Hey, sorry if this is annoying but could I ask a question because I'm kind of shook rn but I feel like I don't know enough about security to ask it on the site without it being low quality
Basically I clicked a link and someone got my IP which I wouldn't feel to worried about but they also seemingly knew my system specs? Like my graphics card etc
Is this something justified to be as scared as I am or am I being dumb ;-;
and here at dmz is the best place to ask, not on security... it's a quick question with a quick answer
knowing your ip can reveal more or less the general geographic area you live, depending on how granular the addresses from your ISP are alloted
in my isp, you would know which state I do live, but for some ISPs it could find the neighborhood you are
you probably have a router connected to the ISP and it shares connectivity internally, so NAT more or less protects you. and that router probably have firewall (go there and see if it's enabled) that can protect you further
Tbh this is motivation to actually learn this stuff so that I'm not interacting with the medium for most communication in the modern world without a clue of what I'm doing, but I've yet to even start learning webdev stuff yet
No, they would have to have access to your browser cookies in order to abuse them to log into a site you left logged in. Merely knowing your public IP address would not allow them to log into any website. If you are asking this question though, I would not be so sure that there are "immense barri...
I wrote an answer to this sort of question a couple years ago, regarding IP "grabbing".
Well, thank you for the help! sorry for disrupting and asking trivial stuff, I was just sorta freaking out haha... I'll give that site you linked a read though! It's genuinely been a somewhat eye opening experience as to how clueless I actually am and that's the actual scary thing here tbh
No questions are bad questions! Just keep your OS and browser up to date, and you'll generally be safe from the kind of script kiddies who hang around those parts of the net.
I learned a teeny tiny bit a while ago but I just stopped when I'd reached the point where I could just use it do convenient bits i needed to do while studying phys
I also remember spending like 30 minutes confused as to why my code wasnt working when i actually tried making it only to realise that my python version was somehow a different one
COBOL (; an acronym for "common business-oriented language") is a compiled English-like computer programming language designed for business use. It is imperative, procedural and, since 2002, object-oriented. COBOL is primarily used in business, finance, and administrative systems for companies and governments. COBOL is still widely used in applications deployed on mainframe computers, such as large-scale batch and transaction processing jobs. However, due to its declining popularity and the retirement of experienced COBOL programmers, programs are being migrated to new platforms, rewritten in modern...
@MechMK1 Okay I think. It's been a crazy couple weeks. I gave a talk at a virtual conference a couple weeks ago, which was fun, and then we were also dealing with a (minor) data breach. Those things have kept me extra busy
Personal life has been crazy too. My wife has been having a hard time dealing with the fact that we had 2 miscarriages last year. Hopefully we'll have a new baby by the end of this year, but after two miscarriages there's no way to get through another pregnancy without being incredibly anxious the whole time, I suspectg
And we really need to find a good home, but finding a house that is large enough to fit a home office, 5+ kids and at least one in-law is... not easy (if you don't have a million dollars lying around)
Hopefully I'll get to the end of 2021 with at least 6 kids and a house that I'm happy with. Of course, that's really a lot to squeeze into one year, so... :/
With work anyway, this week should at least be less crazy. Preparing/giving a talk and then some extra work related to our incident kept me very busy the past couple weeks. I have some catching up to do as a result, but it should be a lot more "business as usual" now.
And of course I'm trying not to barf everytime I see a news article related to politics, but it's been like that for years now so nothing new there :)
today, the internet is down because our bellow-subprime ISP-issued router had a hardware failure, she complains that she cannot access the internet, and I said I was on the phone with the ISP, she didn't liked it
Did she dream I was cheating on her and she's going to act like I actually cheated on her? Will she get jealous over me because there was a woman in a meeting I attended? Or will she get mad at me because someone in TF2 is called "Hentai with Senpai"
my company headquarters in Brazil is in Sao Paulo... across the street there's a hotel from Accor, and they have special price for us, so when anyone from all branches have to spend some time at HQ, we book a room there.
your wife/gf/so/whatever can share the room with you, no problem... so one day we both were there, and when we were taking the elevator one girl from my company came out of it and greeted me because she was on the same department as me, but from another state
I look like a failed abortion attempt and my personality is...well, you've been exposed to enough of it already to be able to tell that a rotting rat carcass has more charm than me
and I had a computer too slow for simcity 2000, and one day I triple-clicked the icon and it worked, so from that day on I always triple-clicked the icon
@MechMK1 We have the opposite problem. My wife dreams that she has dreams where she cheated on me and then feels terrible all day...
@MechMK1 That's actually pretty sad. I have semi-regular conversations with my wife about whether or not various men/women are attractive, and for whatever reason I find these conversations amusing. I found a guy at my office in Slack that looks like he's a European Ken Doll converted into real life and I showed my wife a picture of him to see if he was as handsome as I thought he was (I'm bad at telling myself). I was mildly insulted when she started drooling over him :)
Although most of the men and women that she finds attractive are long dead, so that helps. If Cary Grant was still alive I might have some competition...
@ConorMancone The conversation went something like this
"What are you doing?" "Just playing Overwatch with <my friend>. Do you want to play with us?" "No, my friend asked me to play Dead by Daylight with him." "Okay, have fun with them" "Who are you playing as?" "D.Va" "Why?" "Because I like playing as her. She has a huge robot, what more is there to say?" "Do you think she's beautiful" "Yeah, she's pretty cute" "...I see." "Something wrong?" "Is she more beautiful than me?"
@ConorMancone So my girlfriend enjoyed playing Dead by Daylight, which is a game where four players (the survivors) need to run away from the killer. It's inspired by those classic horror movies like Friday the 13th, Halloween, etc...
So there is an item, the syringe, which can immediately revive a player to full health. Needless to say, it is VERY good
So one day, my girlfriend, my friend, I and a random person we didn't know played survivor together
I decided to bring a syringe with me
The game was about to end and the killer wasn't doing well - he couldn't catch any of us
So right as the game was about to end we were about to make our escape, the random got downed and I sprinted in, hit him with the syringe and revived him to full health
He ran out and took a hit for him, so we all made it.
I was really hyped, and my friend was really hyped too
her name was suellen, and there was a girl that I tried to date but failed named ellen, and suellen knew it... when we started dating she forbade me from calling her suellen because it reminds her of ellen, so I had to call her Su...
oh okay I don't have any questions but I was preparing a video for student exchange and thought about doing something else to take my mind off. Your story was very interesting by the way.
complaining time: my htinkpad t490 is great, but the heat vent is on the right hand, where my mouse usually is, and it's burning my hand... cpu is at 87C and really burns
I will fold some heavy paper and put on that side to redirect airflow up, or it can end up melting the rubber coating of my mouse
I got a very very cheap HP printer, cheaper than a new set of cartridges, and it does not have wifi - it would be asking too much... and it was inconvenient to have the printer on the desk all the time, as my desk is small and the printer is big
so I had a kinda of bookcase on the wall, and put it there, and got a tplink wr703n router for $15 a long time ago, flashed with openwrt
and now I have wifi printing... there's a myth that you can enable cups printing from android, but I am still to achieve that
@MechMK1 Other than the depression, you just described me when I was your age (assuming my estimate of your age is accurate). Oh, that and I never used gaming PCs: I had my x-box.
Highlights are: - Constant self doubt - Lack of motivation to do anything - Overwhelming sense you're not good enough for something - A looming sense that all of your friends simply put up with you out of pity or a sense of obligation, rather than genuinely enjoying your company - Believing that the world would be a better place without you
So yeah, all in all I'd give depression a 4 / 10. All in all, wouldn't want it again.
I'm starting to realize that I'm a very anti-social person. I've actually met someone here in town that I could be friends with (he has a kid who is the same age as two of mine, and so they have come over a few times). I've been thinking for weeks that I should text him and ask him to hang out. That's as far as I've gotten
so I maxed out intelligence, speed, got "never be able to gain weight" as a bonus power, so I can eat like a small family and maintain body mass index bellow 15
and I am barred from donating blood because of that
when there's a nasty issue a team is not being able to decypher, I usually know the answer, so most of the time I am called after the other people tried because I am basically the last resort
"Hey, I need you in a meeting?" "Why me?" "You're the only one in the company who can do it?" "What fucked up issue do you have that I of all people am the one person who can fix it? It's not related to Touhou, is it?" "No, .NET Code Reviews"
I wrote a bookmarklet and a php script, so if I see something interesting, I hit the bookmarklet, it send the URL to the php script, and it run archivebox... it takes the page and saves it, on html AND pdf versions... if there's a video, it calls youtube-dl to save it
paper not, pocket...
my wife was complaining that a site that she got recipes from went offline and she lost the recipes, so I set this up for her, created a bookmarklet, taught her to use it... and when I checked the archives to see how much space it's being used and how much she used it, there was only the pages I used to show her
I honestly set it up for her... I can lynx -dump > something, I can screenshot it with imagemagick, run tesseract and send the text to elasticsearch (ctrl-print screen does this), but she have trouble finding things
So, time for me to practice some guitar, followed by playing Endless Space 2, followed by dinner, followed by a bath, followed by daily suicidal thoughts, followed by neverending torturous nightmares, followed by a project kickoff meeting tomorrow
and I spend a lot of time searching for her, because she keeps things on her email, on google keep, evernote, downloads on the phone and chromebook, or keeps the tab open, and later wonders where is that thing
@ThoriumBR Oh yeah, that's true for European salaries as well... Let's all go hang out in South America! Sounds like Thorium is volunteering his house...
@ThoriumBR here most years vary from just under 0C to 22C. My happy range is about -20C to +18C. Scotland is mostly okay for me, sometimes a bit too warm. When I have had to work in Dubai or Munich in the summer I melt
@FireQuacker I seem to recall there was one famous case where that did happen - The Silk Road bust. Dread Pirate Roberts asked a number of questions on SE, and the logs helped
