@JourneymanGeek Didn't you say you used some kind of BSD or something?
FreeBSD?

@forest nope

oh

Actually all ubuntu LTS for fun, used to work with centos professionally.
OH
HP UX

RIP CentOS

don't laugh

1:25 AM
Haha HP-UX :D

but not a BSD

lol sorry
HP-SUX is a sorry excuse for a UNIX.

NOT AS SORRY AS ME
.... on itanium
as a hardware snob....

Ever used IRIX?

1:26 AM
Neat package manager it has huh.

I actually have an SGI ocatane at home I forgot the password to

The security of those systems is so bad I can't even call it a joke.

been meaning to get it running at some point
@forest its no secret that the singaporean model of computer security is "airgap all the things"

But do they do it well?

hmm
in the sense that its literally disconnected from the outside world?
If I knew, I couldn't tell you

1:30 AM
heh
Well it's not an airgap if it's not physically disconnected!

I don't know if it is! And if I did, I couldn't tell you!

:p

But id I did know, I'd tell you I didn't know, but I don't but I know why I don't but I can't tell you

Parser error: out of memory
(Yes I have many memory leaks in my mental linguistic parser and lexer)

oh its ok
the last time I did that, I purposely broke my former boss's brain :D

1:41 AM
lol

2:37 AM
I have a domain controller and running impacket's lookupsid.py gets me several user SIDs which should be on SMB/LDAP but should have no business working on said DC. Is this normal behaviour or is it a red flag?

Embarrassing Moments As A Security Professional #583: Realizing in the middle of a conversation with a high-ranking colleague that you've been referring to Cloudflare as SolarWinds for the last five minutes.

4:34 AM
Oh man I've done that kind of thing.

1 hour later…
5:45 AM
Hello, is cyber sec on topic here?
I want to report an exploit to an agency
but they dont have a proper contact us...how do I go about it

2 hours later…
7:16 AM
@Snapdragon-X No contact us at all, or no security contact?

@Snapdragon-X would depend on the agency. Some countries might have a consolidated agency for handling such things.

@JourneymanGeek I don't think they mean a government agency. Sounds more like a language barrier. Unless they mean a government web app, in which case wheee, sounds fun!

such monstrocities exsist

Indeed, but usually those sites have nothing interesting behind them.
They're not much more than a glorified blog with a fancy, official-looking TLD.

7:42 AM
On an internal network, how do you start enumerating IPv6 stuff?

@forest govtech here is inordinately fond of these things

@JourneymanGeek What, govt sites with sensitive stuff inside?

@forest lol. Probably
Not sure how that jives with airgap all the things 🤣
But sure. Most government services are online
And have fairly sensitive stuff

Hey, you refer me to any sites that you suspect have something juicy, and I'll give you a cut of the profits. :^)

7:58 AM
Lol

8:19 AM
@JourneymanGeek You think I'm joking, but you have a real chance to earn a fraction of a dollar from the two dollars that someone would pay for a Singaporean government leak. ;)

9:07 AM
@forest You can mine Dogecoin, but (I think by design) the value of the mined money can only decrease with time. You can mine it, but you can hardly make a profit from it.

huh

It's fitting for a coin that was made as a joke.

1 hour later…
10:11 AM
ikr

10:47 AM
@A.Hersean the value can increase over time, by the law of supply and demand. supply is capped, but demand isn't. So if more people start using Dogecoin every day, the price increases. Not that it would happen, but it's a possibility.
funny question on security: "someone is bruteforcing my wordpress, and the IP isn't from tor nor vpn. how is that possible?"

11:28 AM
Yeah I tried to answer that question without asking "are you serious?" lol

it's like those people that post "I have a server and someone is pinging it. how to send them to jail?"

@ThoriumBR Just echo their IP to /dev/police

serious, jurisdiction is a tangled mess on the internet. if you are French, your server is in Canada, operated by an US company, and a Nigerian uses a Brazilian hacked server belonging to a Colombian company but operated by an Italian company hosted in Brazil, who is responsible for investigating the cirime?
that's how Kazaa kept running for so long while evading RIAA attacks... they had a lot of jurisdictions involved and until every one intervened, Kazaa kept running
iirc, sharman networks, fasttack tech, the devs and the servers were separate entities on separate countries
found the article on it...
kazaa, good old times: https://www.wired.com/2003/02/kazaa/
2003? it's that far back?

12:32 PM
You're talking about Kazaa as if that's not how our ancestors got their music

@JourneymanGeek yeah, I found NCIIPC nciipc.gov.in/documents/Vulnerability_Disclosure_Form.pdf to report such incidents

I was there... I was in college back then
didn't got online enough to have napster, but kazaa, audiogalaxy and winmx were my dear friends

@ThoriumBR Ironically, I started to get into torrenting not because of piracy, but because of legitimate free-to-play games

and winmx survival was long, defying expectations

The reason being was that my internet back then was extraordinarily unstable, and slow
So downloading a 2GB patch for a game was basically impossible in one go
So the developers released the patch as a torrent in addition to direct download

12:36 PM
my first torrent download was red hat 4 or 5...
not the new redhat, the old one before fedora

And for torrents, it didn't matter if your connection kept shitting out. Sure, you'd lose a 4MB block, but better that than the full 2GB file
I kept playing a lot of free-to-play games as a kid, because I simply had no way of paying for games

redhat 7.1, i386...

My father disallowed me from buying videogames in a store. I did it once, he freaked the fuck out, broke the disc and forbid me from playing videogames for 2 months
And I had no way to buy games digitally, since I didn't have any way to pay online
So all I had as options was wishing for a new game for my birthday or for christmas, or free-to-play games
That's how I got into Warsow, at least for a while
Then I discovered piracy and holy shit, was it an amazing feeling to suddenly be able to play any game you wanted
I remember downloading Unreal Tournament 2004 and I've loved the game ever since

I had an pretty ooutdated computer (a Pentium 166MHz in 2002, the era of Pentium 3, Athlon, Duron et al), so I could only play old games. abandonware and emulators were all I could have

Yeah, my hardware was shit too. the games I played were all pretty dated, and those "more modern" games I had to turn to the lowest settings

12:43 PM
I had a CD drive, but no soundcard, video was 256 colors, and with 8MB of ram, even snes games would suffer for dropped frames

Wow, that's really bad

by old I mean 4 generations behind. it's like having the PS2 today

I have no idea what that laptop used to have. I was just a kid and didn't understand anything about hardware

no, the original playstation today

Back then I knew absolutely nothing about computers
Today I still know nothing, but I know nothing on another level of knowledge.

12:44 PM
I knew a little... I was reading all it magazines on the school... and even the magazines from 3-4 years back were showing computers newer than mine

My problem was that my father was a very "authoritative" figure, and he liked to claim things that were false, but with 100% conviction

but in 2003 I started reselling computers to my friends (I would buy components, assemble the computers and charge 50% for my work), so I could save enough to buy the best possible computer at the time.

It taught me that displays of unshakable conviction didn't require the possession of knowledge.
Nice!!
I've only ever helped 2 friends with picking components, but that was MUCH later

after an year saving, I got the best processor available, the best motherboard, shoved in the max RAM it could support, a DVD writer, a 128MB Radeon card just released, a flat screen 17" monitor, optical mouse... it was a dream coming true

One problem was that a lot of people around me claimed to be super knowledgable, so I tried to spend a lot of time around them to learn, but I didn't learn anything, because they didn't know anything either
And since I didn't know who knew something and who knew nothing, I was a blind following the blind

12:47 PM
my computer was the fastest on my IT college, even faster than the top line computers used for high performance computing

@ThoriumBR That must have been a heavenly feeling

people joked on going to my house and stealing ny computer

Only when I went to vocational school, where I learned programming, did I actually begin to understand how computers worked
@ThoriumBR Did anyone ever do? :D

there was an amusing conversation with a friend on that days... I had winamp 1 running on my pentium, and after installing windows 2000 on the powerhouse, he got home and saw I had winamp 1 playing something. he asked why I was using winamp 1 and not winamp 3, and I said "it's because winamp 3 is heavy".
he asked "what? heavy? for you? nothing will be heavy for yor for half a decade!"
nope, nobody did... and I had that computer for 15 years... motherboard capacitors leaked, atx power leaked twice, my wife complained enough for that old computer occupying space, and I got the harddisks from it and threw it away

Not running a program because it's too hardware intense...
A feeling I have not felt in a long time

12:53 PM
the hdds are still here with me, at arms length. and the old pentium is still around. I plugged it last month, cmos battery died a decade ago, and it asks me to press f1 on the keyboard to continue. but I don't have any old AT keyboard handy
@MechMK1 it was difficult. I used to use the editor to write code, save it on a floppy disk, walk 15 minutes to campus and compile there because it was faster than compiling home

Same for me with downloading
I loved torrenting at school
Because they had like a 1Gbps connection and I had a 1Mbps connection
If even that
I know mine was slow as fuck

I had internet home after I got married.

I had internet at home when I was...8 or such. An old 56k modem
I had that for a VERY long time
I used to live on the countryside, and internet was always extremely slow
For years and years they promised we'd get broadband access, but it never happened
Then I moved into the city
Can you imagine my reaction when I had 100 Mbps internet and it was cheaper than the 1Mbps connection?!

I pay for 200MB less than I paid for 1MB

@MechMK1 Next time you write a troll question, consider "answer quickly or die fools" :D

1:45 PM
@forest Nah, my troll questions are subtle
The best troll questions are those where people debate whether it's a troll or not

Luckily, my ex was so histrionic, I've become really good at apologies
I can apologize for things I haven't even done

Anonymous
I am not sure whether that is a great skill or a terrible shame.

Anonymous
Since I very much struggle to apologise or at least, formulate one that seems genuine.

Anonymous
3:05 PM
In your case, a terrible shame given the events surrounding it.

Anonymous
Luckily, I don't have to apologise much. I never really do anything wrong. My girlfriend is very laid back. She just likes sleep and food, lmfao.

I'm really good at making them seem convincing
But they're only heartfelt if I actually feel like I did something wrong
Like, if I was with a woman and she told me that she feels like I don't spend enough time with her, I'd apologize and rectify the issue
But if she comes with "I dreamt you were cheating on me and now I am mad at you" then...well...
That's why "You should know what you did wrong" is fucking absurd. Do you want to be mad at me? Or do you want me to actually change my behavior?
I need to know what I did wrong if you want me to stop doing that in the future

Anonymous
Yeah, I see that fucking phrase "you should know what you did wrong" so much in toxic social media circles & platforms. Pure nonsense.

I've never had a first hand experience with such a ridiculous statement and I doubt I ever will.

When my gf and I first got together, I asked her about her friend group, and she told me she had no friends. Which I found weird, given that I always see her play DBD with the same group of people
So after a while, I began talking to these people, just by virtue of also playing DBD with them
Not like best buds, just you know, casual talk among people
Then months later, she asks me to block one of the guys she was talking to and who was quite friendly with. I didn't understand why and asked, and she just told me "because he was toxic to her"
It didn't seem like something he'd do, but okay, I mean I wasn't there
I didn't block him, but I removed him from my friends list

Anonymous
This sounds like it has a strong twist coming.

Time went on, and months later, I began to understand why
So on monday, I come home from work, some time around 17 or 18, and basically what I do is just sit in front of my PC and play DBD with her until 21:30. Then I took a shower, ate something and went to sleep (while she was playing DBD some more)
The same on tuesday, and on wednesday
On thursday, I told her I didn't feel like playing DBD, and that I wanted to play minecraft with my friend, and asked her if she wanted to join us. She said no, she'd rather play DBD with her friends. I said okay, and played Minecraft with him for an hour or two
After I was done, I began cooking, and overheard her complain that "I never spend time with her"
One of the guys in her current friend group contacted me on steam, and asked me about the things she said. He said "I could see you've been playing DBD together this week for hours"
And I told him "You know...she's...not very normal, in the head. But don't tell her I said that"
I don't know exactly what he said or wrote in the group chat (since I don't use Discord)
But she got really mad and told me that I should block him "for being toxic"
I asked him (unbeknownst to her) what had happened, and he told me he asked her the same question he asked me. Basically "But I saw you've been playing all week together"
And then it clicked
The reason she had no friends was because whenever any of her current friends even dared to question anything she said, she'd instigate a witch hunt against them
Telling everyone to block that person, and if they refused, they'd get blocked too. It was an instant "Them or me!" situation

Anonymous
Wow...

Anonymous
3:25 PM
That is just... Sad.

Indeed, yes
She was also incredibly jealous of my friend, because "I could talk with him about tech stuff"
She had this weird inferiority complex, where she complained that other people could do things she couldn't, or know things she didn't, but at the same time she had absolutely no interest in learning
Her message to me wasn't "Teach me about you tech stuff so we can also discuss these things"
The message was "Don't talk with your friends about things I don't understand"

Anonymous
Christ. That is absolutely insane.

She hated when I spoke german with my friend too

Anonymous
That is genuinely insane. Like, bonkers.

She is.
She really is.

Anonymous
3:29 PM
I don't even know what to say to that, it is just madness.

I only noticed after we had broken up, when I read about schizophrenia by coincidence
Did I tell you the story of the fat guy in the tram?

Anonymous
It is also quite sad, not only for you but for her like, imagine that this is how your brain works and you cannot stop it. Well, there is a chance it was purposeful but likely it is just a severe state of uncured mental illness. The fact it could get to a stage like that at all is just... Nuts.

Anonymous
No, you did not, I don't believe.

@J-- She wasn't aware of it either

Anonymous
Yeah, people rarely are.

3:30 PM
So she really hated going outside the house, but I tried to "encourage" her to do so by doing nice things with her

Anonymous
If you always know that, it seems normal to you.

And since I don't have a car, we had to go by tram. The local tram has a particular seating arrangement in one part where there are two seats facing each other on the left side, and two seats facing each other on the right side
So my ex and I were sitting on the left, and a fat guy and some other woman were sitting on the right.
And my gf didn't want to speak on the tram, because she supposedly "felt ashamed of her accent", so the entire tram ride, I just looked out of the window, and listened to the conversation the fat guy had with the woman he was sitting across with
He was talking about a watch he had received for his birthday, and soon after it stopped working, so he went to a local shop to have it fixed, but then soon after it stopped working again, etc. etc...
Just a completely uninteresting conversation, to which I never learned the conclusion
We left the tram on our stop, and my ex told me "You know, that fat guy that was sitting next to me, he said I was ugly"
And I said "No, what are you talking about? He was talking about a watch"
She said "No, I heard it! He said I looked ugly and my hair was disgusting"
Again, i repeated that he was talking about a watch, but she insisted that he insulted her. Mind you, he was speaking in a deep Austrian dialect - a dialect she did not understand at all.
Much much later, I heard that that was a symptom of schizophrenia: Believing that people talk about you, even if you can't quite hear what they say.

Anonymous
Damn.

A lot of schizophrenics also tend to make up stories in their mind about things that could possibly happen, and then have difficulties determining if those things actually happened or not
And that's something my gf also did
Like, whenever she was outside, she'd tell me stories about people who spoke to her, one guy who supposedly "tried to rob her", but I could immediately tell how bullshit it was

Anonymous
I mean, given the overwhelming amount of evidence it is likely she does have schizophrenia.

3:37 PM
She was 149cm tall and weighed 41kg. If someone "tried to rob her", he would just rob her

Anonymous
I was friends with a girl in school with it.

@J-- I don't want to play armchair doctor, but I will say that it really wouldn't surprize me if she did

Anonymous
She wasn't that popular as you can imagine.

Anonymous
Because of things like this. Or similar to this.

Funnily enough, my ex is very popular, because she looks beautiful and has a beautiful voice

Anonymous
3:38 PM
I never heard from her after I left school, actually.

That's what allows her to basically leech off of everyone around her, just by virtue of her looks

Anonymous
No idea what she does is where she is now, hopefully okay.

I honestly couldn't care less about what happened to my ex

Anonymous
Yeah, makes sense, that is a rather effective method at leeching.

She cut contact with me after she received her PC and I told her that I wouldn't play tech support for her
Basically, she saw I was no longer "worth" anything to her, and so she cut me away

Anonymous
3:39 PM
Damn. What a sad state of events.

Anonymous
Start to finish. It really is just sad. The whole thing.

She did that to everyone around her. If you are of value to her, she keeps you around, if not, she cuts you out.
Yeah, and I fled into a fantasy that maybe one day she would recognize the virtues of leading a responsible life...but it was ultimately just fantasy
She will never work a day in her life
And all the stories she told me, about how her parents supposedly abused her, I don't believe any of them anymore

Anonymous
Yeah, I've also known people like that, that refuse to accept responsibility.

Because she lied to me so often, I can't believe anything she said

Anonymous
In-fact, I have one in my family. He is mid 30s, still living at home, no job, just goes to the pub and home.

3:41 PM
It's possible that some of it is true in one form or another, but I don't know what is

Anonymous
Did you ever actually meet her parents?

@J-- No, never

Anonymous
Oh right.

Anonymous
I was going to say, if you did, you could get a better indication of whether it is true or not, I guess.

She lived with her father, but back then, I believed that he was extremely abusive and so we planned that we picked her up while he was at work
And to be fair, the entire apartment was messy as fuck
So it seemed at least plausible at this time

Anonymous
3:43 PM
Yeah, makes sense.

Anonymous
She was messy though, right? Now you look back it was probably just her mess.

Anonymous
Its hard to know, I guess.

They both were pretty messy
my gf was messy in a weird way
She had an obsession with "cleaning" things

Anonymous
Did she actually say whether he was physically abusive or not? In my girlfriends case, she has lots of evidence of physical abuse, although she never actually told me. It was just obvious, but it is acceptable in her culture so, don't speak of it too much.

But she didn't clean things well
For example, when she said she'd "clean the apartment", she would just take things and put them into boxes, and those boxes into cupboards

Anonymous
3:45 PM
Oh right, okay.

There was no place where anything "belonged"

Anonymous
wtf.

She just placed things wherever there was space

Anonymous
That is very strange.

That's why I could never find anything
Yes, absolutely
That's why I bought a laser label printer
And labelled all the cupboards and such
But it didn't really help
She still just placed things wherever

Anonymous
3:46 PM
You met her online right?

Yes, I did

Anonymous
I think I asked before.

Anonymous
Yeah, thought so.

We met in Overwatch

Anonymous
@MechMK1 That is just so odd.

Anonymous
3:47 PM
Oh right, yeah I remember you saying some game.

Which is funny, because she began hating that game with a burning passion

Anonymous
I couldn't remember which one.

Because certain characters were "too erotic" for her
Like Mercy or D.Va

Anonymous
lol, wtf.

Anonymous
I think I mentioned it before, I knew my girlfriend from Twitch, lmfao.

3:48 PM

A very strange place to meet a girl since she likes spamming POGGERS and shit. Which is funny if you're a Twitch memer.

How is that too erotic?

I'm rarely ever on twitch

Anonymous
It is fully clothed.

I guess the fact that she has breasts
Or just generally that she's attractive

Anonymous
3:49 PM
@MechMK1 I used to moderate eSports events and stuff, so that's how I got really into it. Now I just mod a couple of big streamers but not often.

Anonymous
Yeah, seems like that is the only condition in her mind.

Anonymous
Far too busy for Twitch these days.

Anonymous
My girlfriend still watches the streamer we met from, though. A lot.

@J-- I did tell you about the story of us talking about "being an adult", right?

Anonymous
Hmm, I don't remember. Doesn't sound familiar.

3:50 PM
Yeah, I remember, forest was there too
About where I said I wanted to be in a relationship with a woman, not a 14 year old teenager

Anonymous
Wait, recently?

Yeah

Anonymous
Oh right, yes. Now I remember.

And she interpreted that as "Your breasts aren't big enough"

Anonymous
lmfao. My girlfriend doesn't even have any, not really anyways.

Anonymous
3:50 PM
I prefer it, honestly.

Anonymous
But what a weird way to take that sentence.

Anonymous
It is just so... Crazy.

Anonymous
Like, when you type these things out, they're just crazy.

Anonymous
I don't think almost anyone else would take it in that way.

Of course they are

Anonymous
3:52 PM
As you say, does fit the theme of schizophrenia...

Anonymous
Its very sad.

Another persistent thing is that she tried to talk things into reality
Like, she just claimed something and expected me to believe that it's true
"You know you haven't made any meaningful progress towards being more responsible ever since you've come here."
"Of course I did! Can't you see it?"

Anonymous
lol. I recall you talking before about her saying she was going to do some course for like 2 years straight without ever starting it, right?

Yes, exactly
One thing I basically forced her to do was to learn german
You can't live in austria without speaking german
That was not negotiable
And one day i came home and asked her if she learned german. She told me "Yes, for 8 hours"
I asked her to show me what she learned, and she just took the book and showed me random pages "I did this, I did that, I did this, I did that"
Then I took the book and asked her to do a dialogue exercise with me
She started to get angry, yelled at me "You always criticize me and never believe me anything!"

Anonymous
Reminds me of like, high school when you messed around for 45 minutes out of a 50 minute lesson and at the end they would go round and ask to give examples or answer questions and you'd just be like "fuck".

Anonymous
3:58 PM
@MechMK1 The craziest part is that she could have literally just got DuoLingo or something and done 20 minutes a day on an interactive app.

Anonymous
Like, it isn't like she had to read an entire dictionary and transcribe it.

@J-- I asked her to do Duolingo
And she even did, for a while

Anonymous
Learning languages is quite hard, but like, I use DuoLingo like 20 minutes a day and I am learning fast. No idea why she would think you expect her to study for 8 hours of german every day lmfao

Funny thing is, Duolingo tracks for how long you have learned every day
And every day I asked her if she learned, and she told me yes
Even though I could say she had 0 xp that day

Anonymous
