For what it’s worth, @JamesK, I am not a sailor, but we’ve owned a ship’s clock for well over three decades. And my wife’s parents weren’t sailors, but they too owned a ship’s clock for a previous few decades. As did my wife’s aunt and uncle.
That’s not to say that most adults are familiar with how their 4-hour cycle works, because I’m not arguing that our family is representative. But the set of people who serve or have served in navies makes your estimate that 99.9% wouldn’t understand at least somewhat of an overestimate.
