12:10 AM
crickets

12:23 AM
Speaking of old people. Facebook is too hard to use now
/me sighs

Anyone else think this isn't quite an "authentication" question?

Q: Verifying server software integrity?

ProdigySimI'm trying to brainstorm a security scheme for the problem of verifying server software integrity. The domain of this problem is Game Servers built on Valve's Source Dedicated Servers. These servers are used in competitive gaming, and the integrity of these servers can be incredibly important in ...

@Iszi it's authenticating the server to the game organiser, isn't it?

3 hours later…
12:29 PM
@GrahamLee Maybe.... It's probably authenticating the server to the game organizer in this context.

1 hour later…
1:57 PM
@packs what's one of them, then?

2:45 PM
Wow, @RoryAlsop - This one's almost down-vote worthy. I'm disappointed. :-(

A: Stopping someone hacking a Windows XP account password

Rory AlsopIf you run Group Policy, you can disable removable filesystems entirely - see this Microsoft link.

(And I'm perhaps also a little too critical.) ;-)

3:04 PM
@GrahamLee Oh, that was probably a bit too subtle. I was doing a s/organiser/organizer/
What we've learned on the other trilogy sites is that the path to high rep is two-fold: 1) Average answer quality must be at best average, 2) Lots and lots of answers.
You're going to get some stinkers.

@packs no, I got the [sz] thing, I was just saying I don't know what an 'organizer' is but I do know what an 'organiser' is :-P

You people :)

interestingly, about 33% of all text in English produced in Britain uses -ize anyway.

Ah, so they're getting it right now.

no, it was never an Americanism
Oxford University Press always used -ize, Cambridge University Press always used -ise
we're a bit odd :)

3:15 PM
That is odd. I didn't know that.
In other news. I just got finished with a consult. A guy was having authentication problems so I popped out to see what was going on.

Analyze vs. analyse is American vs. British. Recognize vs. recognise is just alternate spellings.

chmod g-rwx /path/to/id_rsa

Yeah, for some reason Linux has this braindead idea that just because it creates a new group for every user, it's allowed to get group permissions wrong ;-)

@GrahamLee That's pretty well distribution specific.
I appreciate that ssh attempts to protect you from yourself.

@GrahamLee Merriam-Webster begs to differ: merriam-webster.com/dictionary/recognise

3:22 PM
Yeah, well that's hardly a canonical dictionary, is it? It's American.

@GrahamLee I prefer the OED

Yeah, Oxford doesn't even seem to recognize the British spelling.

@Iszi that's because recognize is [one of] the British spelling[s]

Interesting
The main listing is just 'recognize' but the spelling 'recognise' is used heavily within the definitional text.

3:39 PM
I don't have a registration for the OED.
(and I don't have illicit VPN access to somewhere that does any more, either)

@GrahamLee Same

Registration?
I suppose my netblock must be allowed.

@packs probably, you're on a .edu aren't you?

@GrahamLee Affirmative. Hence my presumption :)

4:07 PM
@Iszi not only down-vote worthy, but delete-worthy. Your answer was infinitely better. (Can't believe you passed up the opportunity to vote me down :-)
And hello all :-)

Awrite

Awrite Mr Lee
You heard back yet re your BSides talk?

yeah, I'm not speaking. Decent show in the votes, but not into the top bracket
bit of a relief, really: two confs this month, one in April, and a video training course in May as it is

:-) not to worry - still hope to see you at OWASP Scotland - did Rory McCune contact you with dates yet? Oh, and I passed your details to the guys in the US

4:23 PM
no, he didn't.
Erm, which guys in the US? Hopefully not the TSA...

@Graham - I'll chase up
and no def not the TSA
apple guys :-)

So no doggie biscuits in his luggage?

@packs LOL

@RoryAlsop: ah, those Americans. ta.

Hahahaha

4:26 PM
ooh, two confs in September now, too.

there's nothing like keeping busy
were you planning to come to OWASP AppSecEU in Dublin at all?

guess what? I have The Clash that weekend ;)

Are they still touring?

@packs Hahaha!
hmmm - can't remember if I checked if can I edit the comments of others - hang on

@packs, funny you should mention that, I'm wearing my "London Calling" t-shirt

4:40 PM
Yay - I guess I can
@GrahamLee Consider my annoying propensity to edit other people's messages :-P
:-)

@RoryAlsop two can play that game :P

@GrahamLee Heh. And here I am in my windowpane plaid

@Graham - dammit. Beaten at my own game!
;-P
Now I know I can do it I'd best stop it
(or at least not against other diamonds....)

indeed. Editing our esteemed visitors is fine.

@packs I feel I should get the reference, but I must be having an off day (memory does go as you get older...)

4:48 PM
Here's a reasonable example thanks to google

very smart! It's good to see not all youngsters wear hoodies :-)

The ole lady has one or two, but the only product I own that contains a hood is an LLBean job with a hood that rolls up into the collar.

BTW, talking of the Clash touring, I think Joe Strummer stopped doing live shows a few years back :(

Speaking of touring, time to go home for lunch.

@Graham - my lead singer was delighted he got to meet the Stranglers after their gig in Edinburgh this weekend
still rocking out, apparently
@packs - enjoy

5:03 PM
cool

In 2003, Fog Creek Software (aka Joel’s other baby) moved offices, and decided to ditch its internal T1 and look for a colocation provider. Joel was impressed with PEER 1 Hosting’s customer service, the shiny new data center in NYC, and PEER 1 Hosting even volunteered to host Joel on Software – for free!

When we decided to move our Stack Exchange Network to the East Coast to better serve our global customers, PEER 1 Hosting was the logical choice because of the success that Fog Creek had. We began to migrate part of the data center in May of 2010, and finalized the move of all live sites from Oregon in October of 2010. After all the sites were set up at PEER 1 Hosting, we noticed some awesome results and thus we started a discussion with PEER 1 Hosting about how to extend the same benefits to the community. …
