@Iszi SF people hate questions like that. They actually have a close reason that says you're too dumb to ask questions here. Phrased a little more gently, but that's the gist.

1:14 AM
@tylerl What's SF?

ServerFault

thanks

@tylerl Man i freaking hate systemd. And I'm a Fedora user. Blah.

3:40 AM
@TerryChia why do you hate systemd?
I actually think it's nice

Hey everyone
I'm trying to kill a program
And some other process keeps starting it back up
Any ideas as to how I can find out which one?

@KnightOfNi sounds like you got a problem.

Yes

OS?

I just recently established that myself...
hehe
Win 7

3:42 AM
@tylerl I think it's overly complicated and I get the impression that it isn't very stable (or maybe that's what I get for using a bleeding edge distro...).
Or maybe I'm just adverse to change. :P

@TerryChia I agree that it's complicated. I've spend many hours reading up on it, but once you understand the problems it's solving, the design appears pretty elegant
Lennart has a blog series explaining how it works and why he did it the way he did.
Also, it's quickly becoming the setup that kernel devs are assuming you'll be running. Greg K-H is pretty happy with it, and he's even been working on an in-kernel dbus
so, udev is now part of the systemd project, logind (another systemd project) replaces ConsoleKit, and ConsoleKit has been officially discontinued
If you're not using systemd, you're gonna get left behind.
@KnightOfNi you can sometimes use process explorer to see what the parent process is, unless they did the double-fork trick to daemonize. It's not as common on windows, though.

@tylerl Never mind, used the sysinternals process explorer to figure out what was accessing the file

Event then, windows keeps the parent process ID, which might be usable for something

thanks though

we dont really do tech support here, though.

3:53 AM
Yeah
Sorry about that
Just wanted a quick answer from people who knew what they were doing

@KnightOfNi That's the thing: I've got a solid understanding of what I'm doing; I have no idea what you're doing.

@tylerl Fair point.

How the hell is this not closed as SR?

Q: A firewall without any extra features

Sadeq DoustiI have Kaspersky Internet Security (KIS) installed on my system. I always keep it disabled, yet using a few practices, I kept my system virus free for years: I disabled autorun using these tricks; I installed the freeware Panda USB Vaccine; Every time I get a new file from the web or by other m...

@RoryAlsop ^?

it is...
(I hadn't seen it)
lots of upvotes for a product recommendation question

@Iszi Because it is a question from 2010....

@RoryAlsop What do you mean you hadn't seen it? You deleted an answer from it 16 minutes ago.
@TerryChia Even more reason it should have been closed. We were probably still in beta, and everyone had vote-to-close permissions.

@Iszi that is quite possible
for really bad answers that are flagged, it can be a follow flag link to answer, agree, nuke
I'm going through a mass of flags over on Video, Sound Design and Music - so I quickly popped back to do this one

@Iszi The bar for acceptable questions were much lower..... I can go flag and VTC a bunch of shitty questions and answers from you guys even if you want to start nuking old stuff...

9:00 AM
@TerryChia I'm not looking for stuff to kill - this just happened to pop toward the top of the "active" pile.

@Iszi And that explains why it is not closed doesn't it?

@TerryChia No. People being lax about QC back in the day, as you said, would explain it.
Now, why it has remained unclosed for so long - yeah, lack of activity would cover that.
I think I've done my "good answer for a crap question" for today.

A: VPN and remote desktop access

IsziBased on the phrasing of your question, I'm going to make a couple assumptions and compose the rest of my answer from there. Assumptions: Your desktop is personally-owned equipment. You do not have VPN software installed on your desktop, and it very well may be a violation of your company's ...

It might even be a duplicate, but I wasn't in the mood to dig the old one up. Writing the answer was probably actually quicker.

@Iszi agreed. I improved the formatting of the question, but it is low quality "help me breach the rules configured for connecting to work" kind of thing

@RoryAlsop And you didn't fix "enjoy fomforts" while you were at it? Shame on you.

9:15 AM
@Iszi dammit :-(
maybe I need to take a break from the screen
back later...

@RoryAlsop Or go back to bed. What are you doing up so early on a weekend?

@Iszi loads of work to do (actual paid work, not volunteer moderating work :-)
a big paper to write

@RoryAlsop On the weekend? Ouch.

bunch of meetings to prep for
yeah, I know

3-day weekend for me - hence why I'm still up past 0400.
But I'm turning in now. G'night.

9:17 AM
I'm hopefully getting a decent bunch of holidays carried over from last year though
night

Try not to work too hard - surely you'll be doing enough of that during the week anyway.

Hockey USA : RUS now in 10-15 minutes, should be good

@TildalWave Hockey, isn't that a Canadian thing? ;)

@TerryChia that's a bit like saying that football (soccer) is an English thing

@TildalWave I'm kidding. I just wanted to make fun of someone since @Simon hasn't been around lately. :P

I know, it's OK you can try again
Simon's been here last night

@TildalWave He only said a few things though.

12:33 PM
@TerryChia yes @Adnan smothered him with a loving hug again :)

@TildalWave Typical @Adnan.

@TerryChia seems also typical @Simon he's like our own Kenny McCormick

@TildalWave I have no idea who that is but I'm going to go ahead and agree with you.

Kenneth "Kenny" McCormick (sometimes spelled as McKormick) is a character in the animated television series South Park. He is one of the main characters along with his friends Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, and Eric Cartman. His oft-muffled and indiscernible speech—the result of his parka hood covering his mouth—is provided by co-creator Matt Stone. He debuted on television when South Park first aired on August 13, 1997, after having first appeared in The Spirit of Christmas shorts created by Stone and long-time collaborator Trey Parker in 1992 (Jesus vs. Frosty) and 1995 (Jesu...

Ah South park. I don't watch South park.

12:37 PM
Me neither but that doesn't mean you wouldn't know they kill him in each episode

Sounds just like @Simon then.

hehe they're already locked in a fight
not 5 minutes into first third

@ManishEarth Neat. :)
I'd have expected you to be committing less on GitHub since FF isn't using that for source control. :P

@TerryChia Actually, it does. Two of my forked repos are from Mozilla GH
But I haven't committed anything to that

@ManishEarth Ah really? I was under the impression that FF was using something else entirely.

@TerryChia Firefox uses hg (hg.mozilla.org)
However there are mozilla projects on github.com/Mozilla

@ManishEarth Yeah, I meant FF specifically. You also contribute to other Mozilla projects?

1:17 PM
@TerryChia I plan to. Haven't started yet.
Just done Firefox/Toolkit bugs, and one Bugzilla security bug

@ManishEarth Neat. If you want something else to do, here's a nice project. :P github.com/pyca/cryptography

1:39 PM
no time
(i got bored so I populated m blog post with octocats :P)

@ManishEarth Heh, who doesn't love octocats?

exactly

> Metasploit Update contains a QRCode-driven exploit for Android, affects versions under 4.2. So, you're okay unless you're in the 70% of folks with a vuln version

3:00 PM
(If you are not the sysadmin in question...)

3:21 PM
Mercans beat Russkies in hockey after penalty shootout
One goal from Russkies was not called during regular play tho

@TerryChia Oh dear. I laughed at this in the first couple paragraphs, but by the time I got to "e-mail's not secure" I was actually kind of sad...

4:07 PM
@KnightOfNi The whole thing makes me sad.

@TerryChia To an extent, yes, but usually a laugh at someone else' expense make me feel more happy than anything else. The sad part is, that guy got hired to what he did... Somebody slipped up a bit...

@KnightOfNi That guy will probably never find a sysadmin job ever again.
If there is any justice in the world that is.
Seriously, wiping the server before a successful restore?

@TerryChia Because why not?
A few years ago I saw someone delete several files as he copied them to another folder... Betcha he never made that mistake again.

@TerryChia he'd prolly end up dreaming aliens and anal probes, but I think that admin needs hypnosis

4:54 PM
... I feel like playing with cryptolocker
but I won't
How does it behave on VMs?

@ManishEarth Heh. You get the threatening letter and send a sarcastic reply back...

@KnightOfNi lol

@ManishEarth I don't see why it would behave differently from what I have seen.
I doubt it's particularly sophisticated considering the type of users it's targeting.

I bet you'd have to get the file into the VM by some route and seal that route first

@TerryChia Heh. I guess that guy deserved that...
