6:52 AM
Morning

7:51 AM
Night

8 hours later…
3:25 PM
hoi

hey, ok so first thing, opening dev tools

@Gwideon meets boy

I dunno how familiar you are with this

not super familiar

which browser are you using btw?

3:28 PM
chrome

ok so while on the tab with the ship page thing, pressing f12 should bring up the devtools

it's not working

Might be out of focus.

hm... how about ctrl-shift-i

nope
dev tools may be blocked due to school stuff

3:31 PM
Ah, that makes sense.

hm, what about options, more tools, developer tools?
oh
well if devtools is indeed blocked, I have no idea how to do it

yeah it's blocked

I mean you could download the entire page as run it on your computer
but that seems a bit overkill

?

yeah I'm doing that

3:34 PM
hm ok let me check something then
ah it's not that bad actually if you want to run it

oh god the formatting is off

just right click, save page as...
then you just edit the file with a text editor

well this is sad. i can acess dev tool on microsoft edge

comment line 634 by adding // like so: "//modelParent.rotation.z += difAutoY;"
and it should not rotate the next time you open

okat

3:40 PM
did it work?
oh this doesn't work for specific names since it goes back to the online version

yeah
also no. can't edit

hm what program are you using to try to edit?

anyways I'm just gonna take load the 3d models into maya and take screen shots from there

alright

GcL
4:26 PM
@Gwideon That is disappointing.
Looks like there's nothing server side there. You could download the index page, and each of the scripts yourself to copy the project. Then you just have to substitute localhost everyplace ship.shapewright.com appears.

5:24 PM
crusier
Gunship
um what do people think so far
@vicky_molokh
sorry
Tugship
hauler
Fighters

@Gwideon What are the feet for?

on what

The... tugship, I think? The reply arrow links back to a specific message.

on the tug ship it's actually a set of clamps so that it can clamp onto another ship and tug it out

Despite their name, I thought tugships mostly worked by pushing not pulling.

5:39 PM

Probably wrong though, I don't know much about ships.

depends
that's it
sorry for the image spam

So which ones are different models and which ones are the same model but with a different viewing angle and/or configuration (X-wing in "attack" mode)?

I like the gunship/tugship (second trio) the most. Would be willing fly on it in SWTOR's space missions! Also reminds me of the D5 Mantis a bit. Overall, I think wireframes would make it easier to figure out the shapes on the screenshots.
The one after Depends is cool too. The final one looks over the top even for SW.

true
@Yuuki the pictures are grouped into trios. each trio is a different model

5:46 PM
The final one actually looks something out of The Matrix with those feet that could be electromagnetic levitation pads.

my personal favorite is either the hauler or the cruiser

I'm weird because I like boxy ships, a la Halo's UNSC ships.

GcL
@Yuuki square cube law. modest increase in surface area and you get a lot more volume.

nah not really. alot of people like those ship designs

GcL
plus, screw aerodynamics. Only need to minimize cross sections for impact.

5:49 PM
Boxy ships are IIRC considered rather common.

Although Covenant supercruisers are badass in their own way.

@GcL On a serious note: Need to minimise surface area to minimise armour/structure mass and cost and/or maximise affordable thickness (depending on role).

GcL
@vicky_molokh The role depends on the punches... if you're into idioms.

anyways scifi ship design is interesting

It is.

6:02 PM
the bee
it's a cool ship

Oh, also may want to check out Atomic Rockets, another resource useful to designing (more hard-sci) spaceships. To be taken with a grain of salt because it sometimes can get overzealous, and will ruin Starwarsy ships for you if you take it too close to your heart. ^_^
@Gwideon Makes me think that's the heavier, bomber-oriented-ier sister of Babylon 5's Starfury starfighter.

okay
@vicky_molokh yeah it does seem to be a bomber type thing

@Gwideon Or whatever a Y-Wing is supposed to be - it doesn't feel like calling it a bomber is quite accurate. Attack spacecraft?

This ship looks like classic German over-engineering.

6:11 PM
@vicky_molokh fighter bomber

@vicky_molokh good lord that '90s site design

Right! Fighter-bomber. Or maybe a stormfighter.
@Yuuki '60s. It's atomic!

hahahaha
this one is kinda interesting.

I like it. Modular maybe.

maybe

6:15 PM
With swappable pods, like the Vindicator in Star Control 2 and Origins.

Honestly not what I was expecting from the name.
But then again, I don't know what I was expecting with that name.

i think you confused it

I must admit, the two first concerns I have about all those ships are:
- How does it land when it needs to? Because adventurers *will* need to land!
- How are/can be the inner rooms positioned and what fits inside? Because that's where a lot of stuff will be happening.

true

6:20 PM
@Yuuki I like it. tiny cargo ship

As you can tell, I'm the type of person who would name my ship the "UNSC Rheumatoid Arthritis".

i'm just using numbers at this point for my seeds

The real ship is the spaceship you made along the way

this reminds me of something
and this appears to be the devils ship

which part's the front?

6:31 PM
no idea

It's in space, so there is no front, just as there is no up or down

@MikeQ yeah but what about when the front falls off?

6:44 PM
@MikeQ Front is whatever direction the ship is best equipped to accelerate towards, which is also where the up is during said acceleration.

2 hours later…
8:33 PM
interesting ship design

@Gwideon Looks about right for some sort of cruiser or bigger. Or hauler maybe. Seems even closer to the 'ISO Standard' style of ships than the generator makes on average.
I like it.

I like that one too.

8:53 PM
Not sure what to make of those weird dual wing/flange things.

@Yuuki Makes me think of Blacktron.

it looks cool
