1:50 AM
Hey, sorry if this is annoying but could I ask a question because I'm kind of shook rn but I feel like I don't know enough about security to ask it on the site without it being low quality
Basically I clicked a link and someone got my IP which I wouldn't feel to worried about but they also seemingly knew my system specs? Like my graphics card etc
Is this something justified to be as scared as I am or am I being dumb ;-;

don't worry

Sorry for my brainlet question

don't need to be sorry...
and here at dmz is the best place to ask, not on security... it's a quick question with a quick answer
knowing your ip can reveal more or less the general geographic area you live, depending on how granular the addresses from your ISP are alloted
in my isp, you would know which state I do live, but for some ISPs it could find the neighborhood you are
you probably have a router connected to the ISP and it shares connectivity internally, so NAT more or less protects you. and that router probably have firewall (go there and see if it's enabled) that can protect you further

thank you ;-;
It is, thank you for the reassurance
kind and gracious soul,,,
Tbh this is motivation to actually learn this stuff so that I'm not interacting with the medium for most communication in the modern world without a clue of what I'm doing, but I've yet to even start learning webdev stuff yet

@Phase Yeah there's really not much anyone can do with your IP.
You give out your IP to any site you connect to, anyway.

A: Can a hacker, that knows my IP address, remotely access accounts I have left logged in on my computer?

forestNo, they would have to have access to your browser cookies in order to abuse them to log into a site you left logged in. Merely knowing your public IP address would not allow them to log into any website. If you are asking this question though, I would not be so sure that there are "immense barri...

I wrote an answer to this sort of question a couple years ago, regarding IP "grabbing".

2:03 AM
I did see that, but I guess I was just dumb and assumed that they had somehow determined my specs from my IP haha,,,,
Instead of what was likely just the website also logging it somehow

Well there is sort of a way to determine specs using a tool called p0f (a TCP/IP fingerprinter).
But it's only really basic stuff like OS version.

I'd be interested to know how that actually happens though
Ah okay, they only mentioned my graphics card I guess I was just getting naenae'd

Yeah if it was graphics card then they either guessed it or found it out some other way.

You'd have thought I'd know not to click links on 4ch servers tbh
I think I'm just too trusting
:^(

4chan is not that scary. I'm an (ex?) 4channer. :P
They're not that sophisticated. Generally the worst they'd do is post ugly pictures.

2:05 AM
Oh yeah fr I've been using the site for like half a decade +
It's just I hadn't happened to actually bump into anyone malicious yet, probably because i just stick to like /s4s/ and other somewhat comfy boards

[s4s], longest april fools prank ever

kek

Fantastic board...

It really is. I'm an /a/non myself though, but I don't mind shitposting from time to time. :^)

2:08 AM
Well, thank you for the help! sorry for disrupting and asking trivial stuff, I was just sorta freaking out haha... I'll give that site you linked a read though! It's genuinely been a somewhat eye opening experience as to how clueless I actually am and that's the actual scary thing here tbh

No questions are bad questions! Just keep your OS and browser up to date, and you'll generally be safe from the kind of script kiddies who hang around those parts of the net.

I would keep my OS more up to date if it didn't feel like every time I let it update something breaks
:c

It's a necessary evil you have to go through. Hackers usually exploit outdated software.
At the very least, you can usually configure it to do security updates and ignore normal updates.

Oh, I didn't know that

Dozens of security bugs are fixed for each browser update, sometimes.

2:11 AM
I'm on windows 10 for.. some reason

Well it's better than Windows ME, I guess. I prefer Linux.

I genuinely do not know if there exists a person who likes the new version of the start button

I broke off from Windows and went nearly MS-free around XP.

I would go Linux if not for:
-I am brainlet
-I am brainlet and I like playing video games

I play Touhou and it works fine on *nix.
Also you can dual boot so you can have both OSes at once.

2:12 AM
please see point 1 x)

lel

I think I've only played imperishable night
was fun though

IN is wonderful. Best soundtrack in the series.

An ex got me into it and it's really nice
I feel kinda ashamed saying this but as well as liking 2hu music I also enjoy the like, 2hu bossa nova stuff

The music is one of the best parts about 2hu. Lots of great remixes.

2:14 AM
just so comfy

@Phase inb4 you're @MechMK1's gf

not yet,,,,

lel

The art is something

The fanart is some of the best there is. It has an amazing community.

2:15 AM
I dont know how a drawing of a girl with two right hands can still be comfy
Oh no not the fanart

Oh lmao Zun's QUALITY

I like the community of 2hu mostly
there are some.. weird folk though...

The weird folk are the best folk.

I.. idk if I agree...

Oh you mean the really weird folk.

2:18 AM
I've always felt sorta uncomfy with the waifu culture
considering the like, apparent age of the characters,,,

dont haet teh loli

;-;

Also all the 2hus are like, 2000 years old.

Okaye,,,
But yea
when my thigh highs and maid outfit arrive in the mail I think I'll finally be ready to learn programming

Programming is fun.
I think /g/ used to have daily threads teaching intro programming, years ago.

2:21 AM
I learned a teeny tiny bit a while ago but I just stopped when I'd reached the point where I could just use it do convenient bits i needed to do while studying phys

So Python I guess, then?

and it was python so uh...
yeah...

Yeah Python is a weird language. Powerful, but kind of weird. Screw semantic whitespace.

I just happened to pick it randomly

It's a good language. Quite powerful and very useful in the real world since it has so many libraries.

2:22 AM
and I didn't realise until after that in some languages printing hello world isnt just 1 line

#include <stdio.h>

void main(void)
{
    printf("Hello, world!\n");
}

I also remember spending like 30 minutes confused as to why my code wasnt working when i actually tried making it only to realise that my python version was somehow a different one

ouch

i didnt even know i downloaded both 2 and 3
but yeah as you can tell my brain is very smooth

The switch from 2 to 3 messed things up for a lot of people.

2:24 AM
the 300 hours of work i put in writing print "hello world"
completely invalidated by the new version,,
Monstrous and barbaric

aah my code block is borked
section .text
        global_start

_start:
        mov	edx,14
        mov	ecx,msg
        mov	ebx,1
        mov	eax,4
        syscall
        mov	eax,1
        syscall

section	.data
        msg db 'Hello, world!', 0xa
fix'd
But yeah Python hello world is easy compared to some other languages. :p

I had only just done like, lambda stuff when i quit
so safe to say i know nothing about it really

It's a very useful language if you do lots of physics simulations.
Fairly fast, powerful, good error handling and easy enough debugging.

idk tbh
issue with physicists
is their psychopathic attachment to fortran

heh
Well at least it's not COBOL.

2:32 AM
Never even heard of that tbh

It's an ancient language. Still used by some banks. Originally made for business db stuff.
COBOL (; an acronym for "common business-oriented language") is a compiled English-like computer programming language designed for business use. It is imperative, procedural and, since 2002, object-oriented. COBOL is primarily used in business, finance, and administrative systems for companies and governments. COBOL is still widely used in applications deployed on mainframe computers, such as large-scale batch and transaction processing jobs. However, due to its declining popularity and the retirement of experienced COBOL programmers, programs are being migrated to new platforms, rewritten in modern...

I've always felt like it's some sort of catharsis for the person passing it down
"I wasted my time learning this basically obsolete language so I'll be damned if you don't have to also"

I wouldn't be surprised. Though apparently it's a very fast language.

7 hours later…
9:43 AM
@forest Nah, my ex always hated Touhou with a burning passion

10:13 AM
@ConorMancone Hey, how've you been doing?

10:40 AM
@MechMK1 Okay I think. It's been a crazy couple weeks. I gave a talk at a virtual conference a couple weeks ago, which was fun, and then we were also dealing with a (minor) data breach. Those things have kept me extra busy
Personal life has been crazy too. My wife has been having a hard time dealing with the fact that we had 2 miscarriages last year. Hopefully we'll have a new baby by the end of this year, but after two miscarriages there's no way to get through another pregnancy without being incredibly anxious the whole time, I suspectg
And we really need to find a good home, but finding a house that is large enough to fit a home office, 5+ kids and at least one in-law is... not easy (if you don't have a million dollars lying around)
Hopefully I'll get to the end of 2021 with at least 6 kids and a house that I'm happy with. Of course, that's really a lot to squeeze into one year, so... :/

@ConorMancone That's understandable. I hope you and your wife can deal with it well
@ConorMancone Yeah, that is a big goal. I wish you all the best, really.

11:00 AM
With work anyway, this week should at least be less crazy. Preparing/giving a talk and then some extra work related to our incident kept me very busy the past couple weeks. I have some catching up to do as a result, but it should be a lot more "business as usual" now.
And of course I'm trying not to barf everytime I see a news article related to politics, but it's been like that for years now so nothing new there :)
How is Austria doing?

1 hour later…
12:09 PM
@ConorMancone Eh, lockdown keeps getting extended
Still not able to go to restaurants or work in a proper office

lockdown is extended here too
I wasn't the most social guy on the office, and this extended period locked home is making things well worse

12:24 PM
Yeah, it's just so lonely
I feel so lonely all the time

kids resume school tomorrow, we have a school meeting in person this afternoon

@ThoriumBR Glad to hear that
At least, when you have family around, you still have people to talk to and interact with

school meetings are always boring, but I have to go, not looking forward to it a bit...
@MechMK1 I don't know if that's an upside...

What wouldn't I give to have a school meeting
@ThoriumBR Try spending a year basically in isolation

did that a decade ago for half an year... wasn't so bad

12:29 PM
It completely fucks me over

minor depression melts all days into a blob so a week or three months feels the same

Yeah, basically
I feel like I am re-living the same day over and over
What a shitty day tho

my day is "what will I mess up and my wife will be mad at me today?"...

That's what my life with my ex was like
"Oh boy, I can't wait for what thing - real or imagined - she will be mad at me today?"

today, the internet is down because our bellow-subprime ISP-issued router had a hardware failure, she complains that she cannot access the internet, and I said I was on the phone with the ISP, she didn't liked it
so today will be another bad day

12:32 PM
Did she dream I was cheating on her and she's going to act like I actually cheated on her?
Will she get jealous over me because there was a woman in a meeting I attended?
Or will she get mad at me because someone in TF2 is called "Hentai with Senpai"

my company headquarters in Brazil is in Sao Paulo... across the street there's a hotel from Accor, and they have special price for us, so when anyone from all branches have to spend some time at HQ, we book a room there.

Lucky you
I can't really see any of my co-workers anymore

your wife/gf/so/whatever can share the room with you, no problem... so one day we both were there, and when we were taking the elevator one girl from my company came out of it and greeted me because she was on the same department as me, but from another state

I just have long, drawn-out calls with them

that was 8 years ago or more, and my wife still talks about that 3 seconds when a girl she don't know greeted me on the elevator
just a "business-grade" greeting...

12:37 PM
Man, I'm sorry
Like the one time I said D.Va from overwatch was cute
Worst mistake of my life

one of my teammates is a woman and we worked together a lot on mid-2020... she was working on the field before I was born
my wife keeps asking about her... she could be my grandma, I think her daughter would consider herself too old for me...

Jesus...
You know what I find weird? That my ex thought other women could be into me

hahaha... got this too

That sounds like my ex, too (all the MechMK1 examples apply).

I look like a failed abortion attempt and my personality is...well, you've been exposed to enough of it already to be able to tell that a rotting rat carcass has more charm than me

12:42 PM
this vacations she told me after paying the toll: "that girl from the toll both thinks you are cute"
I seriously doubt it, but even if was true, it wasn't my fault

This is so depressing
Makes me wonder why my brain is wired to desire a relationship when I've only ever made horrible experiences with relationships

me too

I really hate my brain
What a broken piece of shit. Should have installed Linux when I had the chance

1:01 PM
I would be happy with ms-dos... or whatever came with my nokia 6110
tucows download site is shutting down...

1:14 PM
@ThoriumBR wow - that takes me back. I don't think I have looked at tucows since maybe 1998

I used to download sample visual basic programs from there
back then it was hard to create a product and pay hosting for it... if it was successful, it could bankrupt you paying hosting fees
so tucows, shareware.com, lycos, jumbo and others were the place you would host your software

Man, the nostalgia is weird
I remember the time when I knew nothing about computers and my dad told me if I ever clicked on the WinZip program, I'd destroy the computer.
It always seemed odd to me that the computer had a Self-Destruct button built in

and I had a computer too slow for simcity 2000, and one day I triple-clicked the icon and it worked, so from that day on I always triple-clicked the icon

1:29 PM
I was always fascinated by the IE logo in the top right corner
I always tried clicking it, wondering if it was going to do something

I liked the comets falling on the netscape logo

2:10 PM
I liked the explanations of what are cookies according to Netscape: "Cookies are delicious delicacies".

@MechMK1 We have the opposite problem. My wife dreams that she has dreams where she cheated on me and then feels terrible all day...
@MechMK1 That's actually pretty sad. I have semi-regular conversations with my wife about whether or not various men/women are attractive, and for whatever reason I find these conversations amusing. I found a guy at my office in Slack that looks like he's a European Ken Doll converted into real life and I showed my wife a picture of him to see if he was as handsome as I thought he was (I'm bad at telling myself). I was mildly insulted when she started drooling over him :)
Although most of the men and women that she finds attractive are long dead, so that helps. If Cary Grant was still alive I might have some competition...

@ConorMancone The conversation went something like this

"What are you doing?"
"Just playing Overwatch with <my friend>. Do you want to play with us?"
"No, my friend asked me to play Dead by Daylight with him."
"Okay, have fun with them"
"Who are you playing as?"
"D.Va"
"Why?"
"Because I like playing as her. She has a huge robot, what more is there to say?"
"Do you think she's beautiful"
"Yeah, she's pretty cute"
"...I see."
"Something wrong?"
"Is she more beautiful than me?"

And it began

@ConorMancone Yeah i walked right into that one
But i don't get it. I never ever thought to ask he something like that with the intention of starting a fight

Sounds like some issues with insecurity, but it's impossible to say anything from here

Absolutely yeah
The problem was, she lived in a delusional world
Where she found a post of a guy who happened to have the same first name as me, congratulating a woman named jessica on her 21st birthday
So she called me at work and asked "Who is Jessica?"
Like...imagine your wife calling you at work, asking "Who is Jessica?" because a man named Conor Greene congratulated Jessica Terry on her birthday
This is what my life looked like for 5 years
You see, it conditions you to fear every interaction with every person
Did I ever tell you the story of when we played Dead by Daylight together?

Nope, so go for it

@ConorMancone So my girlfriend enjoyed playing Dead by Daylight, which is a game where four players (the survivors) need to run away from the killer. It's inspired by those classic horror movies like Friday the 13th, Halloween, etc...
So there is an item, the syringe, which can immediately revive a player to full health. Needless to say, it is VERY good

2:37 PM
Hello

So one day, my girlfriend, my friend, I and a random person we didn't know played survivor together
I decided to bring a syringe with me
The game was about to end and the killer wasn't doing well - he couldn't catch any of us
So right as the game was about to end we were about to make our escape, the random got downed and I sprinted in, hit him with the syringe and revived him to full health
He ran out and took a hit for him, so we all made it.
I was really hyped, and my friend was really hyped too
"Oh my god, we all made it! That was so awesome!"

I can guess where this is going...

Then in the chat, the random wrote "omg jake thank you <3" (jake was the name of the character I was playing)

@MuhammadAliKhan Hello!

2:39 PM
You wouldn't believe the fit she was throwing
"Do you know her?! Who is she?! Why did you help her?! Why is she sending you a heart?!"

@MechMK1 damn

It really made me dread playing with her, to the point where I straight up refused to play any multiplayer games with her for weeks
Simply because I didn't want my day ruined by random, innocuous things strangers did or said

looks like my first gf...

Yeah, you really can't have a functional relationship without trust

I just tried chat.stackexchange first time entered this room and started reading MK1 gf story.

2:41 PM
her name was suellen, and there was a girl that I tried to date but failed named ellen, and suellen knew it... when we started dating she forbade me from calling her suellen because it reminds her of ellen, so I had to call her Su...

@MuhammadAliKhan Well, the SE chatrooms are usually off-topic
@ThoriumBR fuuuuck...
@MuhammadAliKhan Feel free to butt in with any question or such you may have

I never saw any girl jealous of her own name

Jealousy is so toxic
Like envy, I get it - we all feel envious at times
But her jealousy was so consistent, and FOR NO FUCKING REASON
Like, I didn't give her any reason to be jealous
I didn't go out drinking every weekend with my 5 different female friends
But the more I tried to appease her jealousy, the more jealous she became

oh okay
I don't have any questions but I was preparing a video for student exchange and thought about doing something else to take my mind off. Your story was very interesting by the way.

complaining time: my htinkpad t490 is great, but the heat vent is on the right hand, where my mouse usually is, and it's burning my hand... cpu is at 87C and really burns
I will fold some heavy paper and put on that side to redirect airflow up, or it can end up melting the rubber coating of my mouse

2:47 PM
@ThoriumBR Yeah, I have a T480 and heat is really an issue

I forgot a large chocolate bar at the right side, and when I got it to eat, was chocolate juice

I don't have any gf stories because my wife was the first person I ever dated. So my gf story is simply, "I didn't have one until I was 26"

@ThoriumBR Getting a cooling pad can be a solution.

@MuhammadAliKhan I am thinking on stashing it under the table and using external monitor and keyboard
but I don't have a monitor

@ThoriumBR I have a similar setup with a mouse and keyboard sans monitor but my mouse is not near the air vent.

2:53 PM
@ConorMancone Lucky you

@MechMK1 Didn't feel that way at the time :)

I got a very very cheap HP printer, cheaper than a new set of cartridges, and it does not have wifi - it would be asking too much... and it was inconvenient to have the printer on the desk all the time, as my desk is small and the printer is big
so I had a kinda of bookcase on the wall, and put it there, and got a tplink wr703n router for $15 a long time ago, flashed with openwrt
and now I have wifi printing... there's a myth that you can enable cups printing from android, but I am still to achieve that

@ConorMancone Look at you, you have a loving wife and a lot of kids, a stable job too
What do I have? A gaming PC and depression

I don't have the PC, but got the kids and the job

Yeah
Trust me, the GTX 1080Ti isn't worth it

3:01 PM
my gaming device is a t430... yeah, laugh all you want... the upside is that I buy my games at $5 each!

@ThoriumBR Unironically based
modern games are shit anyways

this weekend I was playing Mass Effect 1

@MechMK1 Other than the depression, you just described me when I was your age (assuming my estimate of your age is accurate). Oh, that and I never used gaming PCs: I had my x-box.

There's a reason I sunk hundreds of hours in to indie games
@ConorMancone The depression isn't that nice anyways, you can do without

it's from from 2007! wow! time flies!

3:04 PM
Highlights are:
- Constant self doubt
- Lack of motivation to do anything
- Overwhelming sense you're not good enough for something
- A looming sense that all of your friends simply put up with you out of pity or a sense of obligation, rather than genuinely enjoying your company
- Believing that the world would be a better place without you

So yeah, all in all I'd give depression a 4 / 10. All in all, wouldn't want it again.

that's me from 2007...
and that time I had a gaming PC, broke up with my girlfriend and was living alone

Mass effect isn't the worst way to spend your time, I guess

some days I challenged myself to get out and speak to a stranger, or I would have to throw away a chocolate bar that I loved...
it worked because I cheated... I went to the mall to eat and had to choose the food

Yeah, I wish I had developed some social skills when I was younger

I was always the nerdy guy, social skills were on the page 2 of the character creation tab and I didn't noticed it until half way the main quest

3:10 PM
@ThoriumBR Same. Dumped all stats in...I don't actually know

I'm starting to realize that I'm a very anti-social person. I've actually met someone here in town that I could be friends with (he has a kid who is the same age as two of mine, and so they have come over a few times). I've been thinking for weeks that I should text him and ask him to hang out. That's as far as I've gotten

I feel bad for the mods who look at the DMZ and just see pure depression unfold

so I maxed out intelligence, speed, got "never be able to gain weight" as a bonus power, so I can eat like a small family and maintain body mass index bellow 15
and I am barred from donating blood because of that

I wish I could say I maxed out int, but my IQ is ~100

my is ~140 last time I checked it, during the tests and interviews to join my company in 2008-ish...

3:12 PM
Fucking hell I'm basically a brainlet

now you see why I have 0 points on social skills...

Rare picture of MechMK1 leaked

haha... I disagree... you need to be smart to be a pentester

See, the problem is that I'm a fucking idiot. But not the lovable kind of simpleton, more like the really annoying kind
@ThoriumBR There is literally nothing smart about just filling in a checklist
I don't find cool 0 days or such

I am the "was thoriumbr in the room? never noticed..."

3:15 PM
More like "Oh look, if I type <script>alert(1)</script> an alert pops up

when there's a nasty issue a team is not being able to decypher, I usually know the answer, so most of the time I am called after the other people tried because I am basically the last resort

Reminds me of a conversation I had a few days ago

I spend so much time messing with my countless small servers that debugging things is second nature to me...

"Hey, I need you in a meeting?"
"Why me?"
"You're the only one in the company who can do it?"
"What fucked up issue do you have that I of all people am the one person who can fix it? It's not related to Touhou, is it?"
"No, .NET Code Reviews"

this weekend before mass effect I was installing archivebox on a cubietruck running ubuntu... took me 4 hours, but it's kinda working

3:17 PM
@ThoriumBR Nice

archivebox is a nice piece of software... it's a self host Paper, that extension from firefox

I don't know what Paper does

I wrote a bookmarklet and a php script, so if I see something interesting, I hit the bookmarklet, it send the URL to the php script, and it run archivebox... it takes the page and saves it, on html AND pdf versions... if there's a video, it calls youtube-dl to save it
paper not, pocket...
my wife was complaining that a site that she got recipes from went offline and she lost the recipes, so I set this up for her, created a bookmarklet, taught her to use it... and when I checked the archives to see how much space it's being used and how much she used it, there was only the pages I used to show her

@ThoriumBR At some point you have to realize you just set this up for the sake of setting it up

I honestly set it up for her... I can lynx -dump > something, I can screenshot it with imagemagick, run tesseract and send the text to elasticsearch (ctrl-print screen does this), but she have trouble finding things

3:24 PM
@ThoriumBR I know that feeling... That's happened to several projects I did at work

So, time for me to practice some guitar, followed by playing Endless Space 2, followed by dinner, followed by a bath, followed by daily suicidal thoughts, followed by neverending torturous nightmares, followed by a project kickoff meeting tomorrow
Have a good one, folks!

and I spend a lot of time searching for her, because she keeps things on her email, on google keep, evernote, downloads on the phone and chromebook, or keeps the tab open, and later wonders where is that thing
@MechMK1 you too

@MechMK1 Despite how it seems, these things are temporary! Come work remotely from the US for a while. Less restrictions in many places :)

@ConorMancone I would like to, but my monthly paycheck would last a week...
@MechMK1 come work remote on Brazil, your paycheck would pay for a month living here, you would be the king of the beach

3:50 PM
@ThoriumBR Oh yeah, that's true for European salaries as well... Let's all go hang out in South America! Sounds like Thorium is volunteering his house...

there's enough space for a lot of people here

@ThoriumBR I did enjoy Chile when I was there. Tierra Del Fuego is an amazing part of the world
and wonderfully empty of people

Tierra del Fuego is amazing (by the pictures I saw)
here you guys would face 27C-31C and humidity on the single digits
but it's way better than 31C with humidity on the upper 80's

@ThoriumBR waaaay too hot for me. Here was -6C yesterday, and we went swimming in the loch again (after breaking the ice) :-p

I just left behind Florida which gets a bit hotter than that, and basically just has 100% humidity year round.

4:04 PM
here going bellow 15C is unheard of, on average it's 21C-27C all year
humidity is 50% or less most of the time

I wouldn't mind 31C right now. I get cold when it gets to 10C, so even though this winter has been mild, I'm still cold
