@scottbb yeah, there was actually some fun with that during the beta when mods were figuring out the top bar (they rolled it out to us a few weeks before everyone else) because it made it harder for us to get to help center pages when we needed to give links to new users
so the way it functioned ended up being discussed there. You certainly weren't the first to bring up that concern
but fortunately they had thought of a good solution for new users anyway already
and as for chat discoverability, I'd say meta discoverability is actually probably a larger issue
but hopefully if someone is sticking around a bit, they'll figure out the SE icon fairly quickly
and chat can still be discovered through "let's continue this discussion in chat" links
it's perhaps not super ideal, but not a whole lot we can do about it

@AJHenderson So ironically, the solution was hidden and mostly undiscoverable to the most experienced users. =)

there is a main line thread on Meta.SE about the new bar where the questions can be raised though
@scottbb yeah, fortunately we have pretty easy access to directly talk with CMs and devs though
so it isn't too hard to get answers most of the time

@AJHenderson re: "let's continue this discussion in chat", I've always been bugged a little by that. Often times, I can smell a long comments discussion a mile away, but the automated message takes a long time (several comments) before it pops up. And if you accidentally skip it or message past it, you have to wait for it to come up again.
I've often wished for a way to immediately raise the "let's continue in chat" thing. The automated way is preferable, because the entire comments chain gets copied over, providing context. I'm sure this has probably also been discussed on Meta.SE as well. (I'm too distracted to search at the moment). I'm just kvetching

@scottbb yeah, I was very glad when they made that immediately available to mods, but it should really be available immediately for sufficiently high rep users too
and it's a very nice feature since it gives low rep users permission to use that chat room

Is it only diamond mods, or are 20k trusted users able to do that as well?

3:27 PM
@scottbb but yeah, one of the little known exceptions to the 20 rep rule for chat is that if you give a user write permission in a chat room explicitly, it doesn't matter if they have 20 rep
and the continue discussion in chat thing automatically adds all commenters to the write access for the room
@scottbb I believe it is currently only diamond mods that can do it directly, but let me go check on sec.se
yeah, just diamond mods
because it actually shows up in the mod menu
we get a "mod" option where the other actions like "share", "edit", "delete" etc are
and it opens up all the relevant actions
one of which is to either purge all comments or convert it to chat and we can either convert to chat with or without nuking the comments
I use it regularly when a great discussion starts on a question or answer that really doesn't add to the question at hand, but I can convert it to a chat and alter the comment left about the conversation to let people know what it is about if they are interested

Interesting. I knew there were comment cleanup tools for mods. I really like the sound of "convert to chat", glad that's available to the mods.

yeah, it wasn't intitially, but we strongly asked for it
and they coded it up for us to be able to access it
totally random unrelated thought. I've always wondered why it is some posts randomly attract a ton of "thanks" answers while others don't

Q: Why is my Yongnuo YN-568EXII's zoom stuck at 14mm?

sibaji rakshitI am using a flash, the Yongnuo YN-568EXII for Canon, and am facing a zoom issue. It's stuck at 14mm and the M sign is blinking near the zoom button. I am not able to change the zoom. If anyone has any solution please share.

has had like 4 or 5 "thank you" answers

@AJHenderson You might not hear it much, but I appreciate your comment cleanup efforts. I'm a firm believer of incorporating comment details into Q/As when it helps, and eliminating the crufty comments soon.
Of course, believing in one thing, vs. always acting accordingly, are 2 separate things. I'm certainly guilty of piling on comments from time to time, without going back and sweeping info back into the answer... =\

@scottbb some of that effort has been from one or more people doing a lot of flagging too. I don't personally have the time to do much legacy cleanup, but if people flag stuff for my or mike's attention, it makes it quick and easy to deal with
@scottbb yeah, I think that goes for all of us

@AJHenderson Weird. That question is like a magnet attractor for thank yous

3:37 PM
especially when your flushing out some additional details
@scottbb yeah, it's very odd because you see that a lot with different questions and there is no discernable pattern
I've seen it across multiple sites and multiple topics
you can usually find them if you look for protected questions since it is one of the most common reasons to use the protect feature
the other big one being the HQL
(hot question list)

I had a theory that at least some of the new user 1 rep "thank you" posts are a result of scraping / republishing SEO "Q&A" sites that pop up.

@scottbb could be
have you ever seen this before scott?
it's another one of the random things about SE that a lot of people don't know about
but you can literally select out the majority of content of the sites if you wanted to. I'm not sure if they still post them, but they used to have data dumps of all the public info as well

4:00 PM
@AJHenderson yeah. Every once in awhile (usually during a holiday when I'm bored and avoiding knocking out honeydew lists), I play with the queries, and toy with creating my own. It's kinda a game (in a nerdy way) to create a "legitimate" query where you pop out at the top of the ranking. "Hey, I'm the #1 user for rep:post ratio for people with 13k < rep < 14k. I'm special" :D

Q: Several 404s when visiting the website

Tolga OzsesWhen I was visiting the photo.SE yesterday, I noticed the following: In case these links go broken again, these SE files for banners etc. should not be kept on imgur IMO. Update: I can't seem to upload a screenshot but this might be a Safari thing. I'll try downloading Chrome and redoing it.
