Q: Cover 63 squares of a chess board, differently

QuuxplusoneIn this other puzzle, ThomasL asks for three similar pieces which can be arranged to exactly cover all of an 8x8 chessboard, except for a single square — for any of the 64 possible single squares. I follow this up by asking: Suppose we don't require the pieces to be similar in shape. Can you fin...

Q: A mind-blowing riddle!

Ébe Isaac A healthy start to begin with A friend you’ll meet midway In the end he becomes a tree You’ll soon be blown away What word is referred here?

the word obviously ends with "ent"
because he "becomes a tree"
Amazement, bewilderment, astonishment, wonderment?
can't figure out the wordplay for the life of me
unless it's won + derm + ent
where derm is a contraction of dermis (skin), becomes a tree -> ent, won -> winning is healthy
/good for you
also possibly portent, but I doubt it
"portly" though
Be will sounds like "be well"
be well derm ent
nah, it's more like buh wil derm ent - I'm seeing things that aren't there
@GarethMcCaughan Is it possible to center align the text for a riddle?
I tried <div style="text-align:center">... text ...</div> but that just made everything blend together

Avi
5:09 PM
which fond looks better for ~20 lines of text?

The second, but simply putting an entire puzzle into MathJax if it's not necessary is annoying, so make sure it's necessary

Avi
I want it centered
it won't center without mathjax

I agree that the second of those looks better.
And I don't think there's any way to get centred text in SE questions other than MathJax.
@Avi If you don't mind literally every part of it being a stretch you could make it BEWILDER = be well / Will / elder, assuming you have a friend called Will which isn't particularly unlikely. But, again, literally every part is a stretch: "be well" and "elder" are both only approximated, there's nothing specifically friend-ish about the name Will, and "bewilder" and "blow away" are different.

Avi
"blown away" in surprise is a thing, though, I'm pretty sure
bewilderment/bewildered is more confusion than surprise, I do admit

Avi
5:31 PM
brothers' is pronounced the same as "brothers", correct?

Avi

Avi
stop abusing my poor cipher
I mean that in the sense of "unfortunate", not "conceived without proper consideration"
Describes baby conceived without proper consideration! (4)
describes baby (poor - no money), conceived without proper consideration (as in a poor idea)
(ddef) &lit
@Deusovi is it valid
final &lit definition is "unfortunate"

unfortunate is not 4 letters though

Avi
the definition of "poor" can be "unfortunate", which describes a baby conceived without proper consideration
the solution itself is POOR (ddef) &lit.

Yes, I know what you intended the solution to be. Not sure if that all ties together properly though

Avi
@msh210 C4 hint please :)

7:03 PM
@Avi I figured I'd wait a bit longer. But if you (plural) want…

I like to disambiguate the two with ye/y'all
though "ya" also works, I guess

I typically say you (general) and you (specific) when I'm talking

too verbose for me

@Avi I definitely don't know everything! I've heard a lot of people say that they thought I was older before, though - no idea why
also that just looks like a double definition, not an &lit? except "describes baby" doesn't have the right part of speech

@JohnDvorak Like I said, when I'm talking. 1 extra word doesn't take all that long to say

7:10 PM
No preference from me as to whether we get a C4 hint now or not. I have one idea that seems definitely not to work and nothing more, at present :-).

@Deusovi your puzzle looks solved, that didn't take long lol.
@GarethMcCaughan that's more than I :P
But then again, I've never been any good at solving C4s

@dcfyj yep, seems so! that one's meant to be fairly easy
just an idea I had that I thought was neat

Yeah, from what I recall yours aren't typically simple

I was aiming for lower difficulty with this set. I... did not succeed in some places

Yeah, That was too enigmatic for me :P but I've never been that good at the puzzles on here

Perhaps Gareth is the "Primal Scream pro"
when was the last time you yelled into the void?

@Phonon yep, seems to be down, unfortunately

Not really into primal screams, I'm afraid. It's interesting that msh chose to link to my (very out of date and rarely updated) website rather than just saying "Gareth"; I expect there's some significance to that, but offhand I'm not sure what.

@Deusovi yeah :/ did you ever get around to playing Recursed?

(I have one conjecture but with no confidence at all.)
(actually a pair of similar conjectures)

Avi
8:02 PM
... but have you ever screamed angrily at the void?

No, I don't think I have. Sorry.

Avi
I guess that means you're the apologist for an unpredictable treatment, perhaps
@msh210 GARETHHHH (ddef)?

Ah, that's obviously it.

Avi
Used to be a primal scream pro in my mind, but then apologized for removing that idea from my mind
scream pro*=comparers

@GarethMcCaughan I'd imagine the answer has to do with your field(s) of expertise

8:09 PM
That's my two similar conjectures.

Looks like the last time you updated your page was in 2016, you're slacking! :P

@Phonon Yep, I've played it! It's a pretty good game.

@Deusovi sweet! really liked it as well ;)

Oh, I've seen that game, it looks super interesting
I'd forgotten about it honestly lol

Anything else on the same wavelength you've played recently?
@dcfyj should definitely go back to it ;)

8:12 PM
Go back? I don't even own it lol

I don't think I updated much in 2016, either.

@Deusovi Interesting
As I recall, didn't you say you weren't fond of The Witness?

8:16 PM
@Avi um…
no.

Avi
:(
VTC too broad

@dcfyj No? I enjoyed The Witness a lot.

Weird, I could've sworn you'd said at some point that you didn't particularly like it. Which I thought was odd at the time (especially more so now that I've played it)

8:32 PM
I don't think so? I didn't like the audio logs or videos, but I thought the puzzles were great

Yeah, I'm still annoyed that I couldn't solve the desert without help

Avi
desert?
enigmash is pretty ok

The desert area in the witness

Avi
oh, that thing

There was a discussion of The Witness back in late January of last year, in which (1) Deusovi participated and (2) someone else (Eric Tressler) said he wasn't fond of The Witness.
("fine, but it got a little bit monotonous")
@dcfyj Is it possible that that's what you're remembering?

8:34 PM
@GarethMcCaughan Note: I wasn't remotely anywhere near this site at any time last year

You might have read through TSL transcripts, though :-)

Prior to today, my last chat is in 2018
It was something that was said while I was visibly in chat

Well, I just put "the witness" into the TSL search and it didn't come up with anything else promising :-).
@Deusovi Should I infer from your currently ongoing puzzle series that you're a fan of Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes?
In particular, would you expect it to provide good entertainment of an evening for two adults and a grumpy but highly intelligent 13-year-old?

Avi
grumpy but highly intelligent
reminds me of myself
what was I doing at 13....

Sure, sounds like it would be fun for you.

Avi
8:39 PM
oh yeah, definitely fits
I was probably 100x more clever before undergoing severe sleep deprivation in high school to finish absurd history assignments

Alternatively don't procrastinate?

Avi
There are brainteasers I solved as a 6 year old that I can't solve now :x
@dcfyj Procrastination wasn't the cause; my history class gave equal work as all my other classes combined

That doesn't bode well for you if it's a consistent degradation of skill lol
@Avi oof, mean teacher

Avi
I think I've reached rock bottom

(just to be explicit, the grumpy 13-year-old is my daughter, not me :-).)

Avi
8:42 PM
@dcfyj mean series of teachers* - that statement was equally valid for grades 9-12
Gareth, yes

@Avi So no adults like history at your school, check

Avi
Calculus was a breeze compared to history

@Deusovi No, you definitely come across as a college student to me. A very saavy one at that

Avi
@dcfyj nah, the few people who did like history were all top 10 because that was the determining factor for your grade, basically

@Avi I was making the assumption that you're in high school, thus why I said Adults didn't like history

Avi
8:44 PM
ahhh
I thought you meant it like, "People who are now adults that were once at your school all hate history because of that series of classes"
which is fairly accurate except for a few exceptions

Imagine being old

Nope, too much depth in that reading lol
@North depends how you define "old"

Avi
@North I'm feeling it at 22
now I just have to cash in on my brain

@dcfyj I'm still in HS, that's all I'll say
I'm old enough to use this site, even in Europe

@North Well the question is are you younger than me or not.

8:53 PM
@Mithical I'm working under the assumption that you're Mithrandir, so he's probably younger by the way he's talking

Aye, that's me.

@Mithical I believe I am younger than you

...how old are you?

@dcfyj How can everybody tell I'm younger by the way I speak
@Mithical 16

All my rileys are at +10 lol

I have to confess that having seen the answer I'm a little tempted to downvote it :-).
Rileys are very popular.

Avi
What did you think the answer was?

I didn't have any particular opinion about what the answer was.

Avi
9:06 PM
ok, fair

I just find the actual answer unsatisfying.
Maybe because I'd never even heard of a key component of it.

Avi
What would have been a satisfying answer
ahaaa
but now you know!
spreading knowledge one puzzle at a time
frankly I just found out about them today and figured that people who live in cold places might like to know

Also, the solution doesn't seem like it fits the description all that well, even with a bit of poetic licence. "On the face"? In what sense have the brothers taken the sisters "from their beds"? How do the brothers have any responsibility for what happened to the sisters? Etc.

Avi
the sisters bed within the brothers
a "face" is a side, inside or outside
maybe stricter mathematically but I'm taking a healthy dose of artistic license
in any case, it's not like I could've just made a PSA on a puzzling site
so I made a puzzle out of it
I have a better puzzle coming up soon if I can make the numbers work out x.x

anyway, enough grumbling :-). AFK for a bit now.

Someone in my history class asked this and I didn't know what to say
If you're born in Jeruselum, are you considered Israeli?

....yes?

Okay

Why wouldn't you be...?

Wikipedia saith: "Children born in Israel who have never acquired another citizenship are eligible to apply for Israeli citizenship between their 18th and 21st birthday if they have lived in Israel for over 5 years"

Bc they were making some bs statement that they would be Jewish and I'm like no, you're born Jewish or convert into Judaism

9:44 PM
Jewish and Israeli are entirely separate (though related) things.
(not that I imagine anyone here doesn't know that)

Okay I just had to double check
