@PaulVargas I just ran across (sounds odd!) the Wikipedia "Betacode" page in German: much better than the English version! See the link to a "converter" at the bottom of the de page (perhaps you know it already?).

Also, just discovered today that the TanakhML site will show the Hebrew Bible in transliteration which I hadn't realized before. That could have saved some time, even if it uses lsquo and rsquo instead of proper ayin and alef.
