well that was a fast upvote
I had a +1 upvote on my post before the screen had even refreshed after I hit submit
okay, I can remove that if you want ;)
I had just upvoted the other answer when it showed me that a new answer was available. I clicked on it and I am a somewhat fast reader
nice
thanks, yeah, I just thought it was very interesting timing
ohh, down to under 70 rep to go before mod tools :)
What do you guys think of the strong orange glow around the bonfire?
Is it some form or lens flare or has it another name?
I'd guess it is called smoke
on the water
Could not get it down without making the boats disappear too.

and fire in the sky
that's a song? :)
:)
sounds familiar but I can't recall it now
anyway, I don't much like it, but can't get it away either
I think these might be particles (smoke) being illuminated by the fire
maybe it is a lens artifact
I think it is fine
yeah, it might be an artifact, but it's probably just collecting light that is being reflected or refracted by particulate in the air
it looks ine
fine even
I actually like the way it looks
19:04
When I took the shot (about 15 of them) I noticed it already in viewfinder and the more off-center I placed the fire the more strong it got.
it kind of builds around the fire
so I guess it is coming from the lens, not from the fire itself
hmm, only suggestion then is to throw the lens away ;)
okay, then another thing about this photo... do you notice anything odd on the left side of the larger sailboat?
vertically thru the whole image
sorry sorry, RIGHT side of the boat!!
I'll take more of a look later, but have to run atm
19:07
@AJHenderson I'll reveal what it is soon ;)
no, I don't see anything
vertical thing going across the image right next to the larger sailboat
a bit of reflections missing
well.. I cut something like 250-300 pixels worth away from there
@Unapiedra aha, you got it :)
really?
it looks natural because there are no lights
19:09
there was nothing there, and it only worked to take the boat far away from the bonfire
so I just cut off a stripe of 300 pixels wide
The edges then showed some minor tone difference, leaving a straight easily distinguishable line there
used clone brush to clean it away, since I don't have these fancy content aware brushes
manual work, that is ;)
well, looks perfectly fine to me
thanks :)
I would not have even come to think about it, but some time ago I had seen a question/answer in PhotoSE that talked about this kind of job
in the sample pic there was a man - lots of grass - lighthouse.
and they cut a big chunk of the empty space away from between the man and the lighthouse

A: What do you call the technique for removing uninteresting parts of photo by combining two images?

Chinmay KanchiWhat you are thinking of is seam carving. The example you are thinking of comes from the Wikipedia article of the same name. Photoshop implements this and calls it "Content-aware scaling" and the GIMP calls it "Liquid Rescale".

oh, I could have used "liquid rescale" :P
I just remembered the idea of doing a thing like this, but I did not bother to search for the exact Question in PhotoSE to check for the tools to do it. And so I did it manually.
And, bytheway, it was not a lighthouse but a sort of castle in that photo :)
interesting
in comparison I find the 'shopped version to be a bit cramped with boats
but don't listen to me, I wouldn't have figured this out on my own
and I recheck the cut, it was over 400 pixels wide slice
you also see lens flare that got cut away too
green flare on the water
yes, that I can see

anyone made aioli/mayonnaise at home?
it keeps being too runny. Im following all teh tips
perhaps too warm? I've noticed how temperature affects the strangest things that you did not expect to get affected. But I have not done mayo at home.
off to bed now, early wake-up tomorrow (4:50 a.m.)
watch the video from Blumenthal about mayo
haven't done so myself and am not interested but he has many tipps and what to look out for
I think that might be the one
20:05
its actually getting stiffer by the minute resting
using a handblender seemed to work :)
