGarg Hindi Nahi Malum

@KeshavSrinivasan it was for jabahar, and I wrote it in hindi, so you don't get it ;p

@AwalGarg haha

@KeshavSrinivasan lol, it just says that - "Keshav is buttering you, so you answer his question" ... lol

@jabahar The maybe you could try your hand at my Upanishad-based question: hinduism.stackexchange.com/questions/2204/…

@KeshavSrinivasan is there a tl;dr version for that?

5:48 AM
yeah, that can not be from Taitariya as it doesn't have fifth parva like you have written

@AwalGarg I found a claim in a British-era document about the Tirupati Temple that the Taittirya Upanishad references Venkateshwra (AkA Balaji or Srinivasa). But I can't find the statement in that Upanishad.

hmm... interesting.

@jabahar That's why I think it may be from Mahanarayana Upanishad.

anyone knows about Takshila?

The major upanishads do not contain any reference to any installed deity except the primary ones like Varnua, Indra, etc.

5:50 AM
the mega awesome ancient library?

yeah, it may be present in sectarian upanishads

so where is the library located anyways?
is it accessible? and are the books in a readable condition?

@AwalGarg The city founded by Rama's brother Bharata?

@KeshavSrinivasan it is a great library

@AwalGarg you gone there?

5:53 AM
2 mins ago, by Awal Garg
so where is the library located anyways?
u gotta be kidding
where is fairy?

yeah... i was kidding... you said it is a great library as if it exists and you have visited :D

@TheDictator bring fairy here..
!!live

@AwalGarg It looks like we lost it to Pakistan: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taxila

wikipedia says @KeshavSrinivasan is right about its relation to Rama and Bharata.
@KeshavSrinivasan yeah that... lost? Who the hell is Pakistan?
ok, it seems to a university.. or maybe a town which was famous for its university and the university famous for its library.

It's sad that Sita's city of Mithila is in Nepal, Bharata's city of Takshakila is in Pakistan, Shiva's abode of Kailash is in China, etc.
@AwalGarg The Wikipedia page doesn't even mention a library.

5:58 AM
thy shall REVOOOOOOOLT!!!!
@KeshavSrinivasan ain't sure where I got the reference for the library from... wait, researching

@AwalGarg haha, maybe we need someone to perfom a Rajasuya Yagna to take back all of the Indian subcontinent

@AwalGarg you said the wrong thing... its Nalanda universty which was at taxila
that's why Keshav didnt find it on wiki

@KeshavSrinivasan @jabahar which is the place from where we got all the upnishadas, vedas, etc?

@jabahar "there did not seem to have existed purpose-built lecture halls and residential quarters in Takshashila,[8][9][10] in contrast to the later Nalanda university in eastern India."
@AwalGarg Naimisharanya

@KeshavSrinivasan where is it?
ok, second google result for ancient indian libraries says nalanda.
!!afk

6:02 AM
@KeshavSrinivasan what is that?

@AwalGarg It's in Uttar Pradesh: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naimisha_Forest
@jabahar You never heard of Naimisharanya?

@KeshavSrinivasan i meant, what was that previous message you sent?

@jabahar The quote says says that Nalanda university is different from the university at Taxila.

oh, yeah may be. I don't know, i knew Nalanda had a very large library. and it was in the place taxila
i am not sure, it was in history book in high school

@jabahar Taxila is near Punjab, Nalanda is in Bihar.

6:07 AM
yeah, i see it on wiki
then don't know why taxila is in my mind
let me see

Morning

can't remember, but had read about taxila in history for some reason
@AnkitSharma mornig

6:44 AM
@AwalGarg Yeah, I'll keep asking them, I just wish I got answers.

@KeshavSrinivasan I finally got the evidence of takshila being a library...
wait, I'll post the link here

@AwalGarg We need to attract more experts.

PSA: We need more experts on Hinduism.
^pin that @Mr_Green lol
@KeshavSrinivasan this en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…
and it also describes nalanda as one.

@AwalGarg OK thanks.

@KeshavSrinivasan so, how exactly did we get the vedas from that forest?

6:49 AM
@TheDictator you said words of my gf as crap....curse you :p
@Mr_Green dream dream/////:P

@AwalGarg We didn't. But we got other texts from there, like Mahabharata and various Puranas.

@KeshavSrinivasan "got" as in, we found the texts lying there?

@AwalGarg No, got as in oral tradition.

@KeshavSrinivasan oh. What I was asking is, where did we get the hard copies from?

@AnkitSharma Command love learned

6:52 AM
@AwalGarg Naimisharanya was a forest where sages would tell stuff to each other.

Room alive again, goodmorning everyone

@fairybot I tried to suspend your brother, so you say I don't make sense?

@AwalGarg Our sacred texts were passed down via oral tradition for countless generations, then when writing became more common they were put down in manuscripts

6:54 AM
@KeshavSrinivasan whaaat? you mean what I have been assuming for so long was crap?

@AwalGarg What were you assuming?

@AwalGarg because green is her brother

@KeshavSrinivasan that Vishnu made them in hard copy form...

Anyways finally visited Akshardham.......loved it

@DroidDev yea I read somewhere that you were on a holiday for around 20 days

6:55 AM
@AwalGarg Haha

@Mr.Alien credit goes to me :)

@AnkitSharma that crappy place (except for the boat riding).

@Mr_Green bhang and beedi?

@AwalGarg The only Hindu scriptures whose words are divinely authored are the Veda Samhitas.

@AnkitSharma for?

6:56 AM
@KeshavSrinivasan he made them as lively beings, right?

^^ making room alive again ;)

@AnkitSharma yea right :p

@KeshavSrinivasan so, where are those original vedas?

Thinking to ask few akshardham related question tonight.

@AwalGarg Yeah, the four Sanat Kumaras are the embodiments of the four Vedas.

@TheDictator never knew kidneys does the cleaning job, lol
