> I'm working on a very large VB6 project group and need RD's Code Explorer (folders) to keep me from losing my sanity but there's one project (a unit test project) that won't parse - loads of test classes that refuse to parse. The unit test suite runs as expected but RD is not happy with it. I need to continue to use the test suite but would need RD to ignore trying to parse it and go ahead and parse the other projects in the group. Is that possible? Can I use the '@IgnoreModule annotation?

1:50 PM
> Compare #3041, #1520, #2006 as well as #1966.

This is a long-standing issue in some way, jamming annotations in the files you want ignored is definitely a feasible workaround for VB6.

2:05 PM
Is there an inspection that flags a declarative ReDim... e.g. Dim foo(), ReDim foo1(0 to 10), since Option Explicit won't flag that?

it rings a bell, but I'm not sure right now

2:22 PM
> Curious about the parser error (and the code around it), since I'm not sure what legal VB6/VBA code we cannot parse.

Can you repro the parser error with a small example?

@BigBen IIRC we stopped reporting those as undeclared, but I don't think we're flagging them
That would be a good inspection to have, I think

> Can the test project be locked? We're not parsing source code for locked projects.
> Could you provide a log, on error level, say, so that we can see what is causing our parser to fail? If the information disclosed in the log is too sensitive, can you reproduce the problem with an artificial example?

Jamming the project with `@IgnoreModule` annotations will not help at all. This only affects the inspections and not the parser itself. Currently, the only way to make RD not parse a project is to lock the project, i.e. to _protect_ it with a password and to not enter that pass

So I'm trying to make the resolver a bit smorter by feeding in the supertypes for the document modules. I want to get idea whether I'm heading in the right direction.

@this You realize that I have an open PR for that?

In order to provide the correct supertypes, I need to show that this declaration implements interfaces that are defined in the host library's ComProject.
Doh
good thing I didn't waste much time on it

2:29 PM
It is not perfect, but gets most of the job done.
One kind of supertype it does not add is the hidden individual supertype for Access forms.

and embarrassingly I even approved it apparently two weeks ago

We simply do not have declarations for those.

well, i was considering updting the UserComProjectRepository to be more generic
that is, a generic ComProjectRepository, which can be filtered into User... or Referenced...

@Duga needs an :embarrassed: emoji
it's obviously been too long...

My reasoning is that document modules can only belong to one type of project, which is the host project. e.g. you cannot have a Access VBA project that contains Excel workbook and worksheet document modules or an Excel VBA project that contains Access forms/reports. So we need to identify the host project, get the ComProject for that host, then check against the CoClasses' implemented interfaces against the current declaration's chain of interfaces.

2:49 PM
Sorry I haven't been super-available and reviewing PRs lately...

@MathieuGuindon Life has a way of barging in. Besides, it's 2020!

1 hour later…
3:57 PM
2020 is 80% through, and yet I'm mentally still in April

4:38 PM
@MathieuGuindon I'm roughly 50% through life, yet mentally, I'm only about 25%, so it's not all bad. ;)

4:52 PM
Reading posts about others coding experiences is enlightening. "I did a thing, which at the time I didn't know it was called the Hippo Pattern, and this is how it aided me." helps me realize we're all figuring things out (faking it) as we go along.

5:11 PM

@IvenBach now I want to know what a hippo pattern is

^ same!

#funfact: hippos are not cute & slow. They can be very vicious and move fast. #youvebeenwarned

Hungry, hungry hippos...

6:02 PM
hippos are more deadly than most predatory animals
mostly because they are absolute tanks and can deal massive amounts of crush type damage

^ Badassery disguised as a plump rotund lumbering cutesy animal, which can enrage at a moments notice end your life.

~mumbles something about 1d3*12+1d20
2

1d2+85dmg is more accurate.

prolly, yea
depends a bit on whether you get hit by the humungous teeth or not

That's the variable 1d2 dmg. Really though it doesn't matter. You're screwed either way.

6:06 PM
actually, it matters if you're another hippo

@IvenBach see, I think they should have used hippos as the mascot instead of elephants. That's more accurate description of those who are willing to defend their home with deadly force. Hippos don't exactly rover around looking for trouble but just don't barge in their home.

Who uses elephants as their mascot?

@Vogel612 isn't that just because they have high (?) or low (?) AC which mean huge damage reduction.

that depends on the ruleset, doesn't it?

(some systems say high AC = better, other systems say low AC = better. I am never sure)
yeah

6:07 PM
high AC usually means less damage

the point being, another hippo would be pretty armored so lot of damage reduction from another hippo's attack

Some just say AC/DC ♫For those about to rock♪

lol

honestly, my first thought was "What's air conditioning got to do with it?"

yeah, this doesn't make much sense if you haven't done anything similar to DnD or RPG
(never really DnD'd, but some RPG when I was a young'un)

6:11 PM
Hippo fun fact: Hippos mark their territory by defecation. While depositing the faeces, hippos spin their tails to distribute their excrement over a greater area. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippopotamus#Social_spacing)
Their tail is the fan!

Played DnD ages ago. Made my own maps and everything (seems these days that kids buy maps??) I even knew some people who made their own dice out of paper and modeling clay! (Can't imagine that they were, um... fair, but d20 were hard to come by in those days)
@IvenBach That's really when it really hits the tail fan!

gives a new meaning to tailspin

Duck check: When a hosted document module is exported should it include the attributes?

I don't think so.
you would get it if you were exporting using Access' secret sauce export function, but not with VBIDE's native export function.

Exporting with Project Explorer includes it. I thought they were included as part of the RD export also.

6:18 PM
Has anyone used MS's PowerApps?
When connected to a db, it sounds like it might be a more modern version of Access for rapid development and easy deployment of front ends.

6:35 PM
@IvenBach for class and standard modules, yes. For document? pretty sure not.
@FreeMan sort of, yeah. The main obstacle is that it works easily as a single form, but if you need multiple tables, then it becomes painful. It also gives CDS the first class treatment, making it problematic if you have an existing database you don't want to export to CDS.

6:54 PM
@IvenBach they're not included because there's no way to import them back anyway

7:12 PM
Further thinking about it... The host application controls those object modules (Worksheet) there isn't any way they could be imported back in.
Now it's clear why no attributes are included for doccls modules.

yes. the host application is the only one that can create a document module. VBIDE knows diddly in that area.

I think I'm finally at a good point in my writing for explaining using RD for version control.

also, what is a Sheet1, exactly? Is a a.xlsx's Sheet1 like b.xlsx's Sheet1?
This works quite different from a Form_X in a.accdb which could be like the one in b.accdb.

I'm not sure I understand. Sheet1, assuming default naming, is a Worksheet object.

The point is that the contents of the Sheet1 can be different, even if the codebehind is identical otherwise
think about the data that's in one workbook but not another. Do we want to also copy the data there? Maybe. Maybe not. Don't know.

7:21 PM
Because not everything about the worksheet is included in the module. IE formulas aren't included, condition formatting is missing, etc...

We don't have that problem with an Access form because it's just a UI object with bunch of properties, no data mixed in
Yes, that's the other problem.

Everything required for the form itself is included as part of the export. :click: Ah. Yeah. Now I get what you're saying.

That's why I said you can't be sure that one's Sheet1 is like other's Sheet1.

:+1:

gee, I wish I could make a string enum in VBA....
sure I can make constants but they feel... loose.
not to mention the naming problem it introduces

7:25 PM
> It would indeed be very helpful see a log - the RD grammar is pretty mature now, it's been a while since we've seen a parse error. It's possible that some nuance specific to VB6 has been overlooked, as VB6 is a more recent addition to RD.

Private Const Foo As String = "Foo" '<-- problematic.
Private Const FooName As String = "Foo" ' Avoids the problem but now constant is longer than original string?!?

Why would the constant identifier being longer than the string it represent be a problem?

not to me. To my fingers.

syntax completion ftw?

@Vogel612 ISTR that they have a habit of biting people clean in half if they get too close too (despite hippos being vegetarian).

7:29 PM
with VBIDE's intellisense dumbisense, it's hit'n'miss

@mansellan for varying levels of "cleanly"

more likely, there'll be some up'ing or down'ing to get the right name

better than having the opportunity for a typo each time you need to use it

agreed

@this random thought (it's now years since I last used VBx) - could you pass a UDT, with "constant" property getters? Might be a dumb suggestion...

7:37 PM
have to instantiate & fill it

ah yeah, not static...

a better implementation (for some value of "better") would be a new standard module with properties.
hello, old friend, Constants!

Global FTW!!

IKR? in this case, I only need the constants within a single module so.... another module would defeat that goal

Huh. Turns out it takes a long time to initialise a 40TB RAID5. Who knew?

2 hours later…
10:16 PM
@this uhhhh... CDS?

Common Data Services
or if you prefer, SharePoint ReIncarnated, the Deluxe, Improved Brand New Works-For-Reals-This-Time Pinky Promise®™
2

So, essentially, I'd have to export from SQL Server to CDS to use PowerApps?
oh... sharepoint...

if you want the first class treatment
but you don't have to

meh... I don't have to fit my knees in there, the data can go cattle class, I s'pose

you stilll can use SQL Server in PA. However, there are more features and stuff that works with CDS but maybe not with other random connector.

10:21 PM
got it. ish...

and to be clear, it's not SharePoint - even that is 2nd class

ummm... hasn't SharePoint always been kinda 2nd class?

I guess you can think of it as SharePoint List without SharePoint?
IDK.
ooo, burn. Yes. SP is entirely problematic

Last place I worked, the "other guy" developed a bit of a SP front end and we imported/exported from the SQL Server to it. Seemed to work reasonably well. At least from the data perspective. I never dealt with the end user side.

see, that annoys me
"ooo, we got this cool technology! but it uses its own weird propiertary format so we guess we'll just export data from our junkyard and then import the responses back in!"
or to use a physical counterpart....

10:27 PM
Friends don't let friends SharePoint.

^

Actually, from what I understand, most of the annoyances in Teams (which I love) stem from it having a SP backend.

seriously?
now I like Teams even less....

Oh Teams is awesome, but it's doing SP stuff in the background. You never have to see it though.

I think Teams has lot of cool features but the instability worries me

10:30 PM
Hmm, never seen it be flakey, except perhaps mixing up someone's presence status.
When did you last try it? I hear it used to be problematic, but in the 6 months we've been using it its been a joy

well, maybe the word instability is not right one - it does not feel intuitive and can be confusing to use.
well, we use teams for our meetings
one perfect example --- I can invite anyone but teams won't even use my outlook contacts so I have to be careful to type in the correct email of the external contacts I want to invite.
other times, we would have meetings where we can't remote control or share screen and nobody knows why

The first might be because of a problem with your connector to Exchange. No idea about the second, never seen that.

still, the point is that there are little gremlins that makes it very annoying
I don't have to deal with that in our slack.

Bear in mind, "officially" the company still uses Rocket Chat (don't ask...) so anything would be better.

That said, we may eventually migrate away from Slack to Teams because as you correctly pointed out, Teams has been becoming more and more feature-rich
the fact it has "rocket" in the name makes it suspect. LOL

10:34 PM
I never used Slack, but I know it gets much love

teams ... is... a Problem ..
you can't mute calls, you can't reassign keybindings, you can't have push-to-talk

Rocket is fine. If you're visiting 2008.

the basic stuff of meetings is just. .. not quite working as it should

Wait, you can't mute calls?

everything else seems to be pretty useful

10:35 PM
Oh you mean stop it ringing?

nope... I mean staying in the call, but not outputting any of the incoming sound

ah ok
yeah

you can interestingly block incoming video

Teams is under heavy investment though, and they do seem to be, uh, "inspired" by competitors features, so... watch this space?

the problem is that most competitors don't have these features either

10:37 PM
The transcript feature is nice

because discord is better at video-calls than enterprise grade video call software
~sighs
oh well, they probably get around to it at some point

for me,I find transcript annoying
I wish they would just let us record without transcribing, sometime. Transcript is 100% useless when the call is mixed languages.

It would be nice if it could transcribe to the channel thread, so you can review at a later date. I hear that's coming.
I thought record and transcribe were independant?

relatedly, it's unnecessarily annoying (if not impossible?) to get the "reading experience" thingy to read in a language you know the document is in, but is not the language you have the teams application in

10:41 PM
@mansellan if it were, I'd like to know where. They replaced the record button with "record and transcribe"

Oh, one definite plus is that it'll do background replacement without needing a green screen or a quad core. Glares at Zoom

and when I click on it, Bill Gates pops in and says BOW TO ME YOU DUMB RUBES

@this Huh, TIL. We don't tend to record.

lot of time we do trainings or review deliverables with customers, so we record those kind of meetings. Useful for our workers to review later
@mansellan FWIW, Zoom are cool for calling your grandparents. But shame on you if you use it at work.
(and Xi would like to personally thank you for sharing your life with him)

@this Agreed. Not my choice. It's still a step up from Whereby.com...

10:44 PM
oh my. I haven't heard of Whereby.com. How many more collaboration software do we need?!?
it seems to be that everyone and their dogs is making a new collaboration software...

Fairly ironically, we're IP-heavy, and a lot of our business goes through the Middle Kingdom...

@this enough that we may find the best one and turn it into a monopoly, such that it may descend into mediocrity

@this Used to be called appear.in

@Vogel612 like Skype

And no, I'd never heard of it before either.
@this Is Skype still A Thing? ;-)

10:46 PM
Barely?

yeap, Skype is still "A Thing"™

Heading into MySpace territory...

for business, I think Skype is pretty much dead
now, MySpace isn't exactly a "collaboration software"

MS screwed the pooch on Skype. The nice thing was the decentralisation. And the first thng they killed.

You make it sound like it was accidental.

10:48 PM
I think it was probably mandated...

That'd be because ol'Stewie wants to show you what a petty dictator he is.

nah, it's probably because Microsoft isn't targetting end users ... at all
at least not anymore

IOW, they've gone full-on IBM

IBM never served end users, did they?

well, in the early 80s they kind of
i mean, they were the one who made PCs cheap and affordable and more importantly a commodity item.

10:55 PM
Atlassian have turned into dicks too. "Hey, we're focussing on cloud. You can either move, sacrifice your data sovereignty, and pay mucho $$$, or upgrade to Data Centre edition (minimum user tier 500, mucho $$$)"
Plenty of people mighty pissed with them right now.

Atlassian also has the huge issue of Australian Lawmakers

well, that's why they need their bit buckets. To pay for legal fees, right?

Atlassian are dead to me. Used to love that company :-(

did they get bought out?

Worse. They had an IPO.
3

10:58 PM
lol
~mumbles something about stack overflow inc.

well, going public tends to do funny things to a company's boardroom.

unfortunately you cannot repeat a message verbatim
~mumbles something about stack overflow inc.

Stack overflow usually happens when you recurse too much.
