At the end I believe what we are saying about the Beat Generation and Bukowski could be said also about the 19th romanticists, and the surrealists. As a point of fact, some have argued they are all in continuity one another. Maybe the hack of the romanticist and the surrealist was of higher quality than the hack of the Beat Generation, but of higher quality as a hack, not as artistic pieces

Also I don't mean to be categorical. For instance I like the poem "Barbara", by the French surrealist. I think it is touching and delicate. But does it make surrealism a major, deep, sophisticate, and thoughtful artistic movement as it stands to be? I don't think so
