@Scott - yes, I saw those paired portals and I approve :-)

@RoryAlsop I got a good giggle out of that last night.
I should probably try one of those games sometime.

Portal really rocks - I completed the original ages ago, but there are so many 3rd party levels that I still play it. Some of them are much bigger than the original game.
And portal 2 is really well thought out - even the single player campaign one is excellent, with Stephen Merchant playing a key role

I want to get the original, but it annoys me that it only comes with the Orange Box.
And, I hate playing sequels without playing the original.

Oh - did they limit it now? Well, the upside is that quite a few of the Orange Box let you set them as a gift and pass them on (if you have them already)
@Iszi yeah, you need to play the first one first

I think I now have a machine that will run the original, so it might be a good time to try it out.

1:27 PM
@RoryAlsop I've heard (I think on Gaming.SE) that it's not totally necessary.

I have heard that the first one h ad a bit of an issue with some of the puzzles relying a bit too much on twitch gaming.

not necessary at all, but it gives much wider feel to the environment, context and the story
If you get it and enjoy it I'll send you links to the best community content (not twitch ones)
There were some DLC puzzles I just couldn't understand how any human could manage - twitching and multi portaling etc
the original game itself is remarkably easy once you get a feel for it

That bundling with the Orange Box is annoying though. Not that I don't want to get HL2, but it would be nice if I could buy them separately for less.

tricky on a laptop with a touchpad though I have seen folks try it

Looking at the specs listed on The Source Of All Knowledge, I do have a laptop that should handle it quite nicely. I would definitely use a real mouse, though.
I've never been a fan of gaming with either mighty mice or touchpads

1:34 PM
@ScottPack It's very tricky, but doable.

@ScottPack Gaming mice FTW

The biggest problem with mighty mice is that they can only handle one button press at a time. So even a non-gaming mouse is better :)

Is someone planning to merge the two copies of that obnoxious question about not breaking the law?

@nealmcb ooh - two copies? Hang on - will go look

@nealmcb You have a handy link to both?
nm
I just noticed how recent they both were.

yup

He mentions cross-posting, but it doesn't look like the oldest was migrated. Did the merge wipe out the migration footer?

And I voted that "gold disk" question as "too localized"

2:06 PM
I'm waffling between NARQ and localized

@ScottPack The merge kept all the comments from both, so probably some will not make sense now.

Truthfully, to my mind the only close reasons that really count are 'not constructive', 'migration', and 'duplicate'. The rest might as well be 'other'.

@ScottPack the gold retina one is too localised and NARQ: definitely other
done

It, without question, definitely fits in both categories. I was leaning towards NARQ but decided on 'too localized' so we could show some consensus.

2:38 PM
Guess what I am doing right now? (:

Chatting in The DMZ?

ZOMG
how did you know?!?!?!?!!!!!1111one

All team alert - @RebeccaChernoff spotted in the DMZ.....

Hmmm

@RebeccaChernoff Heh, ROFLCopters

2:44 PM
what I am doing has something to do with a blog. (:

@RebeccaChernoff A top-secret blog? :)

Does it involve cake?

the cake is a lie ):

eeeek.

2:48 PM
No onebox?

hmm, I think only to posts.

I had cake:-)
and looking forward to bloggy goodness

The foundations of crypto and math are being challenged! BBC News - 'Tau day' marked by opponents of maths constant pi :)

@RebeccaChernoff Sweet. I presume once we start populating it, we get a link to it on the main site?

we'll give it time to grow first, a beta phase kinda like the sites

3:02 PM
@nealmcb isn't that just subjective matter?

@Mvy It seems to be more than just a joke, but I'm still reading

Great, now I want cake.

On tau day you get a whole cake, not just half....
The whole 6.28 radians....

@nealmcb ;-P

...

3:06 PM
I wonder if I should be concerned that I spent nearly 6 years working in a Mathematics department and had no idea what number Ï„ represented.

Do we have MathML support in chat?
$\pi$
fails.

No \LaTeX support either.

@ScottPack 2 pies. Mmmm, pies

@RoryAlsop Did I mention that the ole lady made me a lovely key lime cheesecake for my birthday? That made me all kinds of happy.

@RebeccaChernoff so - I guess we now just need to figure out who wants to be the first admins for the blog:-)

3:08 PM
No cake, but I'll accept a nice custard in lieu of cake.

@ScottPack you just can't get a good key lime cheesecake here!

@RoryAlsop I'll have to look up the recipe we used.

@ScottPack oooh - that could be so much win!

Traditionally our recipe for cheesecake was actually a lie. It was a bakeless thing, but contained vast amounts of scotch.
So I think next we'll be replacing the key line with some peaty goodness.

@ScottPack Win x 2

3:11 PM
So yeah... I see we've found our way back to the traditional topic of food.

@RoryAlsop too late q:

@RebeccaChernoff hahaha - just saw that email
@Iszi - food wins

@Iszi as I've said before...

@Rebecca - will get onto that later this eve...have band practice for a few hours after work as lots of gigs coming up this summer

Mar 11 at 19:35, by packs
Without it what are we but hungry and sober blokes looking for evidence of child porn on some random guy's computer.

3:13 PM
@RoryAlsop I added @AviD as well.

@RebeccaChernoff cool - was going to take hints from @Ivo's experiences as to how to make this work once it gets bigger, but certainly for now we can get the first couple ready anyway and we have enough folks ready to contribute that it should all be good

@Mvy Oooh - I love what tau does to Euler's identity. See tauday.com Sweet!

@RoryAlsop I can't find it quickly, so I'll have to get back to you with the recipe. Some friends of ours posted it on the intartubes somewhere. They, unfortunately, have very common names.

@nealmcb checking this.

3:23 PM
@ScottPack excellent - have starred so i can find it once I get home.
Cheers

> The complex exponential of the circle constant is unity.

right - off to do the school run then band practice with my new 7 string Ibanez...let's see how this works:-) later all.

@RoryAlsop I would recommend using chopped zest, instead of strands, but other than the occasional lemon string in my tooth it was quite yummo.

Q: Would this kind of encryption be good at anything?

VercasI have put much thought into this very simple algorithm and I have no clue if it was thought before... But I think it should have. I also know nothing about other encryption algorithms so I can't tell whether this was already invented or not. It is all sketched on this paper: And this is a...

Well, it will be if that ever gets migrated.

to where?
SO?
He already Xposted

I suppose I was being pedantic. One cannot close as exact duplicate across sites.

Well no. But I usually flag it for mods attention on one site
with link to the other

I sometimes wish "This is a stupid idea and you should be disallowed from working in a related field." was a close option, but alas no.

:D
Close reason: the user's a moron.

haha
please tell me you're talking about the vigenere post

Well ... we are
BTW we got a pretty dupe
with the HSM

Well security is about to open its own blog, isn't it?

@Mvy I'm not sure, and if so then congrats! Perhaps we can feature some of your posts over on our end... or while your waiting you can get some posts started on our end.
@RebeccaChernoff would be the best person to know if there is going to be a start of the blog anytime soon

Well I bet I had seen that on meta somewhere

@Mvy, remember this conversation from earlier?
5 hours ago, by Rebecca Chernoff
Guess what I am doing right now? (:

Yes, you are right @Rebecca!

7:45 PM
@Mvy this fact does not surprise me. (:

It's about time, lady!

@RebeccaChernoff LOL

@Mvy Well, I was speaking more generally about bad ideas in questions. I can't say specifically whether or not I was had any specifics in mind when making such comments. cough

perhaps that'd be a good thing to start off for your blog?

7:47 PM
Yep probably.
Is that a chat room?
oh yes it is :D

@KronoS, quit poaching the other community blogs q:

@RebeccaChernoff hey I do what I want! :P

You should do a post about fitting a user for mice. :)

KronoSOne suggestions that has worked EXTREMELY well for us over at blog.SU has been establishing a 'Question of the Week' blog post were we focus on the details of a really good question/answer. We ask a questions each week on Meta for user to nominate other user's questions or answers. This may be ...

there see @RebeccaChernoff I'm not poaching... just giving suggestions for them :P

@Kr
@KronoS, is it really helpful to do a blog just to copycat a bunch of criminals?

@HendrikBrummermann what do you mean?

Your quote.

sorry dude... I'm not getting what you mean.. what quote exactly? The fact that hacker groups are causing havok?

It would be way more productive to convince StackExchange Inc. to fix the security issues on their site.

so you're saying that we should do anything about helping SE'rs improve their security?
