So the kodak printing guy asked a client who was printing some of my photos if they were professional, and he said he loved them

@AJHenderson That one is a straight out of camera JPEG.
.. at least, that's what I would bet on ;)
@MichaelClark Yeah, I know there is DoF preview in all but the cheapest Canon models. Thanks for confirming that it works also in Liveview display.
Every Sony SLT model has DoF preview too, even the most beginner level cheap models. Unfortunately there is only two reconfigurable buttons on my Sony A37, so I have let go of DoF preview and using "focus magnifying" on one button and "AEL toggle" on another button. When I want to use DoF preview (practically never) I need to go thru menu to switch a button configuration.
@AJHenderson The frosty rose is blueish, because it is shot early in the morning - in below freezing point temperature... There simply is no red wavelengths in the light :D
bytheway, the rose is a pink rose, not red.

@PatoSáinz nice
yeah, that is the downside to getting good at photography, printing places start getting a lot more picky about printing your stuff
I've had times where despite releasing rights to my clients to let them print the images, they still have to come back and have me sign paperwork to get their images printed
I get that it is there to protect my rights and all, but it can be a bit annoying too

How does the Photo Contest work ?
I understand the best shot is moved to the Hall of Fame, but what about all the others ?
I've seen a tag on a wall yesterday and took a quick shot of it. This shot is not good but as I was thinking about it, I was wondering if you could use art like that through contest, even if you don't make money out of it... Could it be illegal at some point to share this kind of picture on 500px.com ?
@AJHenderson I would have never thought this could happen... It's funny... Now I feel upset I've been able to print some of my shots without troubles :-P
Shot from my balcony... I've been having that kind of view nearly once a week for the past 2 months... That's quite cool :)

@AndyM they sit there until they make it
there has been some discussion about refining that
@AndyM well, it isn't strictly speaking illegal, just someone else may be able to exercise copyright over the image
or over the content of the image rather
most likely, the worst you would get is a take down notice and then you'd take it down
especially if you aren't doing any commercial use
@AndyM well, another part of it is that I also embed meta-data in my images, so if they look at that, they will see two things, first, that it is shot on a professional camera with professional lenses. Second, that it does actually have a copyright notification in the meta-data.
so there are three possible reasons
technically, I do preserve copyright of my works even though I license them out nearly unrestricted. (I preserve the right to require my name be stripped from any derivative work.)

yo
hi there
@AJHenderson Meta Data could be easily changed... Do you watermark your pictures as well ?
Entering the competition with that picture :

Hope to get a few vote :)

This one have been a hell to lit properly... The white would be burned or the brown background would get to dark....
Is it a limitation of my camera (high dynamic range) or is it a limitation of my brain ? :)
@AndyM Aye, I can imagine :)
The white is the troublemaker, I've had the same when shooting photos of our white cats.
@EsaPaulasto Ah really, many times I had just 0 details in the white part...
Well, at least you did well after all :)
I tried switching my flash position, changing the strength of the flash
blah... I don't know... it's the best I could come with... but I wanted it to be lit from the bottom
like from the ground
and simulate projectors on the ground
cool idea, I like it :)
17:14
It would give a dramatic feel but absolutely no idea how I could find a tiny spot :)
It would then need some dramatic shadows cast in behind the bear
except making a hole in a paper or something, and hiding my flash
@Shyju hey
quick question
@AndyM I do not watermark my images. I don't care if they change the meta data
17:15
<afk
playing with my flash, i succeeded in doing that amazing shot (totally by luck)......
in aperature priority mode, Can i take a picture in a dark room/ night outside without a tripod ?
my brand is built around quality, flexibility and freedom
whenever i take the picture, It takes a lot of time for the shuttrt to close
Shot on my desk, in the plain day :) I was astonished to be able to do that in the bright day, with nothing but a flash and a piece of paper :D
17:19
@AndyM unsure without seeing original conditions, but I wouldn't personally expect too much trouble with an image like that
@Shyju Depends on the result you want... Depends on the lens and the amount of light you're going to receive... But you're probably will get blur from your movement
but I get lots of detail in my shadows and can fix a lot with curves
@Shyju Because, if you're in a dark condition and setup with aperture mode, your camera will change the time to get a correct exposure. If you're receive a small amount of light, you'll have to wait for your sensor to be filled with the proper amount of light... That explains why your shutter takes time to close...
@Shyju You could go in full manual mode and change the speed of your shutter, but you'll end with nothing but a black picture :)
@Shyju Here is some theory about the poor explanation I gave you :) Hope this will help you like it did with me : digital-photography-school.com/…
@AndyM the trick is to put a small LED in frame with the real light just out of frame
@Shyju sure, you can take a picture in a dark room without a tripod, but if you don't want it to be a blurry mess, you need a tripod or some other form of stabilization
well, blurry or noisy
@AJHenderson Cool idea.... I'm poor at building things tho :) especially electricity... It's a recipe for disaster :D
I might give it a go nonetheless... Just to try :)
17:27
but aperture priority won't let you go any faster than the lens otherwise allows and if you are in a dark environment, the camera will already be shooting at the fastest possible aperture
so switching to Av mode won't help any
you would more use Av mode if you were shooting in a dark environment and needed a wider depth of field, that way you could force the camera to use a slower shutter, even though it is kicking and screaming for a wider aperture
@AJHenderson You mean bigger DOF ?
@AndyM yes, thanks
this is what I get for trying to eat and think and type at the same time
@AJHenderson no problemo, just wanted to make sure I understand well :)
Bon appétit !
turkey bacon swiss... yum
I don't know what is it... Is it supposed to be from my country ? :)
17:32
hmm, why is there not a country called bacon
is swiss cheese even originally swiss?
@AJHenderson I would definitely live there :)
@AJHenderson Ahah, no idea...
"Swiss cheese is a generic name in North America for several related varieties of cheese"
figures the name is of US origin. We make up so many things and then label them inappropriately
I guess it is based on a cheese that actually is swiss in origin though
so it isn't quite as bad as chinesse fortune cookies
or french fries
yeah it looks like Emmental
@AJHenderson Isn't the chinese fortune cookie from china ?
17:39
@AndyM no, it is a purely american invention
I've always thought it was... It looks so chinese :)
you can't even find them in China generally
ahah that is amazing
A fortune cookie is a crisp cookie usually made from flour, sugar, vanilla, and sesame seed oil with a "fortune" wrapped inside. A "fortune" is a piece of paper with words of wisdom, an aphorism, or a vague prophecy. The message inside may also include a Chinese phrase with translation or a list of lucky numbers used by some as lottery numbers, some of which have become actual winning numbers. Fortune cookies are often served as a dessert in Chinese restaurants in the United States and some other countries, but are absent in China. The exact origin of fortune cookies is unclear, though...
You see them everywhere in movies... Often related to china environment and background... that is crazy
I've learnt something today :)
afk for some time ! Nice end of meal !
17:44
but yeah, back on the whole watermark thing, I license my images to my clients with an unlimited license, they can do literally anything they want with the images. I don't care. I maintain ownership to protect my interest as the creator and originator of the work, but I view any possible low quality end result from what they do with them as derivative works and I'm a big proponent of derivative works.
it's my photo, but their memory. In my view, they have as much right to shape it as I do
it's just a philosophical thing
but that's also why I maintain the explicit right to remove mention of myself from a derivative work
and actually, I don't even require credit when they reuse one of my images, though I do request it
my primary concern is my site and social media presence and my direct word of mouth. Quality matters most for the online components as someone talking via word of mouth is going to here the experience of working with me and the satisfaction and can be directed to my site where they will see works presented in high quality
I'm strongly opposed to watermarks as mars on my work though
I put my branding next to the images generally (though my main site does display with branding and menu overlayed on full screen images)
I really, really, really don't like watermarks in general principal
there are some situations they make sense, but not many imo
for stock photography for example, they are pretty critical unfortunately
