@Unihedron - yep, meant that to be MSE, my apologies. I'll try and fix later.

I need to stop moderating from mobile devices. The ui sucks.
No worries. Eagerly waiting to get MSE rep from your re-migration ;)

Morning!

@M'vy Morning

@RoryAlsop The very man. Cabling Question for you ... With cat 5/6 patch leads, does the order of the cables matter as long as it's the same at both ends?
07:23
@RоryMcCune the order?
not sure what that means
@RoryAlsop yeah so white/green green orange white/orange
yeah that was pretty vague, sorry :o/ order of wires in the cable
In reality it does make a small difference, and that difference increases as you use faster and faster networking speeds - and it's down to the twisted pairs
as long as you keep the pairs correct, the colour doesn't matter
trying to remember colours from last time I wired
hang on - will give you the definitive answer in a sec
@RoryAlsop ahh so pair order is important that might've been it
we we cabling a cable for my office yesterday and the wall port had a funny looking order of wires on it. with that cabled up the same at both ends it didn't work, but when we put it in 568B order it did...
so was wondering whether it was just a co-incidence (bad termination first time round) or if that was infact the problem....
oh - as long as it is same order at each end it should work, but some orders will be more resistant to crosstalk and noise
@RoryAlsop coolio so a co-incidence :) but hey we have it in 568B now so that's one of the generally approved ones so probably just as well...
in other news my new office is almost done \o/
with En-suite
07:29
Nice!
yeah we're converting our garage again, but this time it's a double so we're both having new offices
@RоryMcCune it could be that the crosstalk was enough to stop it working - I dunno
I have the back bit with limited natural light (just the way I like it) and Marions getting a load of windows at the front
@RоryMcCune Separated by a wall? Or just a partition? DO you get to meet at the coffee machine?
@RоryMcCune There might be some influence due to electromagnetic effect
and 568B - 568A ends are for cross-cable
But that should not really matter with recent equipment
07:41
@RoryAlsop it's a wall , and then they both go into bedrooms then into the hall, so we can meet up at the coffee machine in the Kitchen...
@M'vy that was my thinking - it would be more likely just to limit top speed
Hum ok, so each pair are the positive and negative part for one function. So it makes sense to have the pair positioned correctly so as to make both cable affected by the same perturbations along the whole cable. In this way, the errors are minimised (since it's a relative reading)
It's a physical error dampening :)

Q: What are the new security features in Windows 10?

paj28Title says it all really. I realise I can Google this, but the top links don't cover all the new features I am aware of, so people will benefit from a canonical answer here.

not sure what I want to do with that
@LucasKauffman Yep, not sure either.
@ThomasPornin Just so you know, when you're calling someone something, the contracted form is the standard e.g.: "You're a resistor".
12:05
@RоryMcCune As the name says, the cable consists in four twisted pairs. The pairs are identical except for their amount of twisting (number of turns per unit of length).
Thus, order may matter.
Actually, it tends to matter less at 1 GB/s, since that one uses all eight cables simultaneously.
Ethernet can take substantial abuse at times. I used to successfully propagate a signal through the length of a screwdriver.
3 days weekends are deadly.
@Simon I put that one to good use. Wrote an article.
Initially it was supposed to be a "short note" but, of course, with a keyboard under my fingers, it turned into a 17-page article.
@ThomasPornin Hehe, well good for you! I did work on my portfolio a bit, but not as much as I hoped.
12:22
Anyone else having problems with the main site?
@ThomasPornin link?
@Iszi Nein.
@ThomasPornin Hum, the number of twisted are arbitrary aren't they? So you can switch a pair with another IIRC.
@Simon Confirmed works fine from home but got 502s earlier from work. Now just slow. Probably a proxy issue. Thanks.
@M'vy You can switch, but it seems that the pairs which are "more twisted" are also more resilient to electromagnetic noise.
Also, the number of twists are adjusted so as to avoid resonances (the twist lengths are coprime to each other, if you take my meaning).
12:32
@ThomasPornin Hum so that might be better for some of the pair-function then. right.
@ThomasPornin Yeah, this point was my argument on why you could interchange pairs
@LucasKauffman - any suggestions for making the Windows 10 question better?
13:05
@ThomasPornin You've got a 7990?
@paj28 I'm just not sure "features" are supposed to be a canonical question/answer, specific questions and answers about the particular features would seem a better fit
13:20
@LucasKauffman - what kind of questions would be a fit
you see I'd love to ask "How does Windows 10 Device Guard" work
but I expect I'll get no answers, and a handful of down votes and condescending comments
13:36
@LucasKauffman It's not mine; I got an access to the Openwall "HPC Village"
The main machine contains an HD 7990, an NVidia GTX Titan, and a Xeon Phi card.
Oh lawd, 6 GB DDR5? I'm really losing the track on hardware.
Wait, the titan is 12 GB, ffs.
@SteveDL link says need CPU emulator. Needs CPU emulator what is the point? — Horizon 11 mins ago
oops, linked to comment
@Simon Basically only required if you are running high end games on multiple 2560x1440 and up monitors.
@TerryChia That's pretty insane.
anyway, OP is apparently asking about the differences between "generic decryption" of malware (I assume what's meant is emulation in a VM) and sandboxing, or maybe IPSs... I'm tempted to just suggest using better learning materials and closing the question as too broad... Any opinions?
13:44
@Simon So is the cost of cards with 6GB or 12GB VRAM.
@TerryChia They are aiming at "games at 60 fps on 4k displays"
@TerryChia Indeed.
For what I was developing (modular squarings), I actually did not use these gigabytes of RAM.
@ThomasPornin Yeah, all high end card comes with gobs of VRAM.
I'm really tempted to build a Hackintosh, looks super fun.

Yes, we're the Meese.
@Simon Now you're sounding Scottish
@RoryAlsop I told you already that my last name means "From Scotland" or "Of Scotland"!
And just take a look at my Scottish impersonation:
oi lad
I was obviously Scottish in a previous life.

@Simon I know, but now you're discussing the plural of Mouse!
@Simon Why the Yorkshire accent?
Oh lawd.

Q: Prevent a lot of brute force attacks on Exim2

DesignStudiosSome people or computers have been trying to log in a lot of times on my Linux DirectAdmin server over the last few days. I am receiving a lot of messages of brute force attacks for Exim2 in DirectAdmin. I have already installed Fail2Ban and Block_IP.SH is on the server, so if the user fails 15...

major downside to system backup partitions provided by PC manufacturers... when you use one it puts 5 year old versions of Flash and reader back on the PC!
along with (in this case) Microsoft Works 9!

So has anyone been watching the Witcher 3 gameplay on twitch lately? IT'S SO PRETTY.

How much rep do you need for downvoting?
@Arperum It's only 125, you'll be at 101, 24 rep is pretty easy to get
@raz I know, but lazy.
And getting to 125 rep means one downvote.

easymoden00bdelete system 32 then send me a PM with the resultant system details message that appears. I will help you.

Looks like that's his only activity here, but he's got some unpleasant stuff on other SE sites as well.
