None of these show up in VB6, likely because the IDs differ.

Visual studio sucks
@gitlost Pfft. Try the VBE.

This is an amazing post by @davidpine7. Pay close attention to the term "Dark Matter Developer" and if you haven't read the article, do so. I know some of these devs and there is no way in hell I would ever want to be there. https://medium.com/@davidpine7/upgrade-yourself-becoming-a-microsoft-mvp-5a61826de93f

To determine what went wrong we will need some more information. It would be great if you could go into the Rubberduck setting to enable logging, hit the refresh button again and post the log here. _Trace_ level would be ideal, but if you fear to leak too much information about your project on that level, _Warning_ or _Error_ might be sufficient.

Howdy @this. A question from reading the latest release from ThoughtWorks talks about domain driven scoped events. Would you say that the way RD is attempting to use events in context of parsing and resolving VBA code be similar to the direction ThoughtWorks is talking about? thoughtworks.com/radar/techniques/domain-scoped-events

@Duga i think it boils down to AV not having the script VS is supposed to have in the same place. I love blindfolded easter egg hunts!

1:37 PM
I got something done at work and posted a screenshot for my boss. I almost said "Look, Ma! No [element]!", when I realized she's old enough to be my mom, and I'm not sure how she'd take it...

Question for the brainy people....
I have an OP asking about programmatically (sp?) adding ActiveX control and associating it with an event. Also added programmatically.
So I have told them how to use the VBIDE
Now they have changed their initial query from simply Click type event to MouseMove
But would I have to add an API call for the mousestuff ..
I guess that is just more lines to go into VBIDE.CodeModule at the top
no? Apologies for splurge......

Hi, @ÁdámBukovinszki!

1:53 PM
@QHarr not sure I'd want to write metacode to do this kind of thing. It makes sense for writing code that are used at develop-time but this feels a bit too much like runtime code than develop-time code and for that reason I'd probably be using a class to template the active controls and their events.

Hi guys,
I'm stuck a bit with ActiveX scrollBars in Word.
Just posted the q: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/50351952/vba-word-how-to-get-the-value-out-of-an-inline-scrollbar-or-how-to-have-a-si
Is there somebody who can help me out?

@this Agreed. I guess with the advantages of being easier to extend/ re-use etc..? Any thing else?

@ÁdámBukovinszki Maybe. I can't, as I don't write VBA.
If you have an interesting C# question, I'm game :)

@DainIronfootIII Nah, I need to stick with Office + VBA for now, but thanks.

2:27 PM
Ok, i figured it.
Actually it is even simpler then in Excel VBA.
I have no idea though why it did not work with ActiveDocument.InLineShapes("name").value ..
But it works as activedocument.SB_Q1_B131.value

@ÁdámBukovinszki glad you figured it out.
ps welcome to the pond
@DainIronfootIII crisis nicely avoided.

@this Making progress on your whack-a-bug adventure?

no, AV's being pigheaded
we both know it has the midl.exe but it won't set up the environment it needs.
gee, this build process makes a house of cards look sturdy in comparison

well it used to be relatively simple ;-)

i'm getting compiler errors all over. :(
until a jerk came along and made it overcomplicated....
someone should shoot him.

[rubberduck-vba/Rubberduck] build for commit 40db879b on unknown branch: AppVeyor build failed
BUILD FAILURE!

3:38 PM
@Duga yeesh, message received. No messing w/ the environment.

and it does not help that MSFT decided it was a great idea to have different path to stuff on every system, because.... you know, flavors!

3:50 PM
Could shutting down SSMS without disconnecting beforehand from the server cause any issues?

Do it every day.

SSMS would be disposing its connections on shutdown, so no.

No issues yet..

I'd rather ask the question than be the duckhead that messes everything up.

3:52 PM
one could think the shutdown is faster & cleaner if you've manually disconnected first though

4:20 PM
The only thing I ever care about with SSMS is to not have a query running when I pull my laptop out of the docking station.

Is the proper nomenclature a Field or Column in SSMS?

SSMS is the client, you mean in SQL Server :)
and IMO that would be Column

SQL standard uses "column"
field is an Access thing

TYVM
ALTER TABLE foo DROP ColumnName; is the correct syntax to nuke a column?

yeah, I think so

4:31 PM
I messed up and didn't add NOT NULL when I added it.

there's this stupid quirk between column and constraint
no, I think you must say ALTER TABLE foo DROP COLUMN bar;

^
just saw that

because otherwise, it thinks you are dropping a constraint

I'm going to do my slow moving method to ensure I get it spot on.

on the flip, if you ALTER TABLE foo ADD bar; it is a column, not a constraint.
so ALTER TABLE foo ADD bar PRIMARY KEY (baz); is not legal.
yet ALTER TABLE foo DROP bar; is what you must do when bar is a constraint. Oh, T-SQL you're a riot!

4:35 PM
ALTER TABLE dbo.Foo DROP COLUMN [ IF EXISTS ] IsCompleted
Would there be issues for omitting IF EXISTS and the Column wasn't in the table?

you should get in habit of using the IF EXISTS
that makes your script a bit more idempotent

That's why I'm asking.

on the other hand, when you are doing DDL, they are destructive by nature so if data loss is going ot be a problem, you might rather want to get errors in your scripts instead of it running successfully and your data blown away
Personally, it's more likely we do want to blow away the data (and in case where there is a data loss, there are other script commands that moves the data to temporary table or whatever anyway) so having those errors ends up being unhelpful and for that reasons, IF EXISTS is a godsend, IMO.

Hi folks.

4:44 PM
hi!

So I've tried, after a while (of some months) my 4 unit tests :-D
Well...

@SonGokussj4 FYI I've merged the Rubberduck.Resources PR, you should be able to pull these changes and resume the translations now

@MathieuGuindon :) Nice! At first I went here to ask about that.

4:46 PM
@SonGokussj4 is the host document / VBAProject saved?

@MathieuGuindon I just opened it. On OneDriver.

is ThisWorkbook.FullName a local path?

Happening with 10 days older version of the file saved on Desktop too.

the exception should be handled though

?ThisWorkbook.FullName
C:\Users\jverner\Desktop\MatigueDev_v20180509_1821.xlsm

4:50 PM
k
not sure what's going on then

@IvenBach Can't you simply add the not null constraint to the column?

Of the Error window

@M.Doerner AFAIK, not possible to modify - ALTER COLUMN is basically replacing the column in its entirety.

Tried 5 months old version of my Excel file and it's the same when I run the tests. So I think it's either Duckie or some SW change on my Machine at work.
I'll try my personal laptop.

4:57 PM
That would be rather stupid. Adding a nullable column, consecutively updating it and then making it not nullable seems to be a standard technique for no-downtime-deploys, as far as I have read.

AFAIK you can't use ALTER TABLE to make a column non-nullable [if the table contains data]
you can make a column nullable, or add a nullable column without dropping the table, but adding a non-nullable column requires recreating the table

hm. pretty sure it doesn't -- as long there are no nulls in the data , table need not be recreated
I've done it few times
what you can't do, though is put it in some other ordinal position or alter only the nullability -- you must alter the data type and nullablity and all other properties in one go

You obviously cannot add a non-null collumn without default value to a table with existing data. That would immediately violate the constraint.
If I understand the documentation of ALTER TABLE correctly, you have to provide the column data type when changing from NULL to NOT NULL, but it will not really change anything if you provide the same data type as before.

IOW best is to actually know whether you need a column to be nullable when you first create the table =)

Okay so:
v2.2.6672.28001 - Laptop - OK
v2.2.6702.24002 - Work PC - Crit Error
v2.2.6708.13023 - Laptop - OK - BUT (Rubberduck - Unit Test - ... no strings?, when I press the first empty space and Test Explorer Shows, There are #TestExplorerOutcome, #TestExplorerQualifiedModuleName, ...)
v2.2.6708.13023 - Work PC - Crit Error (same text missing)

So it's because of my Office 2013 Virtual Win 10 on Linux through Oracle ... Hmm... Why the hell...

5:10 PM
> Office 2013 Virtual Win 10 on Linux through Oracle
uh

What I meant with not really changing anything is that it only adds the constraint and does nothing else.

On my Centos7 Work PC running newest Oracle Virtual Machine with 1709 Windows 10 and Office 2016 32bit. To be specific. :)
But it's weird. I would give you a finger that it worked before. At least it's only testing :) Which I didn't do much for now.

oh this is scary
and IMO rather likely related to the reason why the typelib API can't find the module
not sure what we can do there
other than saying "running in a VM on a non-Windows host isn't a supported scenario. may or may not work"

It worked (all of it) without a problem till now. Well, last time I tested the Tests it was around January.

i run my vm off vmware and that wasn't a issue.

5:18 PM
that would have been before the typelib api was merged
@this linux host?

basically

@MathieuGuindon What about these?

The only one that has the red strip all the way to the left.

hey @WaynePhillipsEA

@SonGokussj4 IDK.. missing key in the .cs file, maybe?
haven't used resxmanager in a while, IDK

Okay. I'll ignore it for now. :) And continue with the translation.

Good job. Thanks for the work to get it ready.

@SonGokussj4, you using the latest RD build? I put a PR in a few days back that was supposed to fix this for @IvenBach who had a similar problem

5:23 PM
@SonGokussj4 FWIW RubberduckUI.resx is going to be further broken down in the near future
@WaynePhillipsEA I only got to it and merged it yesterday though

@WaynePhillipsEA Yes. As written above, I've tried older versions, then updated it to the newest that is downlodable for now and still the same (with broken texts)
@MathieuGuindon Which means, for me, that I should.... Speed it up? Push regularly? Ignore RDUI.resx? :)

the faster the changes are in, the easier it'll be, yeah
I'll wait for your stuff and move on to tackle other issues, no rush

@SonGokussj4 so you're on v2.2.0.3242?

@SonGokussj4 I was having some issues with that. I renamed VBAProject to something since it looks like the ambiguity at not knowing which one was the correct VBAProject was causing the issue.
Wayne's already brought you up to speed it seems.

@WaynePhillipsEA Yeah: Rubberduck v2.2.0.3242-pre

5:30 PM
hi @IvenBach could you test if my PR fixed your issue?

In "About" there is v2.2.6708.13023

Yep. Should be able to a bit later.

cool, thanks

@MathieuGuindon So do some translation, Push to my repo and create PR to your Rubberduck/next repo?

5:33 PM
@SonGokussj4 please try to step through the loop in the Get method that is failing. The loop should be working through each module in your project until it finds the TestModule1 (or not in this case). But hopefully by stepping through the code you might get a clue as to what is wrong

@IvenBach Sorry for potential stupid question, how do I rename VBAProject? I tried rename the TestModule1 to TestModule01 and different filename.

Tools>XXX Properties>Project Name
XXX will be whatever the project name is.

In your pastebin log, it looks like it is v2.2.0.3210. That one wouldn't have my PR

The non-unique name was what, apparently, was causing my conflict with unit tests. Changing it resolved the issue.

Ow wow. Seeing this for the first ime. :D Sorry.

5:40 PM
@SonGokussj4 wait are you using a local build or a prerelease build? If both are registered that could explain some of the problems

I've had many moment of "How long has this been here?"
Hope my problems help you get unit tests working. #HoorayForProblems

@IvenBach Since yesterday :)

@MathieuGuindon On all my computers I try to use the newest Prerelease builds all the time. No builds. Don't know how to do that. Yet.

(although, I believe @this' Deployment stuff might be preventing these issues now)

@IvenBach It WORKED.

5:41 PM
:+1:

@SonGokussj4 FWIW, doesn't RD rename do that?

@WaynePhillipsEA Yeah it was a log just before I've tried the newest build. Sorry for misinformation.

@SonGokussj4 the machine you use to modify the resx files would need to have a debug build, not a prerelease

Well I'm modifying that on 3 machines. I have it saved on OneDrive.
Just pushing the changes won't work?

5:43 PM
It would... but don't you want to test it?

@MathieuGuindon So it seems I'll be re-creating the table...

@IvenBach No.
You can set a default value on the column.

How do I accomplish that?

@MathieuGuindon no, if there's a per-machine registeration, it'll trump. the deployment does per-user

So, you could set 0 on it now, and then write a script to update the value, or something.

5:45 PM
@DainIronfootIII If you mean THIS, that doesn't do nothin'

@SonGokussj4 :(

But hey, I didn't even know that I can rename a project.

By nothing I mean - I click on it and it just dissapears.

@MathieuGuindon That would be great. :-D To test it... Hope there is a really comprehensive tutorial how to build RD for that.
Because I see this and my stomach just got worse. :D

@DainIronfootIII Silky smooth Commands completed successfully.
Stuff is so much easier when you can understand what you're doing!

@SonGokussj4 the important point is that you should unregister your old machine-level RD
and set the execution policy. once done, it's automated.

@this By simple words - I should uninstall Prerelease version, have admin rights and then try the tutorial for building?

the about box showing a non-zero revision number would be a debug build, unless I broke something

5:53 PM
both prerelease and release build should be uninstalled

Sorry but the whole Build / register / COM / hklm process gets totally around me. I know some programming, I build PCs, I know HW, I remember and know how to install Win95 - Win10 and how to set up network, virtual machines etc...

BUT - I didn't build ever a single thing on PC and I've never tinkered with powershell. I'm more of a linux guy because of my work now.

it's only complicated because you have a older machine-level install

What's older machine-level install? O.O

the whole point of this riff-raff in the deployment is support per-user install
you know how RD used to required admin privileges just to install?
it doesn't anymore.

I know.

5:55 PM
speaking of registration, my newly setup dev VM can build and register, but not F5-debug

all because of that riff-raff.

I have the lastest prerelease per user.

oh ok

installed. Because I don't have admin privileg. on my work computer.

and prelease was downloaded?
i thought you had a per-machine install, my bad

5:56 PM
I go here like 3 times a week and installing the newest builds all the time.
https://github.com/rubberduck-vba/Rubberduck/releases

@MathieuGuindon how do you usually set up to f5?
so you download it, ok
it might be better to use git for that.

I don't do anything special...

don't you have to set up the command line arguments?

basically if I start Excel manually then the VBE happily loads Rubberduck. F5-debug launches Excel, but then the VBE can't find Rubberduck.
@this I did...

ah i know why
you are running VS as admin
and since you F5 Excel
it is inititated as admin

5:58 PM
wait you mean we no longer need to run VS as admin!?!

so you're now on the wrong side of the track
uh, i still run it as admin for like forever

damn now I need to reconfigure my taskbar shortcuts lol

I've just setup/loaded two projects called VBAProject in the same Excel instance, and I'm no longer seeing the typelib API issue that IvenBach reported. So I think the main ambiguity issue is fixed. However, I found a related issue, in that ModuleInitialize is not running, or more correctly, the ModuleInitialize is running, but not the one in the correct project that houses the unit test

not sure if it's even possible to run it as non-administrator.

huh, confused now

5:59 PM
TBH, I never had any good luck running VS as normal user
for any projects
