@nitsua60 Fair enough!
00:11
@Shalvenay hiya. you around?
@nitsua60 yeah
@Shalvenay so are you interested in doing some longer-form one-on-one series?
@nitsua60 yeah, definitely
anything you've been itching to try out? (system, setting, theme, ...?)
@nitsua60 there are a few things actually
00:17
shoot
(as in "fire away", not "darn")
one of them is the "Jherala Attends The Royal Ball" theme -- just from curiosity alone
another (albeit perhaps not fully practical thing) would be a Traveller game
why would traveller be impractical?
there are some things about space combat--especially two-party--that seem to make it easier in some ways. (much less "terrain," one-dimensional representation works well)
@nitsua60 I think sourcebooks would be the greatest problem
I've got a work-buddy with an encyclopedic knowledge of the system--I could get some recsfrom him on classic vs. mongoose vs. new era vs. whatever else's been released
(1) Jherala at the ball, (2) traveller; anything else on your mind?
a third thing is that I have an issue -- I don't grasp urban intrigue RP well at all
and I was wondering if there'd be something in a one-on-one we could do to help me understand/appreciate it better
00:29
me either--never really tried my hand at it.
would be a good learning exercise for both of us, then
I think the key conceit has to be anyone unaligned with an existing faction is (a) at serious risk and (b) assumed to be a threat by all factions.
@nitsua60 yeah -- I think there's also the conceit that the characters are assumed not to be paying close attention to their surroundings at all times
...'cause it'd just be too much to describe/worldbuild, I suppose
@nitsua60 actually, it has to do with character capability vs. approaches. characters in urban-intrigue are not designed to hard counter stealth
(in other words, paranoiacs aren't played, because they are too disruptive to that style, or am I missing something here?)
00:36
moving on to timing for a second: I'm pretty-much flat-out these next few weeks. (Exams, starting to run a new RL group on Monday, robotics season finishing up.) So I'd want to start late March at the earliest, possibly better into April.
@nitsua60 yeah, that's OK.
would every-other week be okay? I run a weekly RL and a fortnightly RL, so it'd be nice to just slot into the fortnightly interstices.
@nitsua60 I probably can work with that with a suitable reminder :)
I've got an idea for a solo heroic arc I've been thought-shopping for the last half-year. System/setting independent; it's more about world structure than any elements. Interested?
@nitsua60 throw the idea at me
00:45
umm.... it's sort of a 'see it as it unfolds' sort of thing. (sorry, probably shouldn't have said anything in the first place.)
@nitsua60 ah.
01:03
@Shalvenay so I'd suggest we try Traveller or something either 2e or 5e? (I'm steeped these days in 5e so that'd be easy, but I'm comfortable with 2e if you prefer it. 1e or ODD would work, but I'd have to bone up a bit.)
@nitsua60 I think we can give a short Traveller arc a shot -- something simple to get the feel for the system, you know?
Sounds good. On Monday I'll ask my source about recommendations for edition/version.
alright -- did you get what I said re: conceits for urban-intrigue RP?
not totally sure I followed it. are you saying that it should be easy to be stealthy in urban settings, or that it should be hard?
@nitsua60 neither -- I'm saying that characters should be vulnerable to stealth at least some of the time
01:16
oh, sure.
or basically, one of the conceits is that "confrontation is highly risky and should be avoided"
afk awhile (kids' bedtime)
