Q: Is it inappropriate to tell my boss that "baby talk" is unprofessional?

AcheronMy boss is a great guy. Probably my favorite boss I've ever had, both professionally and personally. There is one thing that's very strange about him. At work, he often uses "baby-talk" phrases. Here are a few examples of phrases I've heard him use in the last several weeks: "Potty" instead of

Question: Apart from your personal Cringe - has anyone in upper Management made any comments about this? If it's not customer facing and just internal communications - I'd leave it alone. It doesn't hurt anyone and since there is no ulterior motive of malevolence behind the word choice - just leave it be.
@TheDemonLord I'm not in upper management, so I don't know what they talk about. I do know, however, that people in my level (and my manager's level) are often making fun of him behind his back for this. And FWIW, we are an internal tech team, so other teams are our customers.
Is the bigger problem that your boss has some interesting word choices, or that your company has a culture of mocking people behind their back for it? I'd be more worried about the latter myself.

@Acheron - So imagine you tell him "baby talk is unprofessional and everyone is making fun of you". What do you imagine his reaction would be? "Oh really? Unprofessional? I never knew that, thanks!"? Or "What do you mean baby talk?" Or something else?
How do you react when people are "making fun of him"? Maybe that warrants another question.

How is that "not professional"? I can argue it's unexpected, possibly weird, etc... but why do you characterize it as "not professional"?
I would challenge you to prove that these behaviors are "not professional". Is there an international standards organization with a guide that you can cite? Is there an internal company document that makes these references? All this question says to me is that you don't approve of their behaviors, and from the references it sounds like it is not your place to approve or disapprove in this manner.
Very valid point, @Erik, however, have you ever worked anywhere that doesn't happen? It's a sad part of reality that people mock other people.
Well, those word choices feel a bit odd, but I can't help but notice the "Shoot"/"Dang" there. You censored youself aswell and basically cringe at someone censoring a bit further.

If he's the best boss you ever had and that's the worst thing you can think of, he's doing pretty great.

@erik making fun of an adult who is acting like an actual baby is the perfectly normal response, actually.
@freeman because some peoples behavior should only be met with mockery : )

@Chieron What makes you think Acheron censored themselves? Those terms are pretty natural to me (more than the four-letter words heard around some offices), maybe they're natural to Acheron too
@eps Making fun of someone who does this may be the normal response. It is also thoughtless and mean. We should all try to be better than normal.
It's cringe, probably. But way better than excessive foul-mouthed cursing.
