6:35 AM
@BenoitEsnard VeraCrypt is nice

1 hour later…
Anonymous
7:53 AM
This sounds like a good question for @forest @BenoitEsnard

Anonymous
Funny story; yesterday a friend of mine heard A Little Piece of Heaven by Avenged Sevenfold for the first time and it's safe to say she was beyond mortified with the lyrics lmfao.

Anonymous
If you've never heard that song, I highly recommend it, or at least giving the lyrics a quick look over - they are probably a little too dark for me to post here.

Anonymous
The best part was how her face got visibly more and more disgusted by the words lmfao. It started out and to be honest, even the first few words are pretty dark, but she coped with that.

Anonymous
It was the verse before the first chorus that set her off lmfao.

8:15 AM
[MechMK1 is now listening to "Hammer Smashed Face" - "Cannibal Corpse"]

Anonymous
Hahahhahaha.

Anonymous
I have not got her listening to heavy stuff yet @MechMK1

Anonymous
She was under the assumption that it was only death metal which had "dark" lyrics, she was really wrong.

Anonymous
But, she does like a few metalcore bands now, she isn't overly fond of the screaming but she said it's worth it to hear some of the guitars so that's cool.

Anonymous
I'm going to get her to listen to something a little heavier next I think.

8:20 AM
To be fair, Cannibal Corpse is on the "brutal for the sake of being brutal" side of things

Anonymous
Now I have ALPOH stuck in my head.

Anonymous
hums must've stabbed he....

I keep listening to "Er Gegen Sich", which is basically "/pol/ - The Song"

Anonymous
:D And yes, they are.

Anonymous
I want to find her something which is heavy but less words since she doesn't like the screaming.

Anonymous
8:21 AM
So she's not going to like any death metal, I guess melodic deathmetal she might enjoy.

Anonymous
I'll have to find something :D

Anonymous
The song I am playing on repeat right now @MechMK1 is MakeThemSuffer - Neverbloom.

Nice

Anonymous
I love that song.

Anonymous
Even though you "can't hear the words".

Anonymous
8:22 AM
To be fair, you can't. Low growls are kinda' almost pointless - don't @ me.

Anonymous
Oh, I also discovered a new band - Happy Hour. They have a song called Cigarettes, I must've listened to it like 30 times in the last 2 days.

I recently got more into Progmetal, like Elder

Anonymous
I don't think I have listened to much of them.

Anonymous
I tend to listen to a lot of deathcore, hardcore and "girlcore". (The latter being metalcore).

8:25 AM
The opening riff is so cool

Anonymous
I get a lot of hate from metal fans for listening to metalcore.

I'm not so much into *core

Anonymous
But... Fuck 'em.

I think that's wrong. Music is an act of self-expression. Any music is legitimate.

Anonymous
Oh, I also listen to nu-metal now & then.

8:26 AM
I don't like metalcore that much, but I get why people like it and I respect it

Anonymous
But it's hard to find decent nu-metal bands because it kinda' died out.

Yeah, Nu-Metal was a thing of the 00's

Anonymous
Well, a lot of metalcore music is the same; I think it gets a lot of hate because of labels like RiseRecords, etc.

Anonymous
Which, I understand. Half of the stuff on there is exactly the same.

But as you said, it did really die out,and I felt it didn't have that much of a lasting impact. It's like in the end, it didn't even matter

Anonymous
8:27 AM
But, there are a lot of metalcore bands which really go beyond just singing about girls breaking their heart.

Anonymous
@MechMK1 Oh yeah nu-metal died pretty fast.

Anonymous
The only successful nu-metal band to survive nu-metal dying were LP.

Anonymous
And I partly put that down to the fact they had so many fan girls.

Anonymous
Their new stuff was let's face it, pretty dreadful.

@J.J Any musical genre needs thematic variety, or else it'll die out of oversaturation

Anonymous
8:28 AM
Yeah, I agree.

@J.J The first 3 albums were great. Hybrid Theory, Reanimation and Meteora had substance, the rest was just...bland

Anonymous
But I guess the point is that metalcore does have a lot more oversaturation than other metal genres, I would say.

Anonymous
I agree.

That's why I like folk metal: You can put in so much stuff, so much thematic variety.

Anonymous
I mean, of course there are other blends of metal which do suffer from severe oversaturation but I would say metalcore specifically has a lot more than other blends.

Anonymous
8:30 AM
Mostly because metalcore is so easily reproducible.

Just pick Korpiklaani: "Cottages and Saunas", "Shaman Drum", "Crows Bring the Spring", ...

Anonymous
A lot more reproducible than other popular blends at least.

@J.J Yes, sadly. Just chop up a generic riff, put in deep growls and high screams, etc...

Anonymous
I mean, I could make a metalcore song right now and it'd sound pretty much just as good as 99% of metalcore songs.

Anonymous
Yeah exactly.

Anonymous
8:31 AM
Generic riff, a heavy breakdown

Anonymous
Split the music verse, verse, chorus, breakdown, verse, chorus, heavy breakdown

Yeah, absolutely. Because the race to be "as heavy as possible" doesn't give you any room to express yourself individually

Anonymous
Throw some mid screams in the middle of the chorus

Anonymous
Make sure the lyrics are about getting hurt by a girl - you have yourself a metalcore song.

And the theme: My girlfriend broke my heart. We loved each other so much, but then she left me. Ohhh, the pain. ohh, I can't go on anymore. [deep growl] THIS IS THE END.

Anonymous
8:32 AM
^

Anonymous
That's all of metalcore, yup.

Anonymous
Which I find fascinating that metalcore fans refuse to accept it.

Well, metalcore is what it is.

Anonymous
I am a metalcore fan, but I am not so offended that I would try and defend that point.

Anonymous
I understand why other metal fans don't like it.

Anonymous
8:33 AM
It's the same reason people didn't like the 2008 hardcore scene.

I mean it's fine sometimes

Anonymous
Because it was 90% copy paste tracks.

I'm not so into the "this is my genre I love everything about it every criticism is invalid"

Anonymous
Even my favourite band (ADTR) were pretty much copy pasting tracks.

Anonymous
But they made it out of that scene and are more popular than ever before.

8:34 AM
I mean, Tool is one of my favourite bands of all time and I don't like all of their songs

Anonymous
Because they actually put in effort to be different.

I have many bands which I really like: Wintersun, Children of Bodom, Korpiklaani, etc...
And all of them have a bunch of songs I just don't listen to

Anonymous
It's very rare that I will like everything a band has done.

Anonymous
And for good reason; if I like everything that means the band has probably, likely never changed their style.

@J.J Usually only if they just did one album and that was extremely similar
I mean S09M released an album with 2 songs, and I only like one of them :D

Anonymous
8:35 AM
There is one band I do love everything they've made so far and that's Amity Affliction.

Anonymous
And they have grown from deathmetal, into metalcore, crossing into some modern nu-metal

I don't know them, but I assume they're metalcore

Anonymous
And they do it so fucking well.

Anonymous
They're metalcore but I would say

Anonymous
They have a lot of variety

8:37 AM
Sounds nice. Recently I listen to a lot of Übermensch

Anonymous
Some tracks are really kinda EDM heavy, lots of electro tones

Anonymous
And some tracks are really just guitar, bass, drums and cleans with breakdowns, it's a super nice mix.

I actually listen to EDM as well, especially Melodic Dubstep or Psytrance

Anonymous
Yeah, Amity Affliction & Issues are really good at mixing electro tones into their music.

Anonymous
It adds a lot more variety to the whole metal thing, I like it.

Anonymous
It's kinda' nu-metalish it's nice.

Like this one. Very high energy

Anonymous
Yeah, I quite like things like this. Although I am more of a fan of D&B.

Anonymous
I love D&B, it was the first genre I discovered outside of metal.

D&B is fine too, but I prefer something melodic

Anonymous
8:39 AM
Yeah, fair enough.

Same with other EDM genres. I need me some melody

Anonymous
The only thing I have a problem with in music is talentless musicians.

That's why I love Au5's work. He mixes melody in sooo well

Anonymous
And I put a lot of that down to shitty record labels more than the musicians themselves.

@MechMK1 you may enjoy Dog Tired. Friends of mine from a village about 10 miles away. Here's an early one (Matallica-like intro, then gets heavier :-)

8:40 AM
I have no problem with talentless musicians. I have a problem with musicians who don't care about music.

Anonymous
Yeah, I think that's what I meant.

@RoryAlsop Lemme just star that because I am at work and can't listen right now :(

Anonymous
Like, for some reason people seem to think I don't listen to anything outside of metal, there's a lot of music I like.

@J.J Because I'd rather take a band that can't play for shit and tries their hardest to put on a good show than a semi-talented musician who just cares about making cash

Anonymous
But the only reason I find it hard to find music outside of metal is because there's lot of musicians that just don't care.

Anonymous
8:41 AM
Don't get me wrong, there is that inside metal too, but I think/believe it's less common.

Glenn Fricker is a recording engineer who focusses on making metal records and he has his fair share of musicians who don't give a fuck at all.

Anonymous
@RoryAlsop Everyone here will probably want to shoot me but I think Metallica could win an award for being one of the most successful overrated bands of all time.

He was so pissed off that he started a YouTube channel to explain to people how the fuck to get their band ready for the studio.

Anonymous
Metallica made a few good songs. Somehow, those good songs were so good that it propelled them into crushing the scene even if they were making shitty ones.

@J.J they have been very hit and miss. I loved the way they helped change music - opening up heavier riffs to a wider audience etc., and I did like their early stuff. I even like a few of their later songs. But yeah, a lot is boring, rote based nonsense

Anonymous
8:43 AM
@MechMK1 I'll have to check him out. I quite like most of Jared Dines content. He's a guy that clearly loves music.

> You might ask "But Glenn, isn't showing up on time and paying your bills normal? Why are you telling us that?" and to that I would say "Yeah, you would fucking think so! But apparently some musicians think that starting at 10:00 am means getting out of bed at 10:00 am"
@J.J Yes, but JD's content got soooo much worse over the years

Anonymous
I'm glad you agree @RoryAlsop I find it really a huge piss take that some metal heads will defend them to death.

We used to get so many compliments for showing up on time, being ready, knowing what we were going to play, doing it, then tidying up

Anonymous
It's like, okay I get it - they did a lot for our genre, I don't disagree.

Back then when he did lots of covers and such, I loved his channel. But now it's just mostly "Djent <current year>" and "Musicians react to metal memes"

Anonymous
8:44 AM
But the way people go on about them it's like a cult I hate it.

Unpopular opinion: Metallica is good, but really overrated.

Anonymous
@MechMK1 Pretty much everyone's YT content got worse over the years, I put it down to the fact that if you want to make a living from YT you need to follow shitty trends and clickbait for views.

@J.J Even my favourite bands have written some crap. Nobody's perfect. I have some bands who I will always go and see because the majority of their stuff is good, and Metallica were always great live

@J.J To that I say one word: iDubbbzTV

Anonymous
8:45 AM
@MechMK1 They are. I have the same feelings about Rammstein (I can never spell it from memory)

Oh, also for later - a more recent Dog Tired song:

Anonymous
Like Metallica they have a huge following but... They're not THAT good.

@J.J They are another amazing band live though

Anonymous
I agree.

@J.J You spelled it correctly. And I never got the Rammstein hype. I guess it's the novelty of them being german?

8:46 AM
ANd more than 50% of their stuff is good

Anonymous
I hear great things about them live.

Anonymous
I just think, hugely overrated.

Anonymous
Maybe I am just miserable though. Or maybe I just don't like when things become over popularised.

I managed to get front row at one of their huge festival gigs - almost came back with no eyebrows

Reminds me of the drummer of metallica playing a simple thing wrong and the singer lost his shit :D
Let me look that up

8:47 AM
@MechMK1 hahahaha -yes

Anonymous
I think I've seen this video before, haha.

Anonymous
Unpopular opinion: DragonForce are technically very good but their music sucks.

Anonymous
By technically I mean, technically as in talent.

@J.J they are not even as technically good as many think. Live they really suck - seen them twice
In the studio, yes, they get everything right
on stage... not so much

Anonymous
8:48 AM
For me, that's a huge factor.

Anonymous
If they are bad live... It's a yikes.

Reminds me of Arctic Monkeys
I saw them live twice

Anonymous
Don't get me wrong, I love A Day to Remember BUT - Jeremy can't sing live.

The first time they were amazing, the second time...not so much. They were clearly very drunk

Anonymous
He. Is. So. Awful. He sounds like a fucking walrus.

Anonymous
8:49 AM
I mean for me it's not much of a problem, I cannot go to live music.

I usually prefer the studio version too. Live music is really a gamble

@J.J first time I saw Guns n Roses they were pretty bad. Faith No More and Soundgarden were supporting them and were way better. Axl was just shockingly off his face

I've seen Ensiferum live, and they were really good. Turisas as well!

@MechMK1 Turisas really blew me away live

But sometimes the people around you just ruin your evening

Anonymous
8:50 AM
@RoryAlsop Yeah but he is just a c*nt.

@RoryAlsop The voice of that guy, HOLY SHIT

Anonymous
He always has been

Anonymous
He always will be.

Anonymous
He's gotta' be one of the most arrogant musicians to grace Earth.

@J.J The singer of Turisas is a cunt? Why?

Anonymous
8:51 AM
I love Guns n Roses but that man needs a punch.

you mean Axl, righ?
yeah
agreed

Anonymous
Yeha.

Anonymous
If you are performing live - have a beer that's fine.

Ah

Anonymous
But if you have so many that people in the audience are paying for your alcohol consumption you're a shitty person.

Anonymous
8:52 AM
I am there to listen to your music, I didn't pay to watch you fall over.

Absolutely. Some big bands just think their name is all that matters

@J.J as well as coming on nearly an hour late, being terrible, forgetting lyrics etc

Anonymous
If I wanted to watch that I would've paid for a jester.

Anonymous
You know who are really good live? Paramore.

Anonymous
I know, I know, how can I like Paramore?

Anonymous
8:53 AM
But Hayley's voice is INCREDIBLE.

@RoryAlsop Man that's embarassing

In Edinburgh we have a small venue (Bannermans) where loads of those big names from the 90's come to play small gigs - and they typically are brilliant. The place only holds a couple of hundred, so it's close up and intimate

Anonymous
She sounds almost exactly the same live as she does studio, it is wildly impressive.

And you get to chat with the band after
Paramore are great!

@RoryAlsop I did that with Finntroll! It was amazing!
The guys were super nice

8:54 AM
@MechMK1 I do want to see them - like a lot of their stuff

Anonymous
I wish I saw BMTH live before Oli ruined his voice.

Yeah, they did an amazing live show. Really played their hearts out, even at such a small venue

Anonymous
:(

Anonymous
I genuinely think that BMTH should bin Oli off and get a new frontman.

Anonymous
Not even kidding.

Anonymous
8:55 AM
If he keeps going like this, trying to sing he is going to be forever mute I am sure of it.

Sorry, I can't give comments to that

Anonymous
He's had throat surgery 3 times ffs.

I'm just really sad I never got to see Mayhem live
Because you know...
The thing

Anonymous
HAHAHAHAHHA

Anonymous
I LOVE the story of that.

8:56 AM
Same with Burzum

Anonymous
It's so fucking crazy and just... It's an awesome story.

Anonymous
But, I wouldn't fit in at a black metal concert.

Jul 18 at 8:05, by forest
They are insane people who make music, not musicians who are insane.

Anonymous
They would've literally just burnt me and danced around the fire.

Can't go to see Übermensch either, because muh Verbotsgesetz
Anyways, brb
Back

Anonymous
9:08 AM
I was away too :D

Anonymous
Man, metal is pretty crazy.

Anonymous
I like the stories that exist within it.

Yeah, it's quite an eventful genre
I assume other genres as well, but I'm not too knowledgeable about Jazz

Anonymous
Jazz & Blues has an awful lot of history too, I guess.

Anonymous
I love Jazz.

9:11 AM
Blues is the grandfather of Metal, so it's understandable

Anonymous
Yeah, exactly.

Anonymous
There is a band - The Plot in You.

Anonymous
The lead singer Landon Tewers makes his own music which is blues.

Anonymous
But he adds screams in, it's nice because you can kinda' see how the evolution happened.

Same with the guitar riffs. Add some distortion, high-gain lead tones, etc...
Metal is literally "But what if we add more?"

Anonymous
9:12 AM
Hahhahah - pretty much.

Anonymous
See, all of this

Anonymous
I don't see how anyone can say they DON'T like ANY music.

It shows which genres evolved from which :D

Anonymous
It's so fascinating.

9:13 AM
My best friend doesn't listen to any music

Anonymous
Dude, how?

Anonymous
That must be such a boring existence.

Not everybody is fascinated by the same things. I could read up on some obscure thing and spend hours reading about it, and others are just like "ok dude"

Anonymous
Yeah but I feel like with music, music should be the exception.

Anonymous
I don't know why but it just seems crazy someone could hate music

9:15 AM
It's not hate, it's indifference

Anonymous
Yeah, I guess you're right.

Anonymous
But I still find it weird. I understand people like different things.

Anonymous
But I just feel like music should be the exception, I feel like music is the one subject where there is SOMETHING for everyone.

Anonymous
Some genre.

Anonymous
But thats a naive thought, I guess

9:16 AM
Well, some people just don't feel that way
And btw hi @schroeder
And hi @A.Hersean

Anonymous
Yeah, I know.

Anonymous
It's just crazy to me.

Anonymous
Huh, I just created a server via Linode, its running but I can't ssh.

Anonymous
wtf

Did they just boot? Is sshd running already?

Anonymous
9:19 AM
Yeah it says its ready to ssh

Anonymous
As a previous firewall engineer let it be said now...

Anonymous
I HATE corporate firewall policy

Which firewall policy blocks remote SSH ports?

Anonymous
Apparently this one.

Anonymous
This makes no sense.

9:23 AM
𝔀𝓮𝓲𝓻𝓭

Anonymous
Is it acceptable to say I hate cloud infrastructure?

Anonymous
I can't even load the web console >.>

Anonymous
Kill, me.

Man, I had one (1) use-case for cloud stuff and the fact it's tied to sensitive data makes it impossible

Anonymous
Cloud sucks.

Anonymous
9:25 AM
Sucks so much.

Anonymous
I refuse to change my opinion.

It's amazing as a hashcracker
But sucks for much else

Anonymous
Yeah, that is very true.

Anonymous
What kinda' firewall stops me from using the web console?

Anonymous
lmfao.

9:26 AM
Rooty Tooty Password Bruty is the perfect example for this: You need a lot of power, right now, but extremely irregularly.
Having that power on-premise would not be feasible.

Anonymous
I do have a friend who has a cracking rig at home.

Anonymous
He said it was the biggest waste of $16,000~ ever.

Anonymous
Okay, Linode is terrible.

Anonymous
end of.

@J.J Yes, absolutely. A cracking rig is nice, if you have hashes to crack 24/7/365. Otherwise, a complete waste

Anonymous
9:40 AM
It would be pretty cool to have that much GPU power in your house though.

What for, though? I have one 1080 Ti and my gf has a 2080
We have more than enough to run any modern game on 144fps 1080p

Anonymous
Your girlfriend is a lucky woman.

Anonymous
I'd like a 2080, I am not willing to buy one though.

Yeah, I saved up quite some time to be able to buy that for her

Anonymous
She plays a lot of games then, I guess.

Anonymous
9:43 AM
My girlfriend plays one game and one game only, Rocket League.

Anonymous
She plays all the time. She's a grand champion, hah.

Yes, she plays quite a lot

9:58 AM
@J.J I did have a cracking rig running on a Cray supercomputer once - it was a great tool back when we did a bunch of password strngth audits for clients

10:22 AM
@MechMK1 I have a handsome little cracking rig that beats any cloud service. :P
If you're investing money into cracking anything big, real hardware is always the way to go.
@BenoitEsnard The vast majority of hardware encryption is a sham. Go with software unless your threat model specifically needs to offload encryption to a separate device. VeraCrypt is good for cross-platform support and is quite secure, but LUKS gives greater configurability if you're on Linux.

@forest How so? Just tons of GPUs?

Anonymous
@RoryAlsop That is really cool.

@forest Thanks!
Thanks to @MechMK1 too.
Do any of you know a good Wi-FI card which allow packet injection?

Anonymous
10:43 AM
@BenoitEsnard Pretty much any ALFA card should do.

Anonymous
Also, there is an older TP-LINK, they're quite hard to come by I think it's the TP-LINK WN227 or something like that.

Anonymous
Great for wifi hacking stuffs

@MechMK1 Yup, just a lot of GPUs.
ASICs are better but obviously they have to be really specialized. A million bucks to design some new ASICs each time you need to crack a new hash algorithm is not very practical!

10:59 AM
Has anyone ever created a ASIC dedicated to hash-cracking?
