@J.J The spirits of your ancestors say... "Kid, YOU CALL THIS A BREAKFAST? SHAME UPON YOUR COW"
(I kid. I will not judge your breakfast)
I had bread, good cheddar, whatever halaumi cheese that was left over pan fried, sauted mushrooms and more cheese

Q: Protect public(?) API endpoints

EcazI'm building a fairly simple web application at the moment but because I have plans on turning this into sort of a multi-project portfolio app, I've decided to decouple the back-end and the front-end. That way I can easily integrate my other projects into this front-end. At the moment I have a p...

@MechMK1 I'm 90% sure that they are just doing a test exercise there... scary thought though
although as my 12 year old likes to say too much, "When you have only seconds to live, the police are only minutes away!"

I wanna do my bachelor thesis around offensive security. I've got some good ideas for defensive like analysis of a malware and risk analysis and defense against some attack(s). I'm kinda struggling to get a good topic for a thesis on offensive and hacking. Can you give me some ideas for topics?

4:39 PM
There's a lot of subject (spectre, rowhammer, cold attack) that are still not really exploitable. Find a way to improve on of them
Other good topic: Vulnerability on neural network

I'd like to get some information on how DRM CDM's work. I am unable to find much information on the web.
There is some general information about Content Decryption Module (CDMs) and such but how it actually works seems to be a mystery. I suspect much of DRM is security through obscurity. Is this accurate?
From what I have read, files are encrypted using AES an then is decrypted by the CDM client side. Client must have they key.....so all I/someone with more skill got to do is edit the assembly of the CDM and they should be able to access to key.
There maybe another layer of obfuscation but it seems pretty easy to crack.
I'll just ask on main site. Probably better anyway.

@JohnZhau If I'm being honest this is more of a rant than an actual response, but anyway: everyone is always very focused on offensive security but misses out on the equally important defensive security. I think this is because offensive security is so flashy and hacks get a lot of attention. However, for every time data is leaked because a hacker broke in, there are 5 cases where some data was left exposed on the internet for everyone because of a silly defensive mistake
To be clear, I'm exaggerating when I claim a 5:1 ratio, but the reality is that roughly half of all breaches happen due to internal actors. In short, good defensive security techniques are the only way to mitigate half of all actual breaches.
So, how about a thesis on defensive security? :p

Q: How does Widevine, FairPlay, and other DRM's work under the hood?

JBisI am trying to understand how DRM works under the hood. There doesn't seem to be much information about it on the web so I figured I would ask here. After some attempted research, I found it extremely difficult to find any information regarding how Widevine or FairPlay DRM actually works. There...

5:36 PM
@JBis Is there anything you'd like to talk about or are you just trying to get free advertising for your question?
@ConorMancone If they don't take it serious, it fails as an exercise. If this is the best she can give, she fails as policeman.
@J.J The discussion regarding feeling offended on behalf of others

6:07 PM
@MechMK1 That is an excellent and very scary point!

@MechMK1 I was originally going to ask here but then decided to create a question so I posted it here to direct anyone reading my messages from the chat to that question. Also free advertising ;)

@J.J It's the food of the gods/bears
If I could only eat one food for the rest of my life it would be cheese. I have 11 cheeses in the fridge right now
Nomnomnom
10 cheeses in the fridge right now - and one in my hand

10 cheeses in the fridge and one in my belly

Mmmmm... I love cheese so much... however one of my Christmas presents to my wife was to eat an entirely plant-based diet this year. Therefore I find your comment offensive.
(I'm a pot stirrer)
(everything but the last part of that comment was true)

7:39 PM
@ConorMancone wow - good commitment. I couldn't do it - I do like vegetarian foods (when we go on tour, because our bassist is vegetarian we tend to eat at places that do awesome veg food) but I luuurve meats too much
Also, hang on - cheese is kinda plant based
Well, it's not harmful to cows
(as long as it's from a proper dairy)

7:53 PM
@RoryAlsop Unlike me, my wife has been a dirty hippie for a long time. She started converting me after we got married (almost a decade ago - I used to make fun of vegetarians in college). We've eaten a more-or-less plant-based diet for quite a while though, so it isn't really much of a change. The only actual change is that I no longer snack on the cheese that is occasionally found in the house...
It's for a number of reasons, including environmental, animal kindness, and general health. All three rule out cheese :) Although to be fair the case is less clear for cheesing being especially bad for general health if eaten in appropriate quantities. I still loooove meat (especially cows - my favorite animal), but we very rarely eat it anyway, so...

@ConorMancone As I'm an older person, my employer sends me for health checks every year. Turns out I have the good cheese gene - I eat copious amounts of it, and have an incredibly low level of the bad cholesterol, andthe right amount of the good one
So I'm sticking with it

8:11 PM
Mmmmmmm.... cheese...
