Q: Professors and theologians?

Peter TaylorI'm somewhat bemused by the "About" page of the main site, which says: This is a free, community driven Q&A for professors, theologians, and those interested in exegetical analysis of biblical texts. Is this a case of trying to find three categories of target audience for rhetorical eff...

Q: What do we want our FAQ to say

RichardWe have been in beta for over 50 days now and so far our FAQ has simply said: This is a free, community driven Q&A for professors, theologians, and those interested in exegetical analysis of biblical texts. We, as a community, have complete, free reign over this very first section of ou...

I've answered a few questions on this site by copying directly from Cassuto's commentary on the Bible or Alter's commentary to Psalms (with attribution of course)...should we be encouraging or discouraging these types of answers?
The question is pretty much stylistic...should I paraphrase/rewrite the block of text in my own words or is it preferable to use the exact quote?
I'm not talking about quoting a few lines, I'm talking about cases where I've copied multiple paragraphs, eg: hermeneutics.stackexchange.com/a/676/76

The standard SE answer is that it's best to summarize the article yourself. It makes for a better answer. Some people are really hard-lined about this. I'm not so much.

@Ami I appreciated the answer as is since it reaffirmed my critical observation about the passage and it's nice to have some authority behind it.
Also, since the book isn't easily available ($40 is a bit steep to buy on a whim), it's helpful to have the full quotation.
But I suspect rewording it in your own words would garner more votes than simply quoting the commentary.

@StackExchange I was wondering how to fix that. I'll take some time to think about it and see if I can make a first cut.

Personally, I really like the Judaism.SE FAQ. Simple, clean, easy to understand.
We probably should use our own meta decisions to build our list of "on topic" and "of topic" subjects. However, we don't really have a consensus on several of the issues.

Did you know about the Civic Duty badge? Don't you wish you had one? ;-)

:P
What really shocks me is that we only have one Enlightened
And only two Self Learners (You and me)
What's really crazy is that we only have five Vox Populi. That one is really easy.

Ami
I think it means we need more questions.
I don't think Vox Populi is easy to get on a site that only gets 2-4 new questions a day

Maybe so. But there's a bunch of old questions that could use votes, I'm sure. I'll give you a few of mine, if you'd like. ;)

@Richard I take my time reading questions and answers, so I don't vote often enough in a day. I hit the limit a few times on StackOverflow since there were so many good, short, and correct answers. Here: not so much.
