@NorthLæraðr the last time I remember saying north here was yesterday, but with no '@'. I had no intention of calling you lol
Since I can't reply to my own message, I'll just quote myself: "@ jafe it still says "north-northeast" lol"

Q: Solve the magic square

Culver Kwan My friend gave me the following magic square to solve $$\begin{bmatrix}\frac23&5&?\\\frac19&?&?\\?&?&?\end{bmatrix}$$ I can solve it. Can you? You must provide logical reasoning in your answer to get the green checkmark.

'Stay to have something to eat and drink' = 'supporter'?
I can see 'sup' & 'porter' or 'supper' but cannot see how any of these fit the clue exactly. Can anybody explain?

7:29 AM
"Stay" means "something that serves to support something else", as in "mainstay" or a stay of a ship
so that's the definition
"have something to eat" is SUP (a verb meaning "to eat supper")
and "drink" is PORTER, a type of ale

7:47 AM
I see - the alternative definition of SUP is to eat (not just to drink). Thanks for the help.

Q: Largest smallest unattainable score in Scrabble

happystarConsider the following Scrabble board: We can play NO for 1 point, AI for 2 points, NOSE for 3 points etc as indicated on the right. All this obviously depends on having the correct letters on your rack (not shown). Eventually we will reach a number N such that it is impossible to score exactly ...

Jeremy DoverThe answer to this puzzle is a list of seven thematically related words or proper names or phrases. Each of these is clued cryptically, and the theme is to be determined. Display mathsTake a number between 2001 and 2100 inclusive. Cube the digits of the number and add them together, then repeat the process with the new sum and restart the process over and over. @msh20 Yup!
(I was surprised this one took so long to fall.)

@GarethMcCaughan I was looking for an adjective, not a noun, for "(that's) absurd".

Ah! (I don't think my def is unfair, but my apologies if you disagree.)

Yeah, the def was confusing to me as well

@oAlt @jafe Also, you can reply to your own message too.
@Randal'Thor like this

@jafe testing
hah, nice

9:04 PM
@GarethMcCaughan I don't disagree. I just didn't think that way at first. Or second.

@jafe It gives you the DONG notification as well.

Jolly good. (Confusing is fine. Unfair isn't. I am happy if I achieve the former but not the latter.)

@GarethMcCaughan I wouldn't call paradoxes absurd, but that might be just because I've done some formal studies of mathematical logic. (Which most people in the world haven't, but probably several people in this room have.)

Avi
This statement is false.

The next statement is false. The previous statement is true.

9:14 PM
brain explodes

Avi
Isn't that more of a cascading evaluation

... or did it? since it may be false

Avi
This statement is a paradox.
if false, then it's false
rip

please... have mercy

Avi
if true, then it's false
wait....
if true, then it's paradoxically not paradoxical?
thus, true

9:18 PM
brain re-forms, only to explode again

Avi
so if false, then false. but if true, then true.
so it's like schrodinger's box
except we already opened it, and we still don't know what's inside

@Avi Wrong field.
Schrodinger's box is physics.
This is philosophy ... or maths or something ...

Avi
the presence of a cat inside the box is determined at the moment it is observed

Any attempt to classify this "discussion" will not end well

I guess Schrodinger's box is also a thought experiment, making it maybe philosophy too.

9:20 PM
Maybe he meant Pandora's.

But it's describing something in physics.

Avi
whereas the truthiness of "This statement is a paradox." is determined when determined
since it has yet to be determined, it is in a state of being determined both ways
"This statement is a paradox." <- This statement is a parabox
= paradox + Pandora's box
let's not open this can of worms any further

pandoradox

groan

Pandora was the first woman. Schrodinger's was the first cat. Put them together and you get cat+woman=Catwoman. Ergo, sum.

9:25 PM
That second statement though ...

Yeah, he used a very old cat in his thought experiment.

If it was that old, it'd be already dead for sure.

Not if it was magical

can of worms is clearly cryptic wordplay for KANISTER

Which is an anagram of arse knit.

9:30 PM
Which is worms if you've got flystrike.

so woollen boxers... which brings us to schrödinger's box (or was it pandora's)

Flystrike is an anagram of Atlas. (That felt risky.)
^ woollen boxer

@Randal'Thor I don't get it. I see it's an anagram of felt risky, but what's Atlas got to do, got to do with it?

wouldn't want to face that in the ring

@msh210 Sky lifter.

9:33 PM
Ahh.

@jafe What about in the field?
Then you can invert it.

I spent way too long finding this: THESPHINXSLAIR anagrams to HIT SIX SHRAPNEL

@Randal'Thor I did wonder about that, but I remark that the very beginning of one of the OED's definitions for "paradox" is "An apparently absurd or self-contradictory statement or proposition". (I've done some mathematical logic myself, which will not surprise you, and I have at least three books on my shelves that deal at least briefly with paraconsistency.)

Six Hares Plinth?

@bobble also to The Sphnix's Lair

9:42 PM
yes it does

@GarethMcCaughan The OED being written for a more general audience than mathematical logicians :-) (And yes, I expected that.)

CCCC: Falconer, led by first murderer, having arguments any which way (7)

Avi
o no

"opera" for OP+OP - unfair or not?

Avi
how does era -> OP?
or is it op from beginning to end

9:55 PM
plural of "opus"

Avi
hmmmm
I think unfair
because opera would clue OPUSOPUS
I suppose, or do you sopus
@msh210 is this PARADOX
>:(
time to decipher the wordplay
wait, no, that was the last CCCC

there's a writer named Ian Falconer... the first murderer was Cain... unfortunately it doesn't seem "cainian" means anything AFAICT

Avi

the sphinx's lair

10:10 PM

the fact that you have "puzzled" and "puzzlers" next to each other is an indication to go for an &lit

Avi

hmm no cain was definitely the killer
