I'm not sure if "Take note..." would qualify as a metapuzzle. I'd have to see the solution first, of course, but at the moment it doesn't seem like one.

Q: Tic-Tac-Toe Without a Predefined Board

greenturtle3141On a warm and uneventful summer day, John and Mary passed the time by playing games of Tic-Tac-Toe, taking sticks and drawing in the soil. 5:26 AM
So no-one has solved the CCCC yet? I'll take a stab.

@MOehm Gareth and I have both likely solved it but been too busy to write another.

I had has also solved it yesterday, but didn't post it, because my repository of clues that have passed my personal QA had run dry. I'm at work now, where I've got another repository, so I'll post it now.
@Rubio I think it's CANCELLER - [c]ELL[s] in CANCER

And so it is.

CCCC: Search silver lining for last sign of hope. (6)

for any quibblers, CANCEL can explicitly be to mark a ticket as used or invalid, though finding that specific definition/sense may take some searching. I forget which dictionary I finally found it explicitly in.

5:33 AM
"Compostez votre billet", as the signs in the Métro in Paris say.
The technical term is probably to invalidate the ticket, but canceller is clear from the context. I take it to be one of the little boxes that print a timestamp on the ticket.

CANCEL is usually a stamp or mark, but I did find the specific mention to perforation, i.e. literal "punching" of a ticket
a canceller can be such a device for doing that, or (presumably) a person who does so

Hmm..Didn't even thought of that word. I was thinking about a tool to punch tickets :p
A ticket punch (or control nippers) is a hand tool for permanently marking admission tickets and similar items of paper or card stock. It makes a perforation and a corresponding chad. A ticket punch resembles a hole punch, differing in that the ticket punch has a longer jaw (or "reach") and the option of having a distinctive die shape. A ticket punch resembles a needle punch in that it makes a distinctive pattern in the item punched, but differs in that it makes a chad. == Uses == Ticket punches are widely used to mark railway passenger tickets, particularly if it is important when and where the...

Wow that was quick @Sphinx
And woo, new puzzle!

6:43 AM
@BeastlyGerbil I can see a lot of binaries in there :-)

@awesomepi unfortunately, it happens...

@Techidiot do you know? (Hehehe) Lets see how far you get with that ;)

oolsoogfinesohck is what I have for the outer bars of dots(B&W) which seems kind of anagram of a message.

But, I am sure you won''t use anagrams of a message. So, there must be a start and end indicator.

6:54 AM
You got it right started wrong place
Look at the circles in the side

I can see double || bars which I thought was right place

That marks the end
You are one letter off
Apart from that good start. Now you just have to figure out what that string means. (And yes no anagram)

OW PUNS

Hmm..olsoogfinesohko?

Wrong way

6:56 AM
Normally I enjoy puns. But O_O

@Mithrandir hehe I was quite proud of those
They were extremely bad ones :P
My favourite is the poet one

lol.. OK HOSEN IF GOOSLO is the reverse..

So close
Shift the other way
Aka start to the right of the double lines

koolsoogfinesohc - > CHOSEN IF GOOS LOOK

Umm, I think you may have made a mistake with s
Should be r

7:02 AM
chosen if Go or Look ?

Yep
Well I meant it the other way round 'Look or go if chosen'
But you should still get it

But...01110011 is S :-/

Oh ok my mistake then. I'll fix it later today

So, is that it?

The next bit should be easy

7:06 AM
Bad Gerbil! No pellet!

:P
@Techidiot yeah that's the phrase needed. Figure out what it means

It reminds me of OEIS sequence - Look and say
In mathematics, the look-and-say sequence is the sequence of integers beginning as follows: 1, 11, 21, 1211, 111221, 312211, 13112221, 1113213211, ... (sequence A005150 in the OEIS). To generate a member of the sequence from the previous member, read off the digits of the previous member, counting the number of digits in groups of the same digit. For example: 1 is read off as "one 1" or 11. 11 is read off as "two 1s" or 21. 21 is read off as "one 2, then one 1" or 1211. 1211 is read off as "one 1, one 2, then two 1s" or 111221. 111221 is read off as "three 1s, two 2s, then one 1" or 312211. The...
But, that may not be it

Nope
This is steganography if that helps

The design is the mad ravings of a broken mind. 1+1=2, obviously. QED

Logic

7:09 AM
Yep

So, 1 + 1 = LOGIC?

No! You have the rest of the circle to complete yet! :P
Everything in the circle is involved
Now you need to work out which logic

Now, that sounds good. :) 1+1 = 1 logical way could be TRUE AND TRUE = TRUE
So, I believe the pairs are TRUE/FALSE

Nope
Check the circles in the left of the main one
What might that V mean?
If you figure out the circles, you will know where to look next for the rest of the puzzle

I see the pairs of squares in the V shape inside the circle..

7:13 AM
Not relevant
That was just the only way they would fit :P
I'll give you a clue: the outermost ring of the circle on the left could have an 'I' in it
Gtg to go in a sec. I'll try and leave the gate open for you to solve (clue). I'll check back in a couple of hours for progress

For now, I will post a partial with whatever I found. Someone else can take it ahead if not me.

2 hours later…
9:46 AM
@boboquack fyi we indeed know where to go, not quite how to get there (there's two possibilities in mind)

10:19 AM
Any progress?

Nope. Everything I tried led me to gibberish
Let the better brains dig in. May be I am not seeing something there .:-)

Hi Sid

GaMen

Sid
This month, I have been just breaking things. First, my laptop got wrecked and now, the keyboard of my home computer just fell off...

12:31 PM
How do you manage? lol

Just stop touching electronics

Especially the laptop, that was weird.

Sid
No, I am at home. So, the keyboard was easily managed. As for the laptop, I don't know how that happened.

Hello. I tried starting a chat in the philosophy stackexchange, but it opened it in the mathematics one. Does anyone know why this happened, and how it to move it?

Sid
@n_palum Good idea. I will try that.

@user193319 I think you are in a wrong room for that question. But, you may go ahead and give it another try

@user193319 I'm wondering why you're asking that in a puzzling chat rather than in the chat you accidentally typed it into?

user278890
@Sid I have no idea what "Deus" is (anagram for used ? sued ?).

Sid
Well, you will know soon, sir.

@sp3 It's the third to last body paragraph, it tells you what to do in a roundabout way.

@SveinungHelsing A shortened name for @Deusovi, which is an anagram of 'devious'.

user278890
@Sid If you're referring to this, then I can say that this is probably not(*) a metapuzzle, because the answers are not seperate, and there's no hidden theme inside them, or additional components.

user278890
[*: My notion of "not" is as per the usual puzzle hunts(MIT/SUMS); this is rather cultural one; not my personal unique opiniion. Also, it may qualify as Shell Meta, but definately not as normal meata]

Sid
Um, the answers are separate. Well, yes , there is no hidden theme, I will give you that one.

@dcfyj He's in Chicago which is just in the beginning of Central time

Ah right.
@SveinungHelsing Probably because you're not addressing every line of the riddle (which is how we usually do things on this site) and because some of your answers are rather snarky and could be taken as rude.

You could kind of see metacryptic as a metapuzzle, if you consider each cryptic clue a puzzle. But they're awfully small to be considered puzzles in their own right, and it's a bit weird for every "puzzle" to be basically the same mechanic - in that sense that wouldn't really be a metapuzzle in the usual sense.

user278890
@dcfyj It's completely over me how to explain "most who come to defeat me don't expect to win.", or this "Many try, many fail, many almost succeed/but inevitably they're frustrated and leave." .

1:15 PM
That's pretty obvious considering what the answer you picked is...

If it's over you, you're not obligated to answer at all, and if you choose to do so, it's not up to you whether people up or downvote

user278890
@dcfyj That's exactly what I mentioned in the last line.

That doesn't mean you should ignore the line completely though.

CCCC solution- FORAGE - (For+Ag+E(Last of hope) def- Search)

Hi @BeastlyGerbil

also last "sign of hope" seems a bit stretchy to me (although forage does look correct)

AG (silver) is lining (i.e., lies inside) FOR+E (for last-sign-of-HOPE).

@Sid not or. There is a logic gate symbol in the picture which is what you need

That is what I don't quite understand, though. I think lining works for that

I also don't get sick that often though

So, basically what you are saying is, a metapuzzle is one where there are different kinds of puzzles and then, the answer to each somehow contribute to a final answer?
Also, Hi!

2:14 PM
@Deus What about the answer he posted here?

It's gone

I know
I mean it's supposed to be undeleted right?

That's the basic idea, yeah. They don't have to be different kinds of puzzles. What matters is that the answers are taken together and combined somehow.
I'll go undelete and make it CW. Would one of you mind cleaning it up a bit?

huh, strange

I don't see any ellipsis in the gravatar list, but I'm in a desktop browser with a reasonable amount of space.

@GarethMcCaughan How did you get that one? Did you knew Chinese numerals?

2:43 PM
@GarethMcCaughan I wasn't intending on posting a solution :P (not really a fan of that sort, much less so if it's a bit of a hit or miss depending on knowledge)

@Techidiot "Know" would be a huge exaggeration, but I remember the first few being basically tally-marks. The shapes in the puzzle are clearly mirrored twice; if you undo that you get (kinda) 1,2,3 tally-marks at the start, so it's an obvious guess.
@Sp3000 Yes, I agree, that sort of knowledge-based puzzle is a bit unsatisfactory.

Okay. I stand by my statement of you being master :)

I second that

No, we're not talking about what we are, we're talking about a puzzle
"to understanding" wouldn't be a grammatically correct definition

which puzzle?

Is "unless" -> NE?

"to" might be just a connector

Beastly's, I haven't looked at it, so I can't say more

@Sp3000 unless might be not equals or not true (NE) not sure though

@Techidiot I know. Just letting you know, to understanding, doesn't work, understanding or to understand would though.
