8:31 AM
@JeffFerland ha! nice.
@TerryChia uhh, why the snark? it IS open source....

9:01 AM
@AviD it's not hipster enough for him, so he'll feel compelled to snark!

ahh that must be it then

9:54 AM
mornin'

hi
one of my friends apparently has a heart defect that nobody knew about all of her life
we found out at 3am yesterday

@kalina that doesn't sound like the kind of thing you'd want to find out at 3am...

no
rough 24 hours
we wouldn't have even noticed she had stopped breathing if the dogs hadn't gone mental
she's currently in hospital, in a coma

@Simon hahahahahaha - @Tildal, you're a loon. But I like it :-)
morning everybody
@kalina not good! That's the problem with lots of heart defects - no warning until suddenly Bam! Neighbour has a kid whose heart suddenly did weird things in a swimming pool and they thought he had just nearly drowned. It wasn't until it also happened on a football pitch that they realised. Sort of fine, but now carries a pacemaker everywhere. Until he is old enough to have one implanted.

10:11 AM
@RoryAlsop she's only one year older than me, we had been partying but it was the last day so everybody went to sleep earlyish
and now she's not even breathing by herself
completely shattered my view of mortality
or just... life in general
also, I'm apparently missing the skill of being able to CPR correctly

damn
presumably too early for prognosis

all that's going on in my head is that for some reason I am of the opinion that the human brain doesn't survive more than 10 minutes without oxygen
and it took 20 minutes for the ambulance to arrive
not to mention several minutes at the start where we were trying to work out what was going on

lots of variables
presumably folks were trying to give assisted respiration in that first 20 mins though
fingers crossed then
:-(

10:32 AM
eww that was icky
I found a site last night with current list prices for cars in the local market. Had to give some details to "sign up" to see the info.... Now I get a phone call from a guy from that site, I think he wanted to sell me a car :-S
@AviD inb4 TWSS
i dont usually put in my real phone#, curious if I happened to this time or if he looked me up somewhere

Q: Is there any defensive element for non-standard voltages on networks?

TheGoodUser-AmirAssume that an attacker join to our network as a good person and we give him a cable that is connected to one of our switches. Now, If he connect the wires of that cable to a high voltage (60v for example), what happens? Our switch burns and some of our clients will disconnect. (And also may th...

Just wanted to share this vaguely topical WTFery ;p

@JourneymanGeek cheers :-)

11:13 AM
apparently they're going to try and wake her later today

@RoryAlsop you meant "ethernet over power", right?

@AviD It is? Ooops. :)

@AviD yeah - whatever :-)
no - PoE
Power over Ethernet or PoE describes any of several standardized or ad-hoc systems which pass electrical power along with data on Ethernet cabling. This allows a single cable to provide both data connection and electrical power to devices such as wireless access points or IP cameras. Unlike standards such as Universal Serial Bus which also power devices over the data cables, PoE allows long cable lengths. Power may be carried on the same conductors as the data, or it may be carried on dedicated conductors in the same cable. There are several common techniques for transmitting power over Ethernet...

oh!
thats not what you meant though, is it ;-)

@AviD yeah - I've seen it used in warehouses
where they run PoE wifi routers for their handheld inventory scanners

11:23 AM
but that doesnt go up to 120/240 v, does it?

Apparently listing “a PM” under “Tools” needed for a new project is not appreciated.

@AviD Theirs were 40v if I remember correctly. But the PoE spec appears to allow mains voltages

okay I'll hush up now

I wondered when you'd reach that conclusion by yourself

@AviD @RoryAlsop also for VOIP phones and Wireless access points. I've got a couple of PoE devices in my office..

11:26 AM
@RоryMcCune And we use phantom power for a few things on stage, like microphones
Stupid stupid stupid:

@RоryMcCune one for @ScottPack:

on the subject of power, ya know what's weird. home UPS' even good ones have like 2 9Ah batteries and cost multiple hundres of quid, but you can by a 100Ah battery for about £120
you'd think they'd just stick that kind of battery into the UPS for 5x capacity easy
but I'm sure there's a reason they dont....

@RоryMcCune Profit?

@TerryChia sure but it seems a bit daft, the batteries are widely available so it's easy to see the disparity..

Isn't there something in the UPS spec about charge/discharge times and the constant "on chargeness" #babbling

11:31 AM
@RоryMcCune that's interesting. I'd guess @Terry is right, but that's a bit sad. Wonder if it's down to powercycles
and what @Barry just said
Powercycles - excellent word. Now I'm thinking Tron!

Yay Tron!

heh

@RoryAlsop oh really

yeah see I don't really need something with many cycles just need it sitting there in the event of a powercut. 100Ah would run our backup network for like 15 hours..

so the british government wants all banking data to be transferred over the internet without encryption as well?
I guess such a ban on encryption would prevent the government from using encryption as well?

11:33 AM
^^ this

noooo thats national security!

Utter stupidity

I'm sorry, National Security is second to Personal Security
I guess I don't get a say though, since I pay my taxes to a different country

@kalina you pay tax! I guessed you'd dot around enough to avoid that problem..

I don't avoid paying tax
I just take most of my income as cash
the amount of tax I pay is only reflective of money I'm paid leaving a paper trail
for now, anyway
the amount I earn from cash is starting to exceed the amount I can reliably spend on "living" (ie: stuff I can buy cash without raising eyebrows)
so I'll probably have to start doing something sensible with it all soon
like literally handing it out to strangers in the street.

11:37 AM
lol

still, when the conservatives come back to power after the next election, HDMI will become illegal
oh, and satellite/cable television
still, it's about time Citrix was made illegal

This may well be yet another clincher in persuading the country not to vote Tory...

11:53 AM
Labour isn't great either :(

Maybe start a Rory party? :)
Strong encryption and whisky for all!
3

I for one welcome our new Rory overlords

@RoryAlsop if Cameron gets back in (with or without UKIP help) I'm getting a "don't blame me, I voted yes" T-Shirt

if I didn't have so many friends in this country, I wouldn't have a reason to return
maybe my first investment is purchasing an island and moving all of my friends onto it

@kalina well that's what you could do with the money, pay them to emigrate by employing them as flunkies :)

11:57 AM
I wonder what would happen if Google, Microsoft and Apple banded together and purchased a country, build a massive data center in it, and then refused to set up extradition agreements with the rest of the world
2
apart from data being outside of the realm of the NSA, that is

@kalina We might actually get some work done…

especially if said event sparked an exodus of America's top technology companies all relocating
I'm sure that in itself would trigger an economic landslide, or at least would, if any of those companies actually paid taxes properly

12:11 PM
This. Is. Awesome.

12:28 PM
you're awesome.

@AviD who is this, and what have you done with @AviD ?

@RоryMcCune @Simon totally donuted me.
5

@AviD I really hope that isn't an euphemism.

@AviD that must've been one stale donut flung pretty hard to have turned you nice :op

urmm, I intended for you to understand that as him hacking my identity
see thats the problem with uberwords, other people can misinterpret it any way they want.
like smurfs.

12:35 PM
@AviD nah you use that horrible mis-spelling too, so hard to tell the diff.

@RоryMcCune you mean "ID" instead of "Id" ?

@RоryMcCune I'll get a "don't blame me, I didn't vote Tory"
@kalina Nah - the US would bomb it

@AviD huhwhut? I don't see ID or Id (or am I just being slow again?)

@RоryMcCune I dunno? couldnt figure out what else I misspelled.

@AviD .... not this again.... you doughnut

12:43 PM
ohhhh
nevermind then

@AviD is drunk as usual.

@RoryAlsop would the US be willing to wipe out Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Apple, etc?
I imagine the public backlash against that would be a bit of a nightmare

ESC is 0x1b. Down arrow is 0x1b,0x5b,0x42. Both start with 0x1b. Terminal apps differentiate by waiting ~250ms and peeking at the next byte.
Holy crap that's terrible.

especially since they'd have moved to protect said public's data

12:45 PM
@kalina But but but... terrorist!

right I need to go

@kalina \o

@kalina That isn't a very reassuring statement when it comes right after "But but but... terrorist!"
@RоryMcCune You seen the new MBA rumors?

BLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEH

@Simon TWSS

12:55 PM
She said that her stomach feels like crap?
Poor her, I know the feeling.

@TerryChia meh, who needs USB anyway. It's just a Windows thing.

@AviD Well, the rumors point to it only having USB.
One USB Type C port to be exact.

@TerryChia you mean "NOT having USB".

@TerryChia MBA?

Not even auxiliary port?

12:58 PM
@RoryAlsop Fruit product.

1.5mm that is

also, spacious keyboards? What are you an obese american? Cut down on those donuts.

@Simon 3.5mm? It seems like 1 3.5 and 1 USB Type C.

@TerryChia oh

A 3.5, really?
I got my sizes mixed up again.
I was referring to my D, soz.

12:59 PM
@Simon Isn't the standard headphone jack 3.5mm? O_O googles

Yeah you might be right.
No wait I was right.
WAIT
WHY IS THIS SO CONFUSING?

@Simon It's 3.5mm

@Simon IT'S JUST A DONUT PUT IT IN YOUR MOUTH
4
hurhur

@TerryChia Yeah you got it.
I got a lot of results for 1.5 which is odd.
~1/8" and exactly 1/4"
Now I'll remember it.

@Simon Canuduh.

1:06 PM
@TerryChia yeah interestingly contradictory with something I saw the other day that said that Apple would try to kill of USB-C by opening up lightning

@RоryMcCune I'm skeptical about the whole thing.

No one wants their damn ports.

@TerryChia apple have traditionally not been best friends of port standards.

@RоryMcCune Even more than that, one port on a device is a little too radical even for Apple.

@TerryChia Surface pro 3....

1:08 PM
@RоryMcCune Power is still separate on the SP3 though.

My stomach is back to normal.
DRINK ALL DA COFFEE

@TerryChia ohh I didn't realise they were going to replace the power socket as well... yeah that is taking things too far

@RоryMcCune That seems like what the rumors are suggesting...

@TerryChia one button on a mouse is a little too radical too

@AviD If I record a video for a donut rap song, will you join in?
You would be responsible of stuffing a lot of donuts in your mouth.

1:18 PM
@AviD No.

you no.

@Simon inb4 the @kalina remix :op

Which we'd never hear because her music is so #sekret

I'm still convinced @kalina is Taylor Swift.

The InfoSec one?

1:28 PM
is there more than one?

Hum probably not.
@AviD Did you tell your wife that you like donuts yet?
It's nothing to be ashamed of you know.

oh it is well known.
hmm maybe we should order donuts this week.

@AviD don't order too many, you know you can't spell doughnuts without 'ugh'

donuts dont have that problem, though

Can a website prohibit to display their data on your website?
Even if you specifically write that it was taken from X website.

1:40 PM
@Simon I'd imagine this varies by jurisdiction.

bleh that's what I thought

And also complex lawyery things like fair use.

@Simon sure they could. Might not have any effect, though.

tl;dr hire a lawyer

I'd like to search through multiple online car sellers sites and display the results on my website.
I feel like it's gonna be too much trouble, bleh.

1:43 PM
@TerryChia I wish it was true

DONUT ALERT
-1
A: What operating systems and devices are known to be affected by Shellshock? What patches are available?

bp2i_sr23No other Network vendors : AVOCENT vulnerable indeed, ALCATEL not vulnerable .... ?

@Simon actually, that sounds better than flag alert

@RoryAlsop :)
g'day all
checks if the internet is on fire

hello @Til

@TildalWave There still isn't OpenSSL WIndows binaries for the latest release containing multiple CVEs so yes.
And that's because the release broke the build process on Windows.
/me grumbles

1:54 PM
Is it only -20 this morning? Wow, better get my swimsuit ready!

@TerryChia hehehe yeah that explains "Same" status here istheinternetonfire.com

Why does that website use SSL?

@Simon Because encrypt all the things?

Encrypt static data?
Fine, fine, he might have some admin module.

@Simon so you can be sure to get an opinion on your donut from actual experts

1:56 PM
Encrypt everything because Conservatives/NSA/whatever

@Simon Think of it this way: You: Doctor, why does it burn when I pee? Doctor: Bwahahaha hey folks did you hear this? He's been dunking his donut in hot sauce!!

I request more information regarding why someone would dunk a donut in hot sauce.
I'm a big fan of hot sauce but on a donut, really?

hehehe

@RoryAlsop you wish I was Taylor Swift?
and what possible things would you expect to get from me that I don't already give, other than... my name?

@ Everyone, don't fall in da trap.

2:05 PM
@kalina @RoryAlsop wants a song written about him.

@TerryChia doesn't take Taylor Swift to do that, he's a musician himself, you know...
besides, who do you think Love Story was about -.-

And not the Afrojack kind of musician, a real one.

@kalina He wants a song written about him to be on a multi-platinum record.

^l0l

3 mins ago, by kalina
besides, who do you think Love Story was about -.-
anyway

2:09 PM
no

now I have serious business to deal with

NO

@kalina The ... song?

no, my friend who is in hospital

dope?

2:10 PM
music is not serious business unless you're on the receiving end of a Spotify payment

@kalina Oh. :(

@Simon no, heart defect
going now

TIL Ariana Grande wasn't a font.

Yeah I lulz'd at that one.

did I tell you peeps about the really bizarro world IP addressing set-up that my dedicated hosting box uses?

2:15 PM
@RоryMcCune Nope, do tell.

you get a main IP address with the account. then if you order more addresses they're in completely different netblocks. the weird part is that you still force them to have the same default gateway as the main address. So you have an IP whos default gateway isn't in the same network. I didn't even think that would work

@RоryMcCune Interesting...

you have to force linux to accept it by manually adding a route for the gateway then set that IP to be the gateway
it's proper odd. They do something down a layer 2 I think to make it all work

@kalina Taylor Swift has either awesome business advisors or is very smart. And while I am not a fan of that genre of music, I am impressed by someone who can write, play and sing those songs with no accompaniment or with full backing
@kalina lol
@kalina I have had a spotify payment.....
not going to comment on size...
2

@RoryAlsop TWSS!

2:19 PM
Was it more than 1.15$?

did you know that the best source of hot beverages turns out to be stoned australian marsupials.....
it turns out that they provide..... high koala tea
2

@RоryMcCune ... erm wut?
oh lordy

woohoo epic bad pun

raz
@RоryMcCune Your face is an epic bad pun.

2:37 PM
@RоryMcCune LOL! That's awesome. I'm stealing that.

@Xander teenage son/daughter bringing friends over later?
because embarrassing them with such lame puns is really the only purpose I can see for wanting to steal that.

@AviD I see you're not an appreciator of the fine art of puns

whats that thing they say, about snark being the lowest form of humour - but only because punnage doesnt even count?

2:58 PM
@AviD when you say "they" you mean people without a sense of humour right? probably the same as the "ugh" deniers

okay actually the "ugh" is quite fitting, when discussing puns.

^lulz

@AviD of course, only the best puns make you groan :)

okay okay! just don't go all scottish on me.

#unleashmyscottish

3:05 PM
it's about to get braveheart up in here

OI MEL GIBSON M8

michenriksen.com/blog/gitrob-putting-the-open-source-in-osint <-- a whole world of fail to be discovered here

3:24 PM
@RоryMcCune I don't get it. Is that in a similar sense to that why can't you find aspirin in a jungle joke?

@TildalWave kind of it's a play on the sound of "high koala tea" which if you say it out loud may sound like "high quality" so a stoned australian marsupial is a high (stoned) australian marsupial (koala) serving hot drinks (tea) and they're the best 'cause they're high quality</jokeexplainer>

@RоryMcCune Yeah, that looks pretty useful.

@RоryMcCune ah yes I get it now, I didn't try all the accents :)

what's the aspirin joke?

I was like ... haiku what? :))
@Ohnana the usual one is because parrots ate them all
(paracetamol)
some alternative ones are a bit sexist
like because until Jane came along nobody had a headache

3:33 PM
you mean Acetaminophen T_T
lol the jane one. oh god, the aspirin jokes are so bad yet funny all the same

no ... parrots ([parac]) ate ([et]) them ([am]) all ([ol])

yes tildal I can internally pronounce words

hehehe

paracetamol = Acetaminophen in the us and japan

3:36 PM
@Ohnana was that an "Aussie inside" joke? :D

@TildalWave your humor is much too esoteric for me. either that or my wit processor needs some more coffee fuel

@RоryMcCune Consensus in the office is that that was brilliant!

@RoryAlsop yeah who knew /r/puns existed :)
well I didn't till just now
now I have a load of awesome puns

rip sec.se chat

3:40 PM
@RоryMcCune damn you, King of the Time-Sink!
@kalina - talking of sampling. New Fall Out Boy track samples the Munsters theme

@RoryAlsop I'm not sure I can take that crown from Avi "College Humor" D

@Tildal - I popped a comment on that spaceprobe post. Worldbuilding wouldn't welcome that question, as it's crap, but it's on topic there
@RоryMcCune let me see:
AviD - College Humor
Rory - reddit, oglaf, numerous other cartoons, TVtropes...
Sorry dude - it's definitely you :-)

@RoryAlsop ahh no tvtropes ain't me I don't even go to that site :op
I'll own up on reddit and oglaf tho'

@RоryMcCune oh, apologies - was that maybe @ScottPack

from search looks like @kalina and @TerryChia
and @Iszi

3:48 PM
enabled assertions on a system (in test) ... it failed to boot.
I'm just gonna give up here.
good night

oglaf is one of my favorite webcomics

@RoryAlsop yup cheers, there's also Writers of course
@Ohnana my fav "internal accent" joke youtube.com/…
well one of the safe for work ones at least

anyone up for Question of the Week?
Oh, and @TildalWave - what are you going to do if that Community Promotion ad gets any more upvotes? ;-P

@RoryAlsop It's a community ad, what am I supposed to do? Community decides if they wanna rotate it on the main page.
I have no quarrels seeing it on the front page

@TildalWave pffft

3:57 PM
you figure I should delete it if it does get 6+ votes?

// Private function to ...
public function
10/10

@TildalWave nothing to do with me :-p

@TildalWave Want me to downvote it? I've kept my vote for this reason.

@Simon lol

:D

4:00 PM
@Simon (I'm ready with my donut downvote)

tehe

@Simon

wat

@Simon you need to do a community ad for donuts.
@Simon. Donuts. Do it.

@tylerl did it already

dunno I don't think it'll ever get huge support because it would be considered OT by most, but if it does get a few hundred displays (and perhaps a few clicks with it), I don't really see it as problematic ... it's the community here that's supposed to decide what other causes they want to promote, they don't really have to have anything to do with the purpose of the site, do they?

@TildalWave technically, that's correct

If the last part of your sentence is true then that'd be sick.

@RoryAlsop ha! how did I miss that??

@AviD That's what I said yesterday when I saw it.

4:03 PM
@Simon it even has Simon in a doughnut

That is art.

I dunno, man. Sprinkles? That's the best we can do, really?

It's from The Simpsons, it's legit as hell.

legit, but there are other better donuts.
..... aaaaaand now I want a donut. No, NEED a donut.

Fine, make one that says "Don't be an InfoSec donut, join Sec.SE" with another donut then.

4:06 PM
@Simon oh yeah, see, thats a good excuse to have donuts.

@Simon that actually would be off-topic, strange as it might sound

@TildalWave No - we can use an ad for Sec.SE - see the twitter one, for example

@RoryAlsop technically, they're supposed to promote other communities or site features that might be otherwise missed while the joining the site part is already taken care of with the top bar (that you don't see because you're already a member)

@TildalWave ooooo. I did not know that. I don't see adverts...

It sounds like the rules aren't well-defined or at least not enforced.
The twitter one stayed for a whole year.
"For example, you might promote the following things:"
"the site's twitter account"
Then, it is allowed.

4:12 PM
@Simon - did you just downvote the Metaltech one? :-)

Nope, I still have my vote.

ah - I won't use my donut destroying vote then... :-)

@RoryAlsop @RоryMcCune I think @Iszi is our local tvtropes addict.

lulzzz
If you say that you wanna see the ad go in the list, I will upvote it.
But I feel like that's just gonna get it deleted, which would suck.

@Simon I like it - I've already posted it on Facebook, as @TildalWave did such a good job

4:14 PM
hehe
upboated
1 moar lads

4:36 PM
I remember when @Xander had 3 rep. Now, he has like 3 million.

@Simon Yeah, I got a bit motivated there. I've been a member of the site for over four years now, but got something like 2/3rd of all my rep this past Sept/Oct/Nov. Not really sure how that happened.

5:35 PM
the illegal ones?

@Xander add-on to the earlier pun... "Is the Koala named Mercy? Don't drink the bottom quarter-inch of the cup. Everybody knows the Koala Tea of Mercy is not strained."
2

5:46 PM
@ScottPack Yeah, I guess TVTropes and Wikipedia are kind-of my things.
Each can, in their own ways, be equally time-sinking.

it's not just time that you're sinking there
all those poor donuts ...

@RoryAlsop both, but she's smart

@kalina "she" nice mis-direction with the use of the 3rd person

I wouldn't know what you were talking about.

@kalina good call
