A: Peanut butter Bracha

yydlSee here which quotes Laws of B'rachos that the proper bracha on both chunky and creamy varieties of peanut butter are Hoadama / Borei Nefashos. However, it appears it is actually a machlokes. I see here quote both Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach and Rav Elyashiv that it's Shehakol. I have also seen...

berachot.org/halacha/19_changing.html#peanuts -- According to Rav Bodner, Peanuts do not have their own unique texture and therefore plain smooth peanut butter would be shehakol. However, there are poskim that argue and contend that even smooth Peanut Butter is Ha'adoma.

@Menachem Are you trying to bring a source for a difference between chunky and creamy, or am I misunderstanding you?

yes. You said you have not been able to find a source for the difference, berachot.org's list does say smoothy is shehakol and links to that. -- berachot.org/foods/letter_p.htm

@Menachem I did say I found lists online, but no source. I wouldn't call a website a source unless it listed some sort of backing (Rabbi, Sefer, or the like...)

and he quotes Rav Bodner. In the "About Us" section he says, "I primarily use the fantastic sefer, "V’Zot Haberacha" and additionally Rav Bodner’s Sefer "Halachos of Brochos" for the halacha section." -- link to the sefer: feldheim.com/authors/bodner-rabbi-yisroel-pinchos/…

1:01 AM
@Menachem He doesn't specifically say so. See Revach.net over here that quotes Rav Bodner without making such a distinction...

@yydl: trying out this new "move to chat feature".

@Menachem okay...

@yydl: it looks like the relevant pages are missing in the online version of the book, so I don't know what he says: books.google.com/…

@Menachem Yeah. I unfortunately don't have access to a hard copy (at least right now).

@yydl: me either, but it appears that berachot.org is saying that only smooth is shehakol (if you scroll a little but up the page he is talking about the difference in beracha when something is completely pureed, so maybe that is why he says that R' Bodner only says it by smooth and not crunchy)

1:09 AM
@Menachem Could be. Can't be sure until I get access to a hard copy.

@yydl: as you said, revach.net doesn't make the distinction. Here is another source that quotes R' Bodner: "http://halachipedia.com/index.php?title=Processed_fruits_and_vegetables#cite_re‌f-2" it says: "Peanut butter is Shehakol because it’s because crushed and unrecognizable as a peanut. -- Veten Bracha (Halachos of Brochos by Rabbi Bodner pg 410, chapter 22) in name of Rav Shlomo Zalman"

@Menachem So can we consider it case-closed?

we could use the wording to make a distinction between smooth and crunchy
(however, it may be that halachapedia is run by the same people as berachot.org, see the about us page, berachot.org/AboutUs/aboutus.html where they mention that they want to open up a halachapedia)

@Menachem Doesn't mean much, but the whois is not the same...

maybe just add a note to your post that berachot.org claims a destinction but revach doesn't seem to make that destinction. maybe someone else has the sefer handy and can clarify

1:18 AM
@Menachem As always, you can edit my post if you feel that way. But I think my mention is enough to engage any potential further discussion about such a distinction. I also hope to have access to the Sefer in the next 24-hours, at which point I will be able to give a more definite answer.

@yydl (do I have to put that every time): also the google book I linked to is not the book they're quoting. the one I brought is a quick reference, the one they're quoting is the halachos of berachos, see here: feldheim.com/authors/bodner-rabbi-yisroel-pinchos.html?limit=30

@Menachem The book you linked to is a quick-summary-like-guide taken from the original (they're both by the same author, and follow each other). As a matter of fact, the original book you linked to is included at the end of this book.
@Menachem And you can simply hover over a chat and click on the lower-right icon to reply...

@yydl got it. Here's the book on google: books.google.com/… -- but I can't punch in the page number
@yydl it is supposed to be page 410

@Menachem 410 is not available
:-(

@yydl It's a conspiracy. :)
@yydl page 411 has a tantalizing tail end of a note, "Even though a majority of peanut crop is grown for peanut butter, nevertheless, when eaten plain it's brocha is shehakol" -- books.google.com/…

1:38 AM
@Menachem Wow. didn't notice that

@yydl if you read the rest of the section that's available, it's all about making a distinction between completely pureed and if the original food is still noticeable. so that note could specifically be talking about smooth and not crunchy
